We had a fantastic stay at Maputaland Guesthouse in St. Lucia and can highly recommend both the guesthouse and Jörg, the host, as a guide. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed. Jörg is an incredibly warm and knowledgeable host who made our holiday truly special.

The guesthouse is ideally located – everything in St. Lucia is within walking distance. You could also walk to the beautiful beaches. The rooms are tastefully furnished, the beds extremely comfortable, and the quiet surroundings made for restful nights. A real highlight was the delicious breakfast served every morning with care and attention to detail.

St. Lucia itself is a unique destination – in the evenings, hippos roam the streets, grazing peacefully right in the village! Day trips to nearby national parks offered fantastic wildlife sightings and breathtaking landscapes.

Before checking in at Maputaland Guesthouse, we spent 10 days on safari with Jörg, who organized everything for us. His expertise and deep knowledge of South African wildlife and nature enriched every moment of our trip. From game drives to hidden gems off the beaten path – it was an unforgettable adventure.

We recently spent a wonderful 3 weeks in South Africa - our first trip. Our few days at Maputoland Guest House was one of the highlights. The hosts take a genuine and personal interest in their visitors and offered excellent local advice including “bathe don’t swim” on a beach known for rip tides. We really appreciated the town of St Lucia including at a distance hippo spotting in the evening. The local restaurants were great. iSiMangaliso Wetland park nearby was wonderful in all respects. The tours recommended to us (bird watching and a river trip) were with v small groups and ideal. The rooms and substantial breakfasts were 5*. Fantastic stay at Maputaland Guest House. Our host Jörg communicated well before our arrival, was warm and welcoming when we arrived and very supportive with giving help when we had issues with our car hire company. Jörg also gave good advice on things to do in the area - we even saw a leopard where he suggested we might! - and made bookings for us for the hippo boat cruise. The staff were wonderful - they helped me learn some Zulu which I loved doing. The guest house is quiet and relaxing. The breakfast is excellent. And the swimming pool most welcome on a hot day.
