When you book a room at The Strand, you're not just getting a room; you're immersing yourself in its long and fascinating history. Since my first visit to Myanmar in 2003, I have dreamed of staying at The Strand. After the hotel underwent extensive renovations in 2016, I wanted to stay there more than ever. This year, my wife and I finally had the opportunity to stay here, especially since there were some affordable offers. The hotel is pure luxury. It exudes the history of Aviet and Tigran Sarkies, the Armenian brothers who built it at the beginning of the 20th century (the Armenians' contributions to many cultures worldwiede is a story in itself) as well as the history of George Orwell, who once stayed here, and the many leading Burmese minds who came and went. |Each room is a suite with an upholstered sitting area and comes with a huge bathroom with historic tiles and fixtures. Delicious, freshly baked sweets were brought to our room every day free of charge. The heated pool, which is open also during the rainy season, offers pure relaxation. The architecture and historic furnishings are stunning. |But the best thing is the hotel staff. You can tell that none of them view their work as just a "job," but rather a calling. They are friendly, discreetly helpful, and professional, and they always smile. I could mention many of them, but I would like to name just two who helped us tremendously: the receptionist Ms. Thae Thae Khoon and the butler Mr. Hnin Ye' Hla. Thank you for making our stay...
Read moreI stayed at The Strand for a few nights on a business trip and was blown away by the experience. The rooms are simple yet elegant, covered with wooden floors and a beautiful bathroom with a separate bath tub/ shower unit. The rooms are spacious and the bed was so comfortable it let me sleep through my jet lag with no problem. The food was phenomenal, we ate the breakfast at the cafe each morning and were blown away by how delicious each meal was. The restaurant is simply great, they'll even let you order room service from their menu, which is ridiculously cheap. My co-worker and I were concerned of getting sick while working in Myanmar but we never had a problem at The Strand, truly an amazing place all around. If the pool or spa doesn't win you over it will be the service. The 24 hour butler service is amazing, they'll get you fresh coffee or tea and even leave some treats on your bed before you go to sleep. I've traveled around the world and this is my favorite hotel so far, truly an experience for royalty. No wonder Mick Jagger stayed here! Make sure to stay here if...
Read moreOf course a beautiful renovation and the addition of the pool and gym makes for a complete hotel. Staff were attentive and professional. Bedrooms very spacious and comfortable. The gym was too cramped, equipment too close together and no floor space for the mats that were provided. But it was adequate. The two disappointments were the bar, which served a flat g&t because the tonic tin had already been used and left open from the last time. When you are paying the price charged it should be a fresh tin with each drink. I also saw a cocktail being mixed where a mistake was made. Rather than start again a half hearted attempt was made to remove the offending liquid with a small spoon, and then give up and stir it in. It probably made no difference but it was unprofessional when those sort of prices are charged. The second disappointment was breakfast, quite frankly better to have a buffet than a menu order. It was badly cooked and the grilled tomato was half of a cherry tomato. Better to take...
