my friend and i went for lunch about 2 weeks ago upon my recomendation. The wait staff were 2 young people who after the place got busy appeared to be out of their depth. i orderered a shrimp cocktail and for a main eggs and chips with a side of bacon and a sausage. my friend ordered mussels for an entre and pan fried blue cod for a main .Firstly my friend didnt read the menu and thought he was getting steamed mussels but were in fact grilled. when he asked the waitress should he not have received his entre she assured him that the cook was grilling them as we spoke. when our mains both arrived my meal had no sausage and my friends meal had the entre piled on top of the main course plate .not very satisfactory. The fish portion was exceptionally small given that the meal was worth 37 or 39 dollars.the waitress offered to have a sausage cooked for me but i said whats the point i had already eaten two thirds of my meal.To make matters worse an elderly couple who had been seated beside us had no menu ,when my friend pointed that out to the waitress she argued That they did she was wrong and she was wrong to argue with a customer about that. We are visitors from the deep south and have an appreciation of prices for blue cod etc but the weight of the fish would not have been 200g.i have been coming to the cafe for years now and will continue to so .But the owner needs to address this matter with her staff over there lack of understanding about ettiquette required in the hospitality industry .UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES .The customer is always right and the price for the fish meal did not...
Read moreNow, I was in Dunedin for a week and I ate 4 times there. The fish is quite good, especially the Elephant fish as kids would love it because the texture is like Chicken! Last time I ate I felt I was ripped off, they served me fish that was obviously had a strange taste (bad fish) &they insisted this is the way it should taste!!! Amazing for someone who ate 4 times there in a week and always same order and above all still argue with a customer! ! Although the staff are somehow friendly but the senior ones appear disengaged and the young waitresses (assuming local & international students) lake some of the service basics in this business. The new owner passed by sometimes and she looked passionate and I wished I could set and share her with my feedback but I didn't get the chance. There's a place for enhancements starting from staff, ...
Read moreHi, I was born and bred in Dunedin and my Dad and Mum always took us to the Best Cafe regularly as kids for dinner or tea. It was a treat. Dad always had the Bluff oysters and we had the yummy sausages. Now as a 63 year old who lives in Australia whenever I come back to Dunedin to visit family I always make a point of having a meal at the Best Cafe. I have taken my children and grandchildren there and still love the food. I love the bread with the butter swirls and the fact that the menu is the same as when I was a child.A visit there always brings back memories of my childhood. Never change it as it is nice to see something stay the same in this rushy world we live in. It is like a time warp when I go there and I always feel comfortable and at home again. Must get the T/Shirt!! See you in December on...
