Overview||The hotel is at least 30 mins drive from Edinburgh airport. The hotel is walking distance to Newkirkgate shopping centre and the shops nearby. Whilst we there the entire road was closed to vehicles due to ongoing construction where the tram extension will eventually be running right outside the hotel. There is however a shared car park behind the hotel for easier drop off with those that have luggage and would have been a great tip if we known of the rear entrance of this Hotel prior to arrival as we had to lug our luggage through the construction site to get to the front of the hotel. There are ample bus stops and huge number of bus service running just a short walk from the hotel.||||Check in/Check out:||Check in is normally at 2pm but we had our room ready as soon as we got there which was around Noon. There is no lift at this hotel and only stairs. A slight challenge if you have kids and a lot of heavy luggage but the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They offered us advise, gave us maps of the area and were very welcoming. Check out was by 10:30AM ||||||Our Room||We had a family room which had two single beds and a kids bunkbed, A flat screen TV. There was a small fridge. A huge range of snack bars were provided as well as water bottles and two juices which were a real treat. There is a bookshelf outside the rooms and guests are welcome to read fiction and non-fiction books. There was a kettle provided and provisions available for tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. The bathroom was very small but clean. The door was a bit noisy when we opened it and very stiff which did not help when a family of four are sharing the room. There are lots of towels provided and a mixer tap would be much easier to use than separate cold and hot water taps. The shower was very powerful and bathroom looked recently refurbished. There is a common kitchen on the ground floor with a huge dining table and we had use of this kitchen, microwave, fridge but cooker was out of bounds so just use of microwave and in case you wanted to sit down and have cereals or a quick take away.||||Location||The location of this hotel is good but located in Leith – a slightly run down area on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The advantage of this area is that the room rates are not as steep as the town centre and yet you have easy access to the town centre using public transport. Many shops and a few restaurants within walking distance of the hotel but mainly takeaway shops. The impact of Covid was clear with the sheer number of shops that had shut down and graffiti visible. The construction of the tram has a huge impact and limits movement of traffic especially public transport. The location will get popular once the tram construction is complete and functional but seems it will not happen in the next few months. There is a good size Tesco within a short walking distance which was very helpful for us to stock basics.||Overall this is a very cosy guest house which gives a very homely vibe. We really enjoyed...

Craig was super nice and helpful!|The room was cosy, not a cookie cutter soulless hotel room but homely and comfortable.|The beds were really comfortable, everything was pristine clean and the room smelled amazing. There was plenty of towels and the shower had good water pressure.|There was a kettle, tea and coffee in the room, water, irn bru, and juice in the fridge, and some cookies and croissants, and the kitchen downstairs was available for use and even had plant based milks for our coffees.|The tram line went just past the window but was really silent and didn't bother us at all.|We could hear people talking in the next room at one point but there was otherwise no sound coming from inside the building. |The location was excellent; a short walk from the city centre, a few minutes walk to the tram or buses, and with the tram you get effortlessly to the city and the airport.|There were a few places just around the corner to get vegan breakfast, a Tesco Superstore some five minutes walk away, loads of cafes and pubs.|The neighbourhood felt safe and quiet, really happy we ended up in Leith.|The check out time was at 10 but we got to leave our luggage and picked them up later so that was also a huge plus!|Great value for money, would recommend, definitely booking again next time...
Read moreWe stayed for 2 nights at Pillars House. Edna and Craig were very responsive to emails ahead of our stay and even though there wasn't a hot breakfast, I appreciated the well stocked fridge and pantry complete with Irn Bru. The room had every necessity, including a hair dryer. We had a room on the second floor in the back, which was very quiet overall. ||There is no elevator, so if you need that, you may want to inquire about a ground floor room. The location is great- very convenient to the tram line which will take you toward Ocean Terminal (to see the Royal Yacht Britannia) or down to the city center with convenient stops at Princes Street and St Andrew Square. It's maybe 60 minutes from the airport via the tram (use the Foot of the Walk stop). ||Coming from the US with an early arrival (meaning middle of the night for us!), I appreciated the 10AM check in time. It can be quite a drag (sometimes literally) when you can't check in until the afternoon after a long overnight flight. Thank you...
