My 82-Year-old mother was TRAPPED in the ELEVATOR for nearly an HOUR — Deeply Disappointing and Unsafe Experience!
We stayed at Ikonik Angli in Barcelona for a few nights with my 82-year-old mother. Although the hotel is in a quiet, beautiful neighborhood and our room had large windows overlooking greenery, our overall experience was stressful and disappointing — and at times, truly alarming.
On the day we arrived, a heavy rainstorm hit the city. Shockingly, water was pouring through the elevator shafts and flooding in front of the elevator doors like a waterfall. It looked like a shower coming from the ceiling. I was too exhausted after a long flight from the U.S. to film it, but it was incredibly concerning.
The next day, both elevators were completely out of service, forcing my elderly mother to take the stairs — no easy feat. To make matters worse, people were sitting in the stairwells smoking, and we had to carefully maneuver around them. This should not be allowed.
But the most serious incident happened the following evening: MY MOTHER GOT TRAPPED IN THE ELEVATOR FOR NEARLY AN HOUR. The emergency call button didn’t work. Thankfully, she had just enough phone signal to reach the front desk, who contacted the elevator technicians. She was eventually freed, but by then she was sore from standing so long, frightened, and visibly shaken. The hotel’s only response? A complimentary breakfast.
Speaking of breakfast — I’ve traveled extensively, and I’ve never encountered a hotel that made such a production out of checking guests in for a buffet. A woman stood guard like a drill sergeant, scrutinizing each person’s name. And frankly, the breakfast was terrible: watery coffee, tasteless powdered eggs, and stale pastries.
On the day we checked out, I called a taxi that arrived a bit earlier than expected. I sent my mother outside while I retrieved our suitcase from the front desk. When I explained the situation — that our taxi had arrived and my elderly mother was waiting outside alone — the receptionist continued checking in another guest and ignored me, even though our suitcase was right beside her. Only after I firmly repeated myself and reminded her that my mother was the same woman who had been trapped in their elevator did she hand it over, clearly annoyed.
Another letdown: the pool is not open year-round. It’s closed until June, which is something to note if you’re visiting outside summer months.
The only real positive was the housekeeping staff. They were consistently friendly, attentive, and kept the room clean and comfortable.
Despite the tranquil setting, the lack of safety protocols, empathy, and reliable service made this stay one we’d...
Read moreI stayed here twice. Purely for it's proximity to a nearby hospital where I was getting some stuff done.||First stay was just 2 nights. Not a lot to report. Things that stickout in my mind were the stained bathroom floor and being asked to pay the 2 euro city tax at checkout when it was already paid. She immedietely realised her mistake but I recommend just paying it at checkout to avoid any issue. Did not try the breakfast as I had to fast.||My second stay was for 5 nights. Much the same as tthe first except that I tried the breakfasts. The bathroom still looked dated and crusty around the edges and also the entire floor floods each time you shower.||For some general points. I find the place decent although I would get the same room in Thailand for 35 euro. ||Wifi fast and free. ||Room service... Theres a menu but it seems they order it through uber eats or something. ||Rooms - Generally ok. Decent size. Bed soft enough and big. Safe box. TV but with limited english channels. Bathrooms look tired but could mostly be fixed with a good scrub in the cracks.||Apparently theres a swimming pool in the basement or something but I wasn't really interested.||Breakfast buffet - Same everyday but no complaints. I looked forward to it everyday. The little chorizos were so tasty. The coffees and selection was all really great. The only thing I would change is add some more vegetable options. The stale hot vegetables is not very nice and could be more interesting.||Location - Good if your here for the nearby hospital. Apart from that the area feels a little isolated. Theres a few eateries nearby but not really interesting.||Discount - So after the first stay you get an email with a code for a discount next time. This combined with another discount on the website made it extremely cheap the 2nd trip (98 euro).||Staff - Were all very nice generally. However regarding housekeeping they seemed to spend hours each day standing right near my door jabbering away. With a whole hotel to clean I don't know why they had to do this right by my door. Very annoying.||Overall it was a good option for the area but given the price of using cabify (30euro for 15 min drives) I felt a bit isolated and the lack of food options was annoying however there is uber eats but all in spanish.||I would stay again but if I didn't need to visit the hospital I would definitely choose somewhere...
Read moreThis hotel was fine, and yet quite confounding. What should have been a fine experience otherwise was marred several stupid and small flaws, which would be really easy to fix, if there was any will at all on the part of management: | |1) Check-in - with only one person before me, took 20 minutes. Computers were not working. | |2) Privacy policy - I was made to sign a paper, but after signing the person kept the paper. I had no copy so no record of what I signed. | |3) Room: Totally baffling array of switches for the lighting system, impossible to decipher. | |4) Hair dryer: broken, screeching sound and no air coming out. Wondef if the staff bother check them? I was quite scared and turned it off immediately. | |5) Contacting reception - I had to use my mobile phone to call the front desk to report the hair dryer, at which time i was told that the number to contact reception was 1700. Amazing. NO one said that on check in. I did later discovered it was handwritten on the key-card paper, but the receptionist could have bothered to point that out. | |6) Elevators. Ridiculous! I visited several floors to find the way back to reception. There is a giant sign OUTSIDE the elevator that says 0 for reception. But INSIDE the elevator there is no "O", only "B". I finally go thtere, but I mean seriously, how unhelpful. | |7) Invoice - I requested an invoice at reception on departure. When I got home I discovered it is not even a correctly done official invoice for VAT purposes. It was issued on a plain piece of paper, lacked the company name address and VAT number, and they didn´t bother to put my info on it. | |I had to write to atencion cliente and comercia1 to request a new one. | |Items 5 and 6 could be so easily solved with small stickers (one for each phone, two for each elevator). | |How much effort is that? Obviously too much. | |I should add, that the stay was otherwise fine. This could be a five star experience. Except, it isn't. | |These are small things. Never have I encountered a hotel that gave off such a feeling of no one caring at all...
