Wonderful location but the wonderful ends there. At first glance the courtyard appears clean and the pool looks tempting, however cigarette butts were left everywhere and tables were not cleaned. Garbages in common areas weren't emptied. Ever. Hallways and stairs weren't swept ever, let alone mopped. ||||Now to the room. After dragging our suitcases and backpacks up three flights of stairs (no elevator), the door jam was so old it didn't want to open or close the door. ||||The bed. OMG. The "mattress" was basically a slab of concrete. Not exaggerating. I seriously considered sleeping on the beach after the first night "sleeping" on that thing. Plus, it was dirty, the sheet was so thin I could literally see through it and it didn't even cover the whole bed. The "blanket"...same thing. Gross thin fleece material with hair and lint stuck all over it. It didn't fit the bed either. My husband and I had to take turns using it. Not joking. Apparently there were no extras available. ||||Our room was not cleaned once in four days. When I went to the front desk to ask for more toilet paper and two clean towels the older gentlemen asked, "What's your problem?" I kindly made my request, he asked for my room number and in very broken English told me they would bring it all up. An hour later I sent my husband down with the actual empty roll of toilet paper, and our towels. The gentleman apologized to him and very difficulty explained that he didn't understand a word I said an hour earlier. So, apparently, instead of the dozen other options, that seem like common sense to me, to resolve the issue, he went back to sitting around in the courtyard (which all the employees did while we were there) and didn't care. Back to the towels...the "clean" ones we received were frayed on the ends, a dull shade of what I think was once white, and very scratchy. ||||The room overall wasn't very clean. The mirrors were spotted with soap scum and very streaky. The toilet flushed very, very slowly (and sometimes not at all) and the shower drain backed up to the point where I might have just as well taken a bath (okay, exaggerating a little there. A little). ||||Three of the seven light bulbs in the room didn't work and a fourth flickered so badly we could have hosted a disco party! Also, the tv didn't work. Not a big deal for us, but that didn't help the already less than ideal situation. ||||Tried to order lunch at the "restaurant" but couldn't find anyone to take our order. Luckily there are plenty of restaurants and food carts within steps that were willing to take our money and serve us. ||||The bottom line: have we stayed in worse conditions? Yes (that time we accidentally stayed in a hostel...long story!). However, I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone unless they are looking for something cheap and do not plan to be in the room at all. Even for sleeping...don't be in the room! ||||What I would recommend is that staff try harder (or just try). Try lying on the bed (let alone "sleeping" on it). Try begging for TP...twice. Try not annoying your neighbor when you have to slam the room door shut. Try getting help at the front desk and then being greeted with, "What's your problem?" Try being a guest at your own hotel and perhaps you'll have a better appreciation for those guests who do support your business (until they don't...
Read moreThis hotel will be loved or hated depending on your expectations. ||Overall, in the US I would consider this a high quality 2 star hotel. ||If you are looking for a Hilton or even Courtyard experience, you will be disappointed. ||Pros: in our room (207) the AC worked great. The room was perfectly clean and a few of the bath fixtures show recent upgrades. The beds were fine (no box spring) and the staff were polite. Location very close to the beach. The price was very affordable. I think I paid US$50 a night with one day notice in the middle of June. There is a small pool at the front. ||Cons: the furnishings are very basic. 2 beds, small bedside table, desk with bench for sitting. No where to relax or even sit except the bed. Only 2 towels and no other bath linen. Bathroom is small. The staff I encounter spoke almost no English, but did not get upset at my bad Spanish. No elevator. The hotel has 4 stories. And no one to carry bags for you. ||There are many room types, some suites with dining table and chairs and a fridge, etc. so, if do not not want the sparse room I had and you can speak Spanish, I am sure they can accommodate for a higher rate. ||Perhaps the most serious issue I had was that there was no way to lock the room door from the inside. The door locks automatically as you enter, so a key is needed, but there is no deadbolt or other way to secure the door from the inside. Now, I note that nearby Merida was just named the safest city in all of North America, including Canada and the US, so maybe this is less of an issue||So, if I was driving down I95 and pulled over to a no-name motel, I would find this place to be great. It was clean and is being pretty well maintained, overall. And it is 1 block from an ocean beach that is not too crowded. If you have that expectation in mind, it is just fine and probably as good as the many air bnb nearby for the price. ||But, if you are looking for a Hampton inn or courtyard designed for American tastes, you will likely be...
Read moreI am giving this hotel 5 stars for what it offers compared to what else was available in the area that shows up on the internet, which is not much. We paid $50 a night for a Jr. Suite that had a nice view of the ocean. The hotel was very accommodating in extending our stay and not having to change rooms when we had to extend our stay when no rooms were available in other areas we wanted to visit. The room is not fancy and could really use a fan in the living/kitchen area as there is no air conditioning. There is air conditioning in the bedroom that worked well. The staff are very helpful and Venus at the front desk really helped us figure things out. It is located in a great area of town one block off the beach, there is a 24hr convenient store across the street and a lovely restaurant called Fish Fish on the next block. Progreso is not nearly as developed as other tourist areas in Mexico but that is what we were looking for.||There is a very nice common area with a small pool that is very relaxing.||This hotel was a great home base for us to check...
