Maggies — Restaurant in South Island

Arrived for a late lunch on a whim ~30min from closing. I was informed the kitchen was closed and only cabinet food available due to the hour. I'd seen someone eating a basket of fries on entry so specifically asked if this was available to be told no, just the cabinet food.

Given this I ordered a bacon and egg toastie, and a slice of fresh carrot cake, studded with poppy seeds and fresh nuts, thinking better of a cheeky beer, I ordered a mocha.

The cake and mocha promptly arrived, the cake tasted every bit as nice as it looked, unfortunately the mocha tasted burnt bitter and was below lukewarm temp with no detectable sweetness and some paradoxically strange sour taste. Even with several spoons of sugar it was regrettable and tasted unlike any mocha I've had before. Not sure if the milk was crook, beans or something else. This was surprising and disappointing to me as Dunedin cafés have good coffee and a few really excellent spots in my experience (Grid Mornington for example).

The toastie arrived after I'd hoovered up the cake, and I was likewise throughly impressed the whole seed/grain bread was great and the filling flavorsome.

The other unfortunate thing was fifteen minutes after my arrival while eating the toastie, two others arrived and while one sat down the other checked on ordering. A moment later popping his head round the doorframe to say "bad news, the kitchens shut, good news is they're doing cabinet food and ..curly fries." 🤔

Atmosphere is quirky and low key with some arcade machines and a homely retro vibe.

Would recommend for cabinet food but inaccurate ordering choice and poor coffee hurt...

Made an impromptu visit to Maggies this past weekend 😅

Let's just say I've found my new favorite cafe! If I could rate this cafe out of 10 stars, il give them all 10! 🌟

The service was incredible! The food was devoured within minutes.. served fresh, hot and ready to eat! I ordered the miso mushroom toastie and my husband ordered the breakfast burrito - both were incredibly delicious and packed with flavor👌🏻

Apart from the excellent food, the atmosphere at this cafe will leave you wanting to come back for more 😉 Plenty of seating available. Parking available alongside and opposite the cafe 💃

P.S: Don't forget to say hi to the little doggy that roams around...

Came just before noon for a quick bite, there was a short line which moved pretty quickly. Ended up grabbing the miso mushroom 🍄 toastie, and waited a fairly long time for what we though for the toastie to came out, later it was explained it was microwaved then finished on a pan. Either way, tasted fantastic and crunchy, although the bread was a little stringy due to it being microwaved but couldn't fault the flavour at all.

Loved the overall venue and vibe of the place, would definitely come back for some food, just be aware of...
