I enjoyed staying with Aashish, Sujata, and Manju for several weeks (March-April '23) as an IVHQ volunteer from New Jersey. I couldn't have been more pleased; every need I had was met. And talk about a room: I was accommodated on the beautiful rooftop terrace with a balcony that gazed over the Himalayan foothills. I would highly encourage couples to reserve this specific space.
Location: Kirtipur is not merely a place on a map, but a living canvas for human history. It’s a place where ancient temples coexist harmoniously with modern life, perched high along the hillside overlooking the capital city of Kathmandu.
Though Kirtipur Comfort Homestay is outside of central Kathmandu, it is incredibly easy, fast, and affordable to travel there via the app InDrive (similar to Uber, Lyft, etc). Thus, the location should encourage you. In fact, I recommend staying outside of Kathmandu for a full 360-degree experience. Kirtipur Comfort Homestay is an opportunity to experience Kathmandu Valley from the inside out.
Comfort: I have experience living in several homestays throughout Central/Southeast Asia as both a volunteer and a backpacker. I feel that my time at Kirtipur Comfort Homestay allowed me to connect the most deeply with my host family and fellow travelers. I also found the facilities clean, comfortable, and genuine. The house itself is quite large, allowing for some privacy, but also brings people together in the spacious living room. Kirtipur Comfort Homestay lives up to its name.
Food: Although I ended up eating out often with fellow volunteers, I loved the food provided by the homestay. Breakfasts are simple, but filling: an abundance of fresh fruit, toast, coffee, tea, and sometimes pastries. Dinners are cooked in-house - traditional Nepali cuisine - with offerings such as dal bhat. Vegetarians and vegans can surely be accommodated with these offerings. But we ordered Western-style dishes too, like pizza.
Assistance: If you are interested in exploring Nepal beyond Kirtipur (for example, weekend trips to Pokhara, Chitwan, etc), Aashish and Sujata can assist with booking excursions. Both speak beautiful and fluent English, so you should not be worried about miscommunication in this regard.
Overall... I believe you cannot travel and expect everything to be like home. You may find that what you are leaving behind cannot compare to the beauty you find on the road. Or perhaps it's just a different kind of beauty - and that is the joy of traveling.
Kirtipur Comfort Homestays was everything I could have wanted in a homestay and more. The family and travelers I met within those four walls legitimately changed my life (Aashish and Sujata can attest to this!) and I am wholeheartedly grateful to have stayed here.
I hope you gift yourself with this...
Read moreWe spent about 5 weeks in Kirtipur Comfort Homestay and we can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of our life! Aashish, Suju, Aama (Aashish’s mother), Anahat (cutest baby in the world) and Shani (their dog) didn’t only welcome us into their home but also into their hearts.
The homestay really is so comfortable and you feel cared for in every way imaginable. We never needed anything that we didn’t get from our lovely friends. From additional blankets/heaters to impromptu print-outs or soup when one of us had a cold - and most importantly great advice. Even before we arrived, we were in close contact and no questions were unanswered. Suju picked us up from the airport so we felt welcome from the first second! It’s very very clean and cozy. The family home is spacious, there’s a cozy living room and a great garden! The rooms are also very nice!
Included are 3 meals a day: Fresh fruit, yoghurt etc. for breakfast, Dal Bhaat (rice, lentil soup, pickles and usually another potato/veggie dish) for lunch and a variety of dishes for dinner. All are homecooked by Aama or another family member and taste AMAZING. Sometimes we also ordered in from very trusted and also delicious restaurants. They always made sure to ask about wishes and commodify our tastes - we were always soo happy with the food. Very important to say is that they take great care when it comes to dietary restrictions: Nora is celiac and thus can’t have gluten. This was never an issue, she felt soo safe and the family even made sure she could try glutenfree Momos (we did a cooking class). Aama even made glutenfree Nepali breads regularly. All food is vegetarian and being vegan would be no issue, either! This was better than we could have imagined!
Daily life was a highlight by itself in the family. We also did some additional acitvities that we really enjoyed: Aashish took us to the cinema twice, we visited Sujus’s welcoming parents and celebrated the Holi festival together. We had a blast!
Kirtipur itself is a bit quieter than the Kathmandu city centre and we can definitely recommend to stay there! We would choose this location over Thamel every time. The air is also better! If you want to visit you can go there by taxi (indrive) in about 20-30 minutes. The home is a 3 minute walk from the ring road/ the old Kirtipur city centre and about 10 minutes to the top of the hill where you can relax in one of the rooftop cafés. There are many shops and also a good gym not too far away. It’s not tourist-y at all which is a bonus!
We can’t wait to go back and visit our second family :) If you’re thinking of staying in Kirtipur Comfort Homestay - please do it!! You won’t regret it.
