What a lovely experience we had in guesthouse Al Campanario (The Bell-Tower) this autumn!
We stayed in “The Loft” (the upper room) for four nights: a spacy bedroom with a cosy salon and an adjacent open bathroom. It offered every kind of comfort, including a television-set and homely atmosphere. The bed was almost king-size and extra pillows were available on demand. Every morning we enjoyed an extensive breakfast buffet: freshly baked bread, several kinds of fillings, croissants, rolls, fruits, cereals, yoghurt, small cakes and cookies… And on top of that, each morning the landlady (or landlord?) provided a little culinary surprise: a perfectly boiled egg, homemade cake or madeleines, an extra yoghurt dessert, goat cheese and mango on toast, pancakes … A real treat we seldom experienced anywhere else! Annemie sure is a great cook! She even cooked us dinner on the first night we arrived : an exquisite zarzuela! You can also relax in the cosy living-room with a good book and a drink from the honesty bar. A nice touch is the fireplace which offers a friendly warmth during the somewhat colder November evenings.
All the rooms are nicely decorated and from the roof terrace you can enjoy a splendid view on the lovely white houses of Competa, bathing in the bright sunlight.
Willy and Annemie surely are the most friendly hosts you could imagine: you can count on them to give you suggestions on the interesting things to see and do in the vicinity, they will book your tickets, even help you to carry up your luggage (the are a lot of stairs!), call for information about the Nerja Caves… no problem! And you can simply have a very nice chat with them too!
There are a lot of things to discover in the surroundings; we had already visited the traditional Andalusian cities of Cordoba and Granada, but also closer to Competa you can go and enjoy the very lovely white “pueblos”, have a nice walk to the nearby village or an extended stroll in the natural park, take the car to Malaga, Torrox or Nerja… A lot of things to see and do!
I’m sure we will be...
Read moreThis is a delightful B&B in an attractive Andalusian "white village" that is probably unfairly overshadowed by nearby Frigiliana. The hosts are very professional (communications were excellent and very prompt) and yet cordial and relaxed; just the right combination. ||||The accommodation - we were in the Loft, but we peeked into the other rooms - is clean, well-appointed and tastefully decorated, with comfortable bed, decent bathroom lighting, and so on. There is a lovely roof-top terrace, too. Quite a lot of stairs to negotiate, if this is an issue. Breakfast was fine, in a pretty downstairs room with a fireplace. Pancakes on the first morning were an unexpected treat. ||||The location is ideal, although parking close by is a bit difficult (if carrying heavy stuff, probably best to come and drop it off quickly before going down to the main parking area), and Cómpeta itself looks like it could be a good base for hiking, with several attractive trails around. ||||In sum, Al Campanario ticked all our boxes for a two-night stay, and we would have no hesitation in recommending Willy & Annemie as perfect hosts. Even the restaurant suggestions - not always a given - were right on the ball on this occasion. ||||Strongly...
Read moreDiscovered this hidden gem after reading excellent reviews from past guests and decided to spend a night in Competa to experience it first hand. The entire place is about 6 floors which each floor dedicated to a specific room type. When we arrived for check-in at 4pm, we were warmly greeted by the couple who seems to be the owner of the place. Every detail of the place from the interior design to the little amenities just instantly makes you feel cosy and at home. Although it's not a 5-star hotel but the rooms were clean and they had everything you would ever think you need from a hotel. Down to the little detail of a complimentary cold bottle of water in room upon arrival (amidst this summer heat, you would definitely not forget this sort of excellent detail 🥲)! Most commercial hotels in Spain wouldn't even provide a bottle of water without charge so it's really incredible to wonder how courteous the owners are. Highly recommended to everyone who ever wants to experience living in Competa to pick this place to stay. Will elaborate more on specific...
