I went in for lunch recently and I never leave bad reviews but I couldn’t resist. As a bar supervisor myself, I was in absolute shock and awe over how this place was being run. Firstly, no host. Just some signs at the front saying 6 people max per table and to do the track n trace. The people in front of us ignored all that and just bolted in (of course) you can NOT trust that the customers are going to take the initiative to do the track and trace, OR seat them selves correctly. How can you control that groups aren’t entering and splitting tables? Which is still not allowed indoors. So we had to seat ourselves and luckily we have half a brain cell because I watched other customers sit down at dirty tables. I sat there and watched the wait staff ‘clean’ the tables. Absolutely VILE. No new menus. I watched her pick up the same menus that were left on the dirty tables, pathetically ‘wipe’ the tables (not cleaning any chairs) and put the same menus right back down. There was some sort of magazine on my table which I PEELED off, it was sticky as all hell. The bathrooms were vile. The app wasn’t working and not one person came over to us. I’m all for cheap food and a cheap pint but it’s not worth my safety. With covid cases on the rise in York right now, it is taking hospitality staff out every where and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing in spoons (I know, don’t expect much from a spoons). Vile. Also, reading through other reviews on google and trip advisor, the management don’t even reply to any of them. So they clearly don’t give a s*. Take some pride Spoons,...
Read moreAfter an epic drive north from Devon, I checked into the adjacent hotel (business trip). Feeling that I needed something more than a hotel room, I walked into The Postern Gate and was immediately presented with the most friendly and amiable lady, asking what I would like. "Guiness, please." No Guinness....boohoo "How about one of our ales?" "Alright, ummmm," This wonderful lady presented me with a sample of Hullaballoo, whilst telling me all about it. It was a really pleasant and welcoming exchange that I never experienced in Wetherspoons in Devon. Suffice to say I bought two.
I really liked the atmosphere, so I decided to order food at the table (Ramen, which was delicious). As I was eating, the same lady was doing the rounds of the tables, ensuring that they were cleaned up and ready for the next customer.
She approached me and said: "Because you liked that ale, I thought you would like this," and then handed me a Wetherspoons leaflet about all their ales. We had a really sociable exchange, and she carried on with her work.
I sat there relaxing and noticed that she took the time to talk to many customers whilst she worked. She was engaging and fun throughout.
This member of staff was, in my opinion, exceptional, and most certainly not what I as a consumer experience on a regular occurrence. I do work at a high level in innovative digital product management, and I rarely see the genuine interactive skills that I experience with this particular lady.
@JDWetherspoons, invest in this individual and others like her. If you do, you will see...
Read moreWent here with my son, last week and we had the fish and chips. We were going to go to the Waterfront Cafe, but this was nearer, so popped in on the off chance. We really fancied fish and chips, but wasn’t holding our breaths for anything amazing. Wow! Were we surprised! This was the best fish and chips, we have ever had! We thought it would be just something microwaved, from the box, but it wasn’t. I don’t really like cod, as it’s a wet fish, but this wasn’t at all. My uncle had a fish and chip shop, all of my youth, so we grew up on fish and chips.
The batter was homemade and perfect 👌🏻 Usually the batter is thick and soggy inside, this wasn’t at all. The batter was applied lightly and cooked to perfection! ❤️ There was no soggy undercooked batter, on the inside, with a dried up fish. Obviously, the chef had the right temperature when they put the fish in and left it in, the correct length of time. The fish tasted lovely, more like the consistency of a haddock, which for me was perfect 💯 Unfortunately, the chips were frozen, but expected - even the Ivy use frozen chips 😔
For £14.95 we got 2 fish, chips and mushy peas - with 2 pints of Pepsi. We would have paid close to £100 for the same at the Waterfront Cafe and tbh I don’t think could have been anymore perfect than it was. The fish was the better than any fish shop/restaurant I have ever been to!
Well done that chef! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I did send my compliments to them, on the...
