With thanks to the attentiveness and design nous of Brian, Jacqueline and cleaner Anna, we had one of the most relaxing, chilled and luxe holidays in a long time staying at Nieuwerust in early January. Despite temperatures reaching over 35 degrees on many days, we were always pleasantly cool, thanks to the divine saltwater pool, air-conditioning and the clever design of the house, always a sanctuary of calm to escape the heat outside. All 3 bedrooms en-suite are immaculately appointed, leaving no needs unmet - from mozzie spray to insect-proof windows, soaps and oils and spices - and a very thoughtful welcome pack of cookies, figs, local olive oil and a voucher pack to spend at Prince Albert restaurants and shops. The house is also kitted out with puzzles, games and a great library, and incorporates beautiful elements of design, such as Brian's collection, inherited and purchased, of vases, knick-naks and objet that tell their own story. Read moreNieuwehuys is definitely not the standard vacation home – it is a very well-appointed home-away from-home with incredible attention to detail. Every carefully planned detail speaks of high quality and comfort. Think Le Creuset cookware, a “full house” of Smeg appliances, underfloor heating, aircon in the bedroom etc.

Jacqueline is a very kind and thoughtful hostess, and we were privileged to meet the owner, Brian Rademeyer, during our recent visit. He popped over one late afternoon for a visit that we thoroughly enjoyed as if we were old friends.
Our recent stay was the third one this year and we hope to be back soon!
We left Nieuwehuys and Prince Albert with heavy, but...
Read moreIt has been more than 10 years since our previous visit to Prince Albert. This round we stayed overnight in Nieuwehuyz. And what a pleasant surprise it was. Arriving there on a day when it was snowing in the Swartberg mountains, Nieuwehuyz had all the warmth and comfort we needed to make us feel at home in this beautiful village. The house is completely off the grid, and there were aircon, hot water, a cozy fireplace, insulated windows, a feather duvet and even heated towel rails. The stylish combination of antique family furniture and artifacts from the owner’s Karoo family home, with modern art pieces that include an amazing collection of Joshua Miles landscapes, made it feel like Grandma’s home, but with a luxurious upgrade! I wish there was time to explore the interesting book collection in the house. So we’ll have to...
