We arrived at midnight and the guy managing the desk was not happy to see us. He was very rude and very lazy.
THE GOOD: During the pandemic the cost is reduced to 600 pesos for two people, with "breakfast" included (more on that below).
The hotel is is in a good location. There are lots of places to eat just around the first corner, including many very low cost traditional food places so don't waste your time with the hotel's restaurant.
The internet was good in our room. You get a code tat is valid for 4 days. I use linux and waterfox and the captive portal login always causes problems but after some fiddling I was able to connect and the signal strength was good.
There were no bad smells in the room or bathroom.
The shower's water pressure was excellent and the hot water worked fine.
THE BAD: For an old building the rooms are tiny. There is no room for a desk to work at. No coffee table. Just a small chair.
While you can argue that it is a colonial building with character you can just as equally say the building is very tired, looks dirty, and is in desperate need of renovation.
The locks on the doors are the kind that are easily picked.
Within 10 mins of settling in we saw a cockroach running across the floor.
There was only a single powerpoint for the room. So if you want to stay here you'll need to bring a multiboard so you can connect laptops and phone chargers.
Only one water bottle there, not the usual two that you'd expect. The lazy desk clerk was too lazy to think to give us a second. We arrived during local elections so every shop was closed that night so there was nowhere to buy more water.
The towels and bedsheets were old and in poor condition. No extra pillows.
The final thing that really annoyed us about this place was the breakfast that was included. Our booking was originally just for one person but they added on 100 pesos for a second. That was to cover the cost of the breakfast which was included. This is not a self-serve breakfast. You get a choice or eggs or chilaquiles, a cup of café olla, and a glass of orange juice (from a sachet not a real orange). We asked if we could change the eggs for hot cakes (30 pesos) but were told absolutely not. The breakfast was pathetic. If you stay here try and have the cost of breakfast discounted off the cost of the room. Around the very first corner outside the main foyer door you can find three traditional food places and get a full breakfast for 55 pesos.
THE TEST The real test of whether we liked a place is whether we would stay again. In short, NO. We were booked in for 4 days but we checked out as soon as we had had our pathetic breakfast. Lots of other people seemed to be checking out too so I think that says it all.
We checked into La Siesta del Fauno. It's an easy 15 minute walk on flat roads. It's brand new, the same cost (without breakfast), and has great service. It's a little further away and the internet was a bit problematic the first night, but infinitely better than...
Read moreI paid 550 pesos to stay one night. When I arrived in the evening, there were many bars playing loud music. This didn't bother me, though it might bother some. The music died down at a reasonable hour, so no problem.
The receptionist was very nice and helpful. He did a good job.
The room appeared fine at first glance. There was no air conditioning, but the window opened and there was a fan - not a ceiling fan, a small standing fan. There really was no good place to plug the fan it and place it at a reasonable height. But, it wasn't too hot at night, so it was fine. There was a cigarette burn mark on the bed.
My main problem with the room was the water. There was no hot water at all, neither in the evening or in the morning. And, the shower's open design made the bathroom floor all wet, creating a slip and fall hazard. No bath mat was provided. And the sink faucet was so small as to be practically useless. It was positioned very close to the edge of the sink, and there wasn't enough space to make both of you hands wet at the same time.
Finally, the wifi did not reach the 3rd floor. I had to go sit on the 1st floor to use the wifi.
However, it is near the plaza, a number of other parks, and some other fun things to...
A buen precio.
