A nice civilized little town with a mix of real kiwi buildings from the early European settlers, early to mid 20th century villas and some of the less attractive imposing new modern builds. There are impressive specimen trees such as figs, natives and old fruit trees. There impressive presence enhances the local environment. The little red phone box library is full of books with interesting titles. A gentle reminder of the civilized goodwill and trust in like minded people, that we may never meet. This can still be found in Pahia. There is the well marked bush walks above Pahia that start from fairly sedate up to more interesting to encourage more exploring if you have the time. The ferry service still runs across the bay which is a delightful experience passing the little islands along the way. Being greeted by a huge computer screen to buy our tickets is a big disappointment along with the now corporate inflated prices is the sign of 'progress' I suppose. A real threat to the authenticity of this place. This is an unwelcome surprise for some, like myself who remember the informal time honored kiwi way of doing things. While there is a few good jetties there ,it is hard to find one where you can casually moor a boat, as most moorings are designated. And there was no easily way of recognising them all without getting close . I'm grateful that it wasn't busy when we moored ,and were permitted to moor for longer than the specified restriction . I'm not sure what it would be like on a busy day , but it was the right time for us to visit Paihia ! For a casual mooring we found it by going around the left of the jetties to near the coastguard...
