I recently stayed at Haka Lodge and regrettably, my experience fell short of expectations. One of the most significant issues was the room, which, due to windows that do not open, left me feeling like I was confined to an airport waiting lounge.
The lack of fresh air and natural light created a stifling atmosphere, making the room feel uncomfortably cramped. The absence of proper ventilation not only affected the air quality but also made it challenging to escape the constant hum of the fan. It was as if I had checked into a space devoid of any connection to the outside world.
Understanding the potential health implications of stagnant air, particularly for someone prone to sinus infections like myself, I tried to check out earlier. Unfortunately, the hostel was unable to accommodate this request and did not allow changes to my reservation for a refund, preventing me from escaping the unfavorable conditions sooner.
In addition to the disappointing ambiance, the inability to open windows eliminated any chance of enjoying the surrounding scenery or even catching a glimpse of the local atmosphere. Missing out on these simple pleasures due to a design flaw was disheartening.
While I comprehend the necessity for security measures, the sensation of being boxed in without the option to open a window for even a brief breath of fresh air significantly impacted my overall well-being during the stay. I hope the management considers addressing this issue to enhance the overall comfort of guests, particularly those with health concerns.
I would caution potential visitors to think twice before choosing Haka Lodge, especially if they have health considerations, as my attempt to check out earlier was met with inflexibility from the...
Read moreVery pleasant stay at Haka, primely situated on the seafront of Paihia. This was very useful for tour meeting points (you basically just have to cross the road) and restaurants/supermarket.
Service was very good as well. Staff were friendly - particularly the British general manager who gave a warm welcome on check in and offered useful recommendations about sites in the area.
Rooms were decent. Room for improvement certainly but serviceable. Bed could have been a little more comfortable. I didn't encounter any bed bugs as has been reported in other reviews thankfully. One thing I didn't like - although there is storage in the room, there's no option to lock it securely, which made me a little uncomfortable leaving to do activities in the day. Hence why I've given the room 4 stars.
The on-site kitchen worked well, had nice views of the harbour and fridges weren't rammed like in other hostels, which was nice. Perhaps a reflection of the time of year since not in high season for another month or 2.

Read moreReally good hostel! Enjoyed my stay here. Flabbergasted about the good price, so cheap😳 payed more at other hostels that claimed to be as good, but this one I like better. Facilities are good (shower’s a bit too low for me😬), kitchen fine, it’s clean and the staff is quite young, but friendly. The only downside is that there was no window in my room, so opening the door was the only option to ventilate. Get’s really hot, there was a fan, however, doesn’t really do the trick. And the mattress should be replaced soon (room 1 last top bunk). The bed is really good: with curtains, socket next to the bed, a light and comfy pillow. Good atmosphere, not too big and amazing view from the kitchen over the sea!! Also, in the middle of town, next to all the bars and stores. The town is small, but this way you can go whenever to check it out! Beach is nice as well to go to. Oh ánd they think of the environment, which I really like. Environmentally friendly soap and signs to not let the water running, just an extra plus...
