I’m currently on the second night of a three-night stay at Novotel York Centre, booked through my university. Unfortunately, this has been one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had. I arrived at 3:10 PM on 8 April, but the receptionist Sonan falsely told me that check-in only starts at 4:30 PM — despite the hotel’s website clearly stating check-in is from 3 PM. I was asked to wait and promised a follow-up, which never came. After waiting more than an hour, I went to the desk again and was told I was “interrupting other guests.” Sonan added, “What if others complain?” — a completely unwarranted and disrespectful remark that made me feel singled out and belittled. When I raised this with the duty manager (Emma), she refused to acknowledge the staff member’s inappropriate behaviour and only offered a vague apology “on behalf” of Sonan. I had witnessed Sonan interacting with other guests more politely and informatively. Whether this was racially motivated or simply unprofessional, it was completely unacceptable. The condition of the room was also deeply disappointing: visible hairs and stains in both the bathtub and the bed. I was told the hotel was fully booked, but that I’d either be moved or the room would be cleaned the next day. Neither happened. When I followed up again, I was assured the room would at least be cleaned — but when I returned, it was even dirtier than before. Still, no apology was given. Very rude. To make matters worse, the room is not soundproof at all — I could clearly hear noise from other rooms and hallway traffic. As someone on a tight schedule, this made it nearly impossible to rest properly. What should have been a recovery space became a source of even more stress and exhaustion. This stay has caused unnecessary distress and disrupted my work. Instead of support or basic hospitality, I’ve encountered neglect, disrespect, and a complete lack of accountability. This is unacceptable for any hotel — let alone one booked through a university. Don’t feel safe.

For a 4-star hotel, the service was not the best. As soon as we arrived, we were immediately told about all the extra paid options and how we could upgrade our room for a decent additional fee. Half of the staff were friendly, but some seemed uninterested in helping or even acknowledging us. We had a standard room, and it didn’t even include disposable slippers, let alone a bathrobe — in a 4-star hotel. When we asked about it, we were again told that we’d need to upgrade the room to get those amenities. As for the pool and sauna, I find 30 minutes to be quite a short amount of time — not enough to change, shower, and still enjoy the facilities. But what disturbed me even more were the other guests. A family swimming with us was openly spitting and blowing their noses in the pool, and there was mucus floating around. In the sauna, a man was casually shaving as if that were totally normal. I believe the staff should give guests clear guidelines on how to behave before allowing them into the pool area. Breakfast was tasty and had a wide selection. There were even options for people with allergies — for example, my mom is lactose intolerant, and they had vegan yogurt. But… I had scrambled eggs, and while eating, I noticed they were green inside. I don’t think that’s normal, and it really killed my appetite. The room itself was clean, and we didn’t hear any noise from the neighbors at night. Overall, it wasn’t bad, but the price-to-quality ratio is poor. Also, not all of the staff are courteous or attentive.

Sadly I can't say I'll be returning to this hotel. I stayed two nights over the course of a week so had two different rooms, both of which had horrible staining on the carpets and chairs. The cleanliness really left a lot to be desired. In both rooms the air conditioning didn't work so was uncomfortably warm. In one room the drains in the bathroom smelled horrible any time I used the tap so was hesitant to use the facilities at all. In both rooms there was mold on the bottom of the shower curtains. Check-in was also extremely slow even though I had done the pre-checkin procedure before hand. When I finally checked in the receptionist gave me the wrong room number so the card didn't open the door. This could have caused an uncomfortable situation had another guest been in the room I was attempting to open. I had to go back to reception where another staff member had to investigate before informing me of the correct room number. The hotel also charges £17 per night for use of a very basic car park. While this is advertised on their website I can't see how the price is justified. They certainly aren't using the money to improve the upkeep of the car park or the hotel rooms. Breakfast and a 30 minute pool session are are extra and not included in the price of the room. The bar area and restaurant are nice, if a little over priced, but the cleanliness and upkeep of the rooms are atrocious.

