We Enjoyed the devoncourt hotel firstly the staff friendly and seemed happy to help.the hotel as has been said is in a desperate need of renovation.its very dated.we had a nice size room but I'm afraid we didn't find the beds comfortable they were very soft and it was like being on a trampoline when you turn over. The staff was great and put bed boards under the mattress for my husband as he is recovering from a back op.The view from our room was lovely room 110 we overlooked the gardens and sea in the distant was lovely to see the boats sailing by.a small fridge in the room was very good as the weather was hot and was greatful for kettle for tea coffee making .breakfast was adequate the usual cereals fruit (although tinned would have liked to have seen some fresh watermelon sliced up) they did provide some fresh fruit Inc bananas and grapes hot breakfast was lovely and all lovely and hot but a personal thing just prefer my eggs cooked fresh rather than sitting in a dish .choisants were not available everyday which was a shame, but hey ho.the staff in the restaurant was very cheery especially the little dark haired girl she was always singing/humming along to the music played. The pools.... the weather was fantastic so we used the outside pool frequently it was lovely but the changing rooms were rather drab dated and need a good renovation, there was no toilets at the outside pool 👎 not sure this is very hygienic tbh but the addition of the fridges in the changing rooms to keep your essentials drinks cool was fab considering you can't purchase them at the pool.the pool is screened with lots of trees and plants which give protection from the wind 5* I do think there should definitely be a hand rail for where you step in to the pool as I saw more than one person loose there step.it could do with a good jet wash around the walkways of the pool also a additional small toddler play maybe splash pool would be great idea to the side of the pool but totally understand it would be in the full responsibility of the parents to guard there children .the inside pool and jacuzzi nice with comfortable temps but again needs a serious renovation and really good clean round the pool walkways the changing room again old and tired.we stayed here for 4 nights the location was great a short walk through the gardens to the seaside, the hotel even though tired and dated was very pleasant as was all the staff we spoke to, we met some lovely guests at the hotel that return year after year so I hope this hotel gets the renovation it deserves not only for the guests but for their dedicated staff too . The major let down for this hotel is the parking although it's free to park there just isn't enough space, albeit said we did enjoy our stay the location staff breakfast pools were great and I'm sure we would definitely give it another go in the future .it felt safe comfortable and the gardens are gorgeous too ! Well done to all...
Read moreI''m sure in it's heyday this was s wonderful place, and it almost still is. I don't know when it was built, but it' s showing it's age now. The floorboards creak, the headboards wobble, the floor tiles in the three bathrooms I used didn't meet the edges, the furniture is shabby ----all signs of age, and of course unavoidable.
However, the one thing that lifts it above these problems is the staff. Without exception (and that in itself is unusual!) they are friendly and efficient. Nothing is too much trouble; they go out of their way to help. And they seem to act as a team. No friction between departments. I wish there were more praise I could heap upon them, but I think what I've said covers it.
Of course, it does have a tennis court, a gym, an indoor swimming pool, a pool room, a bar, a restaurant, um .......
Our booking was last minute ,---- would I go there again with more time to compare? There's s Premier Inn down the road which must be providing serious competition. I'm afraid Devoncourt will have to pull it's socks up.
But I'd go there again!
Additional info. I'm sorry if anyone feels this was over-critical. It wasn't intended to be, and I stand by what I said. However, there were other good things I could perhaps have mentioned, having read some other reviews. The breakfast layout was astonishing, probably the best I've ever seen. I probably didn't give it it's due becsuse I don't eat breakfast! The toast was good though. And the yoghurt. The friend who recommended it to me thought I should have mentioned the gym and the swimming pool, but again, as I used neither, they slipped my attention. Actually,it was rather like an old country hotel. So if that's your thing, go to Devoncourt. I shall go again - prices are remarkably good, too! And thanks again to the friendly,...
Read moreJust okay, really. This is my second time staying at Devoncourt. I still love the seventies charm, the facilities are still very decent, the food was delicious, the beds were really comfortable, the location was fantastic for getting to the beach...however, as a hotel it just looks tired. You could say, it just needs a bit of TLC. The toilets in our room didn't flush properly, the taps were loose and leaking, the water temperature was all over the place and one of the nights, we were woken up by the most horrendous banging at 4am. We went down to the main desk to complain and all we got was a small explanation about air being trapped in the pipes and that they've had other complaints before. There was no apology. At times, the customer service at the main desk and room service was also a little suspect. One of the only staff members (on the main desk) that really stood out to us was Martin. He was great. He always had a smile on his face, he was approachable, helpful and very pleasant to deal with. Just a really nice chap. The room service was also a bit sloppy/rushed (e.g. leaving dirty cloths and cleaning fluid on the coffee table). The towels were sometimes replaced with new ones, but then other days they weren't. The used ones were never really taken away either. I had to go down to the reception desk to ask for more. I don't mean to complain, but these little things just make a stay more pleasant. All in all, our second stay at Devoncourt was a fairly good one and I think they've done really well with trying to stay afloat, during the COVID crisis. I can imagine it's taken a fair bit of planning to be able to have guests stay at the hotel and partake in the facilities again. So,...
