Came here earlier this year. My profile pic is of a vicuña head. Great place to learn about South American camelids. There is also a small exhibit/museum telling you the history of these animals etc.
Staff is bilingual and very welcoming. Very touristy as well.
Entrance is free and the location is in an alright area. Taxi ride from downtown takes 10 mins or so and only costs a few dollars. Don’t remember exactly how much though.
Bring a jacket as it can get a bit chilly at times.
There’s a huge pen where you can interact and feed the llamas, and aplacas. They are very friendly and cuddly, but beware that they can also spit and run away if they feel threatened.
There is also a store available selling a range of alpaca products. All of their merchandise is made in Peru and is well made. I bought a few items. They also sell some vicuña as well but it’s verrry expensive.
Vicuña scarves and gloves start from $500 USD and up. A vicuña jacket/blazer can cost as much as $18K USD. Feel free to try some vicuña items on as you’ll probably never own a vicuña item! It’s very soft and can only be experienced in person.
In conclusion, it’s a good place to spend a few hours and admire the scenery as well....
Read moreIt's a great museum and free. I recommend adding this to your list when in Arequipa.
In the entrance, there are panels on the walls with different information, which leads to a paddock with a few llamas and alpacas chilling and eating. There is a fence to keep them safe and stress free.
The next area there are piles of wool being sorted, more information panels, and a few videos being played. There are also samples of wool for you to touch.
In the next area, you can see people making products with the wool. Please bring money with you to make a donation for any photos you take.
There is a production line with various machines for the different stages that the wool is created.
Another room with machines and information for the packing and international shipping.
In this section, there are textiles from different parts of the country. You will see how different the designs are.
In the last room there is art. I am not sure if this is a permanent or temporary exhibition.
This museum is suitable for all ages.
There is a coffee shop and clothes shop. You will also find for sell some crochet tools and yarn.
I really enjoyed it here and it was bigger than I expected. I can't...
