Quinta de Valverde offers 5 different cottages on the slope of a hill, just above the town of Viana do Castelo. The houses are fully equipped and tastefully decorated, maybe a bit "eighties-like" and somewhat outdated, but everything is working perfectly and all one needs for a pleasant stay is there. The houses are clean and the view from the hill is breathtaking. There is a nice swimming pool on the estate, which is owned by a (obviously wealthy) Portuguese enterpreneur, who also owns a big mansion on the same grounds. Staff is helpful and friendly. It would have been a perfect paradise, if not for the large collection of birds (like chickens) that the owner keeps in cages near the cottages. The noise they produce upon sunrise will propably kill your sleep and also at night they sometimes react to wild animals that are cruising the estate (we noticed a fox late in the evening). That really is a pity, because the target audience of the Quinta de Valverde are probably people seeking a peacefull holiday in an individual environment. There is a luxerious hotel just a few hundred meters up the hill, which might be a better choice. One minor last point of criticism might be the bed. Our apartment offered a lot of space (45 m2 is way more than a standard hotel room), but our bed was only 140 cm wide. All in all it is a pity, because it...
Read moreQuinta de Valverde is located on a large acreage one of the highest points of the town of Viana do Castelo. It is a hike up the hill to the apartment. We got a cab on the first day and walked up and back twice a day, each day. We enjoyed the challenge of the walk (we are of retirement age, but reasonably fit),||The apartment was wonderful. Our unit was more like a small house, very private with an amazing view of the town and surrounding region. The apartment was outfitted with superior appliances, including; fridge, stove, dishwasher, freezer.||The table and chairs inside were not great, but there were two sets on the veranda and the weather was perfect to eat outside.||There are many cats on the property. One or two might visit but do not try to enter the house. There are many birds (roosters, ducks, geese, swans, etc). They can be noisy during the day but are quiet at night.||There is an outdoor pool, but we didn't try it.||We loved our stay and are considering returning for a...
Read moreSo first up we were nervous about the birds on here but they were fine. Our room was a long way from them but no sound. The gardens are incredible. It is owned by a family - we met the granddaughter who now runs it and has spent every summer there - just a magical place. We could Helene spent a week but we are on the Camino! The pool is heaven with amazing views and super deep. For a one night stay it was a shame the toiletries were a bit poor but the room was lovely and super comfy beds with robes etc. wifi was ok. The bad bad bad part was our visit clashed with the horrendous NeoPop festival which was thumping loud dance music from 5pm until 8.30am. Appalling and no escape. Worst sleep. Another time -...
