We three middle aged British guys had been to Tulum and Bacalar and had heard from friends and fellow travellers that Majahual was the place to be for a quieter experience by the Caribbean. Bkg.c listings were mostly phone ahead. An ex pat Canadian resident in Bacalar recommended we stay at LCDD as it was at the quieter end of town furthest away from the Cruise ships and was more local as a result. He said the huts were cheap and were on the beach almost. We took a chance by not booking ahead. We arrived on the Sunday late afternoon and made our way along the busy (a liner was at the port) commercial touristy strip (much less so then Playa though!) in the heat of the day with our 5kg backpacks. After stalling (it was hot!) we persevered and the malecon and tourism petered out becoming much calmer Scene with semi derelict and half built buildings with vacant plots between. The odd finished hotel and restaurant. In the distance the LCDD was visible, we got closer and arrived to find the complex of huts and concrete buildings at the rear. All looked good. A sign on reception said 'No Vacancies' so we were disappointed as no backup plan (we did not enquired whilst walking as too hot and bothered).||Despite the sign my friend enquired in his best Spanish to the big guy in reception. Yes there WAS a hut. Number 1 in fact on the road, closest to the beach - Great! He showed it to us! All looked good - Super!! The price 800 a night for the three of us - Perfect! We were so relieved! We sorted the paperwork paying in advance by card, thankfully not having to part with cash as we had not seen any ATMs anywhere. We asked the receptionist's name and it was Abraham Jacob and he was an Architect. ||Other families were around, one occupying an elevated hut with a view. There was a covered restaurant area where people were eating and drinking soft drinks. There was no menu so maybe it was just a picnicking/bring your own kitchen and dining room. I did not enquired as we were expecting to eat out anyway.||The local stretch of beach is not cleared as much as the touristy town. The hotel is ultimately a short walk away but street lamps were not on or working on the road (engineers seen working on them as we left) but the main zona pietonal malecon was lit up until the road joined it from the back street.||On the first morning I discovered the (immediate) neighbouring arty shop/cafe/yoga establishment Pa La Pa which offered real Veracruz coffee for 25. The charming, genuine and friendly young woman served me and cycled to a shop to buy the milk as the little one had drunk it all. Her name turned out to be Liz from Italy and we chatted about environmental protection, cruise boats and wildlife locally. Things are changing. I was hungry so ordered a fruit plate for 50 which was tasty cubed melon and pineapple with orange segments. The next morning we were leaving so I only had a coffee from Liz and Brenda. My friend liked both days' coffee. A decaffinated or half decaf version would have been even better though. ||I had to move the makeshift thick rope sleeping policeman/speed restrictor in the road adjacent to the hut along to the neighbouring vacant plot so as not to be disturbed by cars or bikes constantly decelerating, rumbling and accelerating over at all times (although it was a relatively quiet road and not a problem) I also arranged a gap for cycles and bikes each side. No-one complained!||There were only a few electric points, one by sink, another by door so we had to charge devices with alarms far from bed. There was also one point outside under thatched umbrella was very useful.||Two double beds (which proved firm and comfortable) for 800 each night (Sunday & Monday) for the three of us, no problem. Clean ironed cotton sheets. Only two big towels were supplied but we usually manage with two for three of us for two days to reduce environmental damage. A table, chair and surface were near the sink and a bedside table between beds. I brought a upvc chair from outside to place in the corner for one bed for my friend to store stuff.||Central light and fan (setting 5 is slowest as usual!) was useful, especially the second night to keep the ants at bay.||Shower had hot water in good time but no cold tap, no problem, plus a foot washing tap. The only bin on the hut was by the loo. A sign asking for all paper to go into bin (a plastic bag was provided). Clothes could be washed in the bin (was cracked so leaked slowly) and hung on hangers on the line by the hammocks. I washed some clothes and needed some coat hangers to dry them outside. The male cleaner was quite happy to stop his sweeping and find me four hangers. On our second morning water cut out but came on again no problem quite quickly. ||Sink with mirror over it and LED lamp above good for shaving and water pressure was good for flushing out shaver. ||In a beach hut environment it would be useful to have a small broom in each room as sand and fluff get into the bed easily and are annoying on the floor in general.||The first night we slept relatively well, although I used earplugs just in case as one of the guests had a noisy throaty Harley D type motorbike which was a bit annoying as he came and went.||The second evening we noticed a few mosquitoes and dozens of flying ants inside the shower. It was just after a full moon so they were out in force and luckily we had a spray although a resident gecko above the shower was happy. I hope it was not affected by the spray which dealt with quite a few ants whilst we ate at Nohoch that evening. On returning the numbers had reduced but overnight some still left annoyed my friend and I felt the odd one crawling around. It is a hut after all. Full moon is the time for their emerging. No big deal! ||Overall this is a great place to stay, especially in the hut #1! We did not see much of Abraham and the place felt safe. It was kept fairly litter free (stuff blows in off the road) and next door's coffee was useful too in the morning sitting under the thatch using the wifi which was good...
Read moreWell, the Cabanas are a little bit off to the south of the town center (if such a thing exists in a place which is basically one long||||promenade along the shore). The huts are quite spacious and the garden they sit in is well-maintained. Every hut comes with a few chairs||||and a table outside to sit and relax. Reception staff is friendly and the ocean front is only a few meters away across||||the small main road. Prices for the Cabanas are OK but don't expect a lot of comfort. There are no mosquito nets for the beds available.||||They rather try to keep the little buggers out by protecting windows and other vents with nets which doesn't always work too well, so expect to get some visitors at night.||||As for the downside, the toilet and showering section inside the hut is very basic and not really detached from the rest of the room. The "bathroom compartment" consists of walls only but without a roof so if you shower then your room mate(s) will hear every drop of water. Same when you're on the toilet, so be prepared! A little side note regarding the seaweed: although the hotel and restaurant owners in Mahahual are not responsible for the seaweed plague it IS annoying to have the smell everywhere around especially when you're lying in the Cabanas so close to the seaweed-covered beach. And the usually white sandy beach is practically in an unusable state. And I guess this is partly why during our visit in May most restaurant, shops, dive shops and hotels had been closed down. It was a quite quiet mexican experience - but if you like being on your own and are not really keen to ly on the beach or go into the water then Mahahual might just be what you're...
