I have stayed in the area several times (Selva Alegre) as it is nearby downtown and most of what you might need to do in Arequipa as a visitor. Villa del Carmen is a great deal. Ample rooms, well ventilated and great and friendly staff. Super helpful front desk personnel. ||The local is in what seem it was a grand house ('casona' is called). A short walk to the historic Plaza de Armas district that was teeming with activities for visitors. Shopping and restaurants are plentiful as are the sites such as the Monasterio de Santa Catalina & Basilica Catedral de Arequipa. The central area is vibrant and secure both day and evening with plenty of sights and activities to sample. Hotel stored our luggage for two days while we traveled to Colca Canyon which was...
