I recently spent almost a month at Mövenpick Hotel Ikoyi during a work assignment in Lagos. While there were some positives, the overall experience left a lot to be improved — especially for a hotel carrying an international brand name.
Rooms and Facilities
The overall structure of the hotel is visibly old, and it shows — particularly in the bathroom infrastructure, which is clearly in need of renovation. I stayed in Room 610, and here are a few critical observations:
The main room has very poor lighting, which makes the space feel dark and unwelcoming. The bathtub had visible cracks and signs of aging. The bathtub faucet broke during my stay. There was a persistent odor coming from the sink area. The hotel experienced several power fluctuations and outages. While this is a broader challenge in Nigeria, hotels of this category are expected to offer seamless backup support.
Service Restaurant & Food: One of the better parts of my stay. The food was consistently good, and the restaurant staff were polite and efficient.
Reception / Front Desk: Unfortunately, this was the weakest point. The front desk staff often struggled with basic questions and delayed simple processes. More training is clearly needed to improve communication, speed, and guest care.
Shoutout to Joshua: Joshua at the front desk was exceptional — helpful, knowledgeable, and solutions-oriented. His professionalism made a difference and should be acknowledged by management.
2.1 Loyalty & Long-Stay Considerations
For a guest staying over 20 days, the experience lacked thoughtful perks or value-adds. Examples:
I was charged ₦500 per page just to print some documents — a small service that should be complimentary for long-stay or business travelers. There were no courtesy laundry allowances. Hotels like Nordic offer 2–3 items cleaned weekly free of charge, which goes a long way in making long-term guests feel appreciated.
Environment and Guest Safety This needs to be addressed transparently.
Throughout my stay, I observed that certain women, clearly looking for clients, were present at the hotel almost every evening. They were not only visible but also freely walking around the lobby and restaurant area, approaching male guests without discretion.
I was personally approached on more than one occasion, and after firmly declining, I continued to see the same individuals on other nights, targeting other guests. Their presence was not incidental, it was frequent and clearly not being addressed by hotel security or management.
For a hotel operating under the Mövenpick and Accor brand, this is extremely concerning. It damages the professional atmosphere, compromises the safety and comfort of legitimate guests, and raises questions about the standards being upheld.
Hotels of this level must actively monitor and control who is allowed to roam the premises — especially in public guest areas at night.
Final Thoughts Mövenpick Ikoyi has potential: a good location, quality food, and a few standout team members. But for it to meet international expectations, urgent improvements are needed in:
Room and facility maintenance (especially bathroom upgrades); Improved training at the front desk; Basic benefits for long-term guests; Tighter control over the hotel premises to protect its professional environment;
Will I return? Let’s just say… I...

Read moreI was at this restaurant on 24th December 2020 in the evening to have dinner with 6 adults and 3 children.
The dinner was buffet which a server had to dish into your plate due to compliance with covid 19.
After the dinner the waiter brought the bill to me and it was over 140k. I didn't mind paying the bill but as I looked through the itemized bill I noticed that everyone of us except one was classed as an adult.
I called the waiter's attention to it and he told me to wait for him to get his supervisor as he couldn't explain it. The lady supervisor arrived to shock all of us by saying that a child of 10 is regarded as an adult in this hotel. I was like, oh this is incredible. I asked her to get the manager. Upon arrival the manager said the same thing but I took him up on it.
I went through a few examples in the world and told him it is abused to charge a child 10 years old as an adult at a restaurant where other places are letting kids under 15 eat free in other to promote their business. If it's 16 I can understand but not 10.
He later amended the bill. He also later brought me a cake which I was told earlier had finished.
To the manager's credit he tried to make amends which I appreciate but I will not be going there anytime soon or recommend it to anyone...
