Hidden Away But So Worth The Quest

In the residential redevelopment of the old-but-iconic Terry’s chocolate factory, on the outskirts of York, is a real little treasure: modern British cookery with an Italian nonna. There is some great cooking here!

I’ve eaten there twice this week and, at its price point, it’s seriously good and great value. A real commitment to quality.

Characterised by a short but regularly changing menu, the quality is excellent, with lovingly respected, quality ingredients.

Weekdays, there’s a limited set menu of super value (worth calling ahead to check it out), which I liked so much I booked to return for Sunday luncheon, which offers an expanded set menu.

And I’m so glad I did. The three course Sunday menu is genuinely great value and sublime (2 courses for £30/3 for £34), plus some specials.

Shout outs this week for a indulgently super butternut squash soup of epic depth of flavour, with added zing from a sensational smoked almond & kale pesto; an amazing risotto that perfectly complimented the most gorgeously unctuous, slowly braised ox cheek; absolutely perfect salt-cod fitters (with a garlic aioli that would win a fight in a Marseille sailors’ bar & still seduce you after); and a panna cotta with such a sexy shimmering, it ought to come with an 🔞 rating (elevated with exquisite honey-soaked figs).

Service is smiley; attentive, but unfussy. They love to answer questions about their food.

Good cocktails, carefully and properly made, & a wine list curated for a fun gambol (good options by the glass too).

It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a place as much as this.

You can come for gourmet sandwiches & bruncheon dishes in the week too. Also there’s an emerging deli, where I picked out some take-home treats.

This is a great addition to the York food scene

As local residents we have eaten at The Old Liquor Store a few times now. It’s hidden away but worth a visit if you’re nearby. Breakfast is great. I had the smoked salmon and eggs and my wife had a granola bowl. Both were excellent. We also visited for lunch. My wife had a pizzetta and I had sandwich with a side of courgette fries. While the food is great we both thought the pricing is a little high for what you get. The pizzetta in the picture was £12 with the most expensive going at £16 for such a small portion. (A side salad is £8!!) Our total bill came to over £50 with drinks and a side. The service is pretty good but with the competition locally increasing from the opening of the Dark Horse coffee shop and also a range of options on bishopthorpe road I am not sure we’d choose to visit for anything other than breakfast as there are better value options within a short walk with equally good and more...

We visited today after we heard so many good recommendations from friends and it did not disappoint! It is clean and beautifully decorated, I love how it has paid attention to it's heritage but is also modern and thoughtful. The staff were fantastic, the food was spectacular (a moment for the oysters and cauliflower cheese please) and the drinks were divine. Every time I saw a different order go past, I wanted it all! It was great to see it so busy and they looked after us a family really well, with generous portions of pasta and ice cream for the kids! Overall, what a treat! I wish this local business all the success in the world - as a fellow business owner I know it isn't easy, but these guys make it look and feel so and we look forward to coming back! Congratulations The Old...
