Fantastic hotel. Probably one of the more expensive hotels in Yangon (Rangoon), but my wife and I loved it.
Reasonable balance between gardens/pool and rooms, so it feels spacious and quiet. Off the main road so limited noise from the surrounding area. Top quality service and very attentive staff.
Rooms are spacious with a desk, and sofa and few chairs, plus huge king-size bed.
Food: afternoon tea (has to be booked a day in advance) is very delicate, well baked patisserie with tiny sandwiches and savoury snacks. Far too much food, but it meant we skipped dinner that night.
Dinner: Burmese buffet upstairs (except today when they went Mexican - possibly every Thursday); downstairs - a la carte, mainly Western food.
Breakfast: fairly typical mix of Western and local buffet, lots of fruit, egg station where they'll cook you an omelette, eggs fried or scrambled.
Generally - you get a LOT of food. Don't have three meals a day.
If you come back they bang their gong at the entrance hall to welcome you back. All guests are sat down, offered a chilled towel and a cold drink while they sort out check in (about 2 minutes on our second visit.)
Didn't try their spa, but did have a free 5-min "taster" of the massage. We loved the pool area, usually a light breeze and cool pool. Lots of towels, beds, hats, fans, sunblock and even swimming goggles on offer. For us, half the sun beds were way too hot - a westerner can't handle direct sunlight this close to the equator, especially not when it's 37C (99F)...

What truly sets Governor's Residence apart is their deeply personalized service. Every interaction with the staff felt genuine and attentive, ensuring that our stay was both comfortable and memorable. A special mention goes to Patrick and Tommy, along with the rest of the team, whose attention to detail, thoughtfulness, and heartfelt hospitality made us feel incredibly welcomed and valued.
The food experience at Governor's Residence was outstanding. Each meal was a delightful journey of flavors, with dishes that showcased the rich culinary heritage of Myanmar. The dining staff went above and beyond to cater to our preferences, adding an extra layer of satisfaction to our stay.
Nestled in nature, Governors Residence is a great place for families. The lush grounds, complete with peacocks, birds, and fishes, provided a serene and enchanting environment for both adults and children to enjoy. The interiors are very charming, combining traditional elegance with modern comforts.

Read moreThe only problem with this hotel, in my opinion, is that it beeing so very lovely, especially the area around the beautiful swimming pool, makes it hard to leave its grounds and face the heat and the noise and polution of Yangon. They do know how to spoil the guests -- with surprise appetizers or amuse-bouches before meals, and complimentary ice cream and other treats around the swimming pool, plus glasses of iced water being constantly handed and replenished. The Governor's residence building is a beautiful construction -- the only problem, the outdoor dining area being the opposite of dining al fresco. The garden is a marvel, a little Eden with several colourful birds singing their songs throughout the day (and the ever too smart, a bit annoying crows). Plenty of tall trees, bushes and flowers, especially orchids, create a magical green curtain enveloping the hotel, making one forget that one is in chaotic Yangon. Rooms are nice, though we would have enjoyed a touch more of décor -- which is truly exquisite around the common areas. Bathroom needs improvement, and only the cosmetics and kits I'd rate...
