Life Is Too Short to Miss Opole!
Driving on the new superhighway A4 from Wroclaw to Opole in southern Poland you will probably reach your destination in less than an hour. But if you’d like to receive some genuine impressions of provincial life in this Upper Silesian region we recommend you to use the splendidly constructed highway no. 94 which will allow you stops here and there to see more of Silesian architecture and trade in small towns and villages you may pass. Well, we followed an insider’s tip and decided to spend some few days in the city that is the capital of Opole Voivodeship and the seat of Opole County in Upper Silesia with countless German speakers in the past. But even nowadays, many German Upper Silesians and Poles of German descent live in the Opole region. Steeped in history, Opole with its distinctive character these days is well on track to become a modern European city. Our trip brought us to the lavishly renovated Hotel Mercure sitting just a stone’s throw away from the railway and bus stations. But no noise annoyance to our convenient and roomy apartment on the 3rd floor! Highlights were a cozy king-size bed and literally everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Everything was clean as a whistle, floors, bathroom, work desk and our bed left nothing to be desired. Flat-screen TV with numerous international channels. And the free WiFi internet access came with a speed that was really high enough to even enjoy watching movies. Front Desk staff were simply lovely, all of them impressed us with their good command of English, and their willingness to help in every situation. We think the Opole Mercure Hotel can be called an Accor flagship that truly represents traditional values of the hospitality industry under the dedicated direction of their GM. Parking lots can be found directly behind the hotel but you’ll need to strictly follow intructions to get there - Opole seems to be packed with one-way streets… A bountiful breakfast was served at the hotel’s Winestone Restaurant - and it was one the best buffet breakfasts we ever had! Fresh, delicious bread, fried eggs, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, sausages, a whole wealth of cheeses, fresh fruits, countless variations of coffee or tea – You name it! Moreover, the service staff was always willing to cater any of our needs. The historic part of the city is in walking distance and there are definitely lots of things to enjoy: museums, bridges, churches and a cathedral, remains of a Piast castle. And more restaurants and cafes. Silesian cuisine including their mouth-watering pastries are a real gourmet’s paradise! Unfortunately, the rain started upon our arrival, and it didn’t pass off before we departed after three days so we could not see all attractions that were on our list. But you know what? We are no quitters which is why we will not give in. We will for sure return to see the rest or more. And you can make a guess where we will stay… We at PHIL'S WORLD TRAVEL recommend this property to...
Read moreVery quick trip to Poland, I arrived rather late as just before 3am and I called the hotel to advise I will be checking in late due to my late flight. The receptionist was fantastic, ensuring me my room will be ready, so I had nothing to worry about. When I arrived, the rooms was ready, despite being 3am, receptionist was very welcoming, ensuring and super helpful! She made this check in so easy and hassle free! Despite having a room with window facing main street, there was zero noise coming from the outside, which was very comfortable and allowed me to sleep longer! So that was a great plus! My booking was a room only, but I asked for breakfast and there was no problem, they just added me to the list. Check out was just as painless and easy. Good to mention, they do have a car park at the back of the hotel which is only 40zl for 24h, so it makes is super easy and stress free, because there was very spacious. Great stay, and I will...
Read moreWas moved to the De Silva premium hotel 150 metres from the one I booked (due to it being closed during the Christmas holidays).||I can only comment on the room and it was lovely. The huge pillow made for such a good sleep. The room has lots of extras such as shoe polish and shoe horn in the cabinet, sewing kit in the drawer, cotton buds, body lotion and wet wipes in the bathroom (unfortunately no toothpaste which I found odd). Also has a fridge with free water that the maids replenish whenever the maids clean the room.||I stayed in room 126. The window restricter was broken but it didn‘t matter to me. There’s a platform outside the window so no danger, but still need fixing.||Many lights in the room too along with small bed lights attached to the wall. Apparently the hotel is four years old. The decor looks fantastic and the reception area was decorated superbly for Christmas. I’ll definitely be stopping by...