Overall our stay was very pleasant. We booked two rooms for a group of four. The rooms were nice enough, the only major downfall being the state of the carpets, they need a really good clean or replacing. Air-conditioning and shower hose weren’t working in one room, this didn’t impact on our stay, however I did inform reception so they were aware of the issue for the next guests. There was an immediate offer to send maintenance to fix these issues. The staff are very friendly from the reception team, restaurant servers to cleaners and maintenance workers. Security is good, with the need of a passcode to leave the parking area and also the need to have a room passkey card to access the lifts and stairs to the rooms. Breakfast choice was excellent, several juices to choose from, tea/coffee machine with a variety, full English style breakfast, continental, fresh bread, pastries, donuts with Nutella, fresh fruit, dried fruit, yogurt, seeds, cereals, jams, honey, toast, the list is endless! The pool area must be booked in advance and and you are allocated 25 minutes use. It’s a small area and to limit overcrowding only 12 people are permitted at one time. We booked for 7pm both nights and were lucky enough to be able to have longer than the usual 25 minutes. The receptionist explained that if no one had booked for the next period we were welcome to stay a bit longer. We had approximately 45 minutes both nights. The pool temperature is lovely and everything is new, clean and fresh. The swimwear spinner was a bonus - no need to hang soaking wet swimwear in the rooms. There’s a small sauna within the pool are too. The hotel is easy to find on the outskirts of the city but it’s just ten minutes walk to the centre along the river Foss. We had one meal on arrival, this was Sunday lunch and we all chose the lamb, it was very nice, the vegetables maybe could’ve been cooked longer to suit our taste. Surcharge was automatically added to the bill so be aware of this. We ordered room service on our last evening and there’s a £5 surcharge for delivery. Pizza and chips were just fine, the ploughman’s to share was a little odd - the pork pie was replaced with chicken goujons and the pâté wasn’t anything like I’ve had before. I get the impression this is minced up meat that is perhaps leftover from the breakfast buffet. I’m all for reducing waste but it shouldn't really be classed as pâté. The hotel decor is unique, very colourful and modern, although I couldn’t quite work out if the repetition/lounge area ceiling was being worked on or if this was the intended style of the place? The rooms have an 80s feel with the colour scheme of reds, greys and blacks and could do with a makeover. Several complimentary Tea/coffee and milk sachets are available in the room along with cans of still water in the fridge. We all found the beds to be very comfortable. Hot water at all times was a real bonus as there’s nothing worse than a lukewarm shower. Noise level within the hotel was low and we weren’t disrupted at all. The WIFI was incredibly fast at all times. Overall the stay was very pleasant and we would book to stay should we find ourselves...

We are frequent visitors to this hotel but on this occasion unfortunately the overall experience was extremely lacking and well below my expectations. On arrival the checkin process was long and protracted with the member of staff commenting that the systems were slow and WiFi not working properly - these things needs to be addressed to set a good impression from the outset||After a lot of messing around the expected amount to be paid was £30 more than it said on my app - again a lot of messing around and the problem was resolved but it shouldn't be like this||As we do visit a lot we have got used to a warm welcome and acknowledgment of being a frequent visitor - nothing on this occasion||We specifically needed rooms with a walk in shower and although we were aware that no accessible rooms were available we were assured in a phone call previously that the exec rooms did have walk in showers - this was not the case and again a lot of messing around to find a room that came close to our requirements||I felt the rooms that we were allocated were not the standard exec rooms that we have grown to appreciate, lots of elements were missing on arrival, complimentary bathroom essentials, coffee machine, dressing gown etc. When we mentioned this various parts were randomly||supplied across our three rooms but nothing was consistent or appeared to be provided willingly with any care and attention. An example of this was that we recieved a coffee machine missing the drip tray / cup holder and we found the missing parts in our daughters room across the hallway||We stay in a wide variety of rooms when visiting based on availability and cost but these rooms could not be described as exec level and offered no more facilities that the standard rooms.||||In my opinion something has changed recently for the worse at this hotel and we will have to see if this experience is a one off or the new normal in which case we will have to review our options as there are many excellent hotels in York to choose from||||We did have the pleasure of talking to Nadiia during our stay who is an excellent member of staff and remembered us from previous stays - she is an outstanding example of how your whole team should operate providing a quality and appreciated interaction...

I absolutely loved my stay at the Novotel York as a female solo traveller. I stayed 2 nights Wednesday- Friday and had a fantastic experience. Although check in is 3pm, I arrived at 1.15pm and was able to park my car and my room was ready and able to check-in early at no extra charge for the car park or room. Parking is £17 a night which is reasonable compared to the other car parks. What was also really great is that I was told that even after checking out, I could still use the car park until midnight. There was plenty of spaces and my car was safe. I was lucky enough to receive a free upgrade from the superior Queen room to a deluxe room which had the addition of nespresso coffee machine, 2 small bottles of mineral water, robes, extra space with a sofa instead of a chair, and finally the addition of a desk and chair. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and I liked the fact the toilet was to the side and away from the sink. There was Rituals Toiletries (refillable not individuals) which was a great to have such quality Toiletries. I liked the fact I could chrome cast my phone to the tv and watch streaming services netflix etc.|The bed and pillows were comfortable and I slept well. A good size window with lots of natural light and black out curtains. There's air conditioning and heating on a central panel which is easy to use. I even had a chance to use the sauna, on arrival you can book your 30 minute slot for each day you are staying. |Location wise this is great, close to town, 5 minutes walk to Clifford's tower and lot of other key attractions are only 10/15 mins walk away. A lot of the other hotels are a bit closer to the town by a matter of 5 minutes walking but its well worth staying at the novotel. In the room there was a guide to York magazine and map printed on A4 which was useful.|Also catching a uber from the hotel was so easy, I ordered the uber and genuinely 1 minute later it was at the reception. |The staff were friendly and helpful. The overall atmosphere was great and I felt comfortable staying there as a female solo traveller. I thoroughly recommend staying here for a...
