We had a spontaneous dinner at The Jitsu on Saturday night. The place gets busy - you'll do well to book in advance! Vegan menu was outstanding. Tempura was not overly greasy, and was very tasty. My husband's yakiudon with tofu was melting in the mouth and was full of flavour. My sizzled teppanyaki with vegan meat was tasty too, but the "meat" was a little dry and plain. A bit of added flavour and moisture in that would be nice. The complimentary miso soup was a splendid way to begin the meal. Everything was served promptly and was very filling. Generous portion sizes, which was refreshing! In fact, we couldn't eat it all, and had leftovers this morning for breakfast 😁 Servers were very friendly and efficient. The only criticism is that the decor is a bit dated and could do with a refresh. Overall, we loved this place and will be going back.

One of our favorite showcase restaurants in Dunedin where we proudly bring all our guests. Some friends swear it's the best ever. Today was no different. We went for lunch, service a bit slow to start with. When the food takes over then you couldn't care for anything else in this world. Agadashi tofu, spicy tofu furai salad, kakaage, miso soup. Everything was as usual 10/10. Fresh salad leaves, well balanced dressings and umami rich flavors. omg this place is absolutely must in dunners. Three of us with 3 soups, 4 dishes and just $49. I could have paid double the amount for such high quality food. Thanks George for running such a fantastic place. Thank you chefs for another outstanding dining experience.

Don’t like the food at this place. We have ordered both donburi and tonkatsu udon. Sorry to say, their udon taste like those prepackaged you can get from countdown snd it’s not even soft. The soup for the udon taste just like instant noodle packaging powder or maybe worse. Quite disappointed as the reviews seem alright before we decided to go. The beef sukiyaki rice that we ordered was definitely below expectation as it taste like random stir fried beef(not like japanese at all). Service and environment was alright but not the food. Will not recommend this if you’re looking for good Japanese food.

We went here for my husband's 50th we took his 80 year old mother, who is fit and we'll and had flown from Auckland. The food was good as usual, however we sat at a bench seat that is on a platform, as she got up to leave there was no sign indicating a step and she fell from a good hight cracking her head on the floor. The whole restaurant went quite as people turned to look. The owner/manager was sat at a table opposite and never even came over to help as we had to pick her up from the floor. He never even came to see if she was ok. Now we usually eat here once a week but I've been appalled by his reaction. There is no sign on the table to warn of a step no markings on the edge of the step nothing. She could have been seriously hurt. Very disappointed by his don't care attitude so we won't go back again. Shame as he's let...

I dont often write bad reviews but just had a meal so bad we all had to laugh. 3 very small square tables for 10 people on our wedding anniversary, we had to ask for another table to be added. 2 menus for all 10 people to share. Our miso soup came out with the waitress saying they ran out of spoons so 1 person would have to drink it! They got nearly everyone's order wrong when my meal came out (bento mixed seafood box) it had no fish instead replaced with some kind of onions because they ran out. Another person had the wrong noodle soup given to them twice and just gave in and ate it because the rest of they group had finished! Shocking worst Japanese food ive had which is a shame because we have been there in the past and...
