Our stay was very much benefited by the choice to keep someone on the front desk 24/7 On our first night, we ran into an issue with our room where one of the windows, once opened, would not properly re-lock, with us being on the fire escape this presented a security issue. The clerk on duty saw it fit, instead of leaving us in worry, to change us to a different room where the issue was both not present, and unable to occur - something that would not have been possible without an actual human. The room we started in was simple, as intended, with adequate facilities and a really nice shower despite the backpacker nature of it. The bunks were sturdy even for a heavyset person. With the backpacker setup, there is a small kitchen with a large fridge available on the ground floor - a little hidden, but it looked well provisioned in terms of utensils and crockery. There was even a high chair for those in need. There is also a sitting room on the first floor filled with a gorgeous assortment of armchairs and a book nook. The room we were moved to had good space and the addition of a desk where we were able to set up my computer and I was able to get some writing done in comfort. The sound baffling between rooms appears solid, with no obvious sounds from other rooms heard. There is a guest laundry available, with both the washer and dryer wanting 2x$2 to run a cycle. There was an iron but it wasn't working for us - again we were able to let the staff know and hopefully this will be resolved. Housekeeping were polite and understanding, stepping up when they found we didn't have a "Do Not Disturb" sign to hang, finding one for us to add for the times we needed it. The building is old, with creaking floors and elevators that reflect this, but it still feels sturdy.

If I could give this zero star review I would! From the minute we walked into reception the man behind the desk was rude and abrupt to another customer on the phone. We got to our room to find the door very difficult to unlock this was maybe a blessing because upon walking into the room it was worse than a prison cell. The paint was peeling of the walls, the carpet was hideous and torn and there were cracks in the walls. The window didn't even shut, the bathroom was mouldy and the shower was so low I had to bend double to wash my hair. The beds... where do I start. The mattress was 2 inch thick at best and you could feel every single wooden lat below. Not only that but the lats were so unevenly spaced you could fit a whole person through them, this is definitely a massive safety risk as you could fall from the top bunk. We all had very little sleep and have started the morning crippled from a bad back from the awful beds. The toilet leaks and is constantly running and the bathroom door doesn't even lock. The decor of the room looks like something from my dead grandmas basement, it is dated and unsightly as well as unclean. We thought the hotel could revive itself with breakfast as it was advitised as included online but once at reception it was revealed it would be an extra $15, and that was for only toast and cereal! I would not pay to stay in this hotel a second longer than necessary. We have stayed in some questionable places but this definitely takes the top spot!

As much as I would have loved to give 20 out of 20 stars the Site for the Liviathan said 12dollars/person for the pastryless continental Breakfast I had Breakfast the first day and on the last day myself another adult and child had Breakfast and we were charged $53.55 this includes a surcharge of $1.05 dollars witch should have worked out to $49.05 with the surcharge but we were charged $53.55 witch we paid due to needing to head off to our Ferry booking but we also feel like we were somewhat racially profiled not just because of certain manorisiums of the host but also because when our stay was booked with Trivago the price of the oolong included the costs of this mediocre continental Breakfast. If we had known we would be treated this way we would have missed the out the gate expensive double take and paid this unnecessary hustle and gone to Deslas in Ricaton Christchurch with is a wonderful place to have Breakfast.
