A Hidden Gem Found in The Priory Hotel, Cartmel! Tucked away in the quaint village of Cartmel is a little-known gem called The Monks Bistro, located within the Priory Hotel. After a brisk morning walk, we stumbled upon this unassuming spot, not quite sure what to expect given its unique setup as both a hotel, bar, and restaurant. Luckily for us, this delightful gem delivered far beyond our expectations. From the moment we entered, the staff's warm and welcoming nature instantly put us at ease. Despite visiting quite late in the day, they kindly informed us of the remaining menu options still available. We settled in with our drinks by the inviting real fire, which provided the perfect ambiance to thaw out after our chilly morning venture. Our order of homemade Steak and Ale pies arrived in no time, and the aromas alone transported me back to fond memories of hearty family meals. The quantity was generous, but even more impressive was the quality – the tender steak, flaky pastry, and rich ale gravy melded together in a culinary delight that had us craving more. Admittedly feeling quite satisfied, we couldn't resist the temptation to sample their homemade puddings. Sticky toffee pudding and Eton mess joined our table, and to our surprise, we managed to find room for these indulgent treats. The puddings were divine, providing a sweet and satisfying conclusion to our meal. What truly made our experience stand out was the exceptional value for the price. For under £50, we enjoyed two filling mains, two decadent puddings, and two drinks. It's clear that this family-run business pours its heart into providing top-notch quality at an affordable price. A must-visit for anyone seeking a warm, inviting atmosphere, delectable homemade fare, and outstanding value. It's apparent that this hardworking family establishment is dedicated to ensuring patrons leave feeling full and satisfied, we look forward to returning for another delightful meal soon.

Spontaneous couple of night break in single room. Lovely owner/staff. Can't do enough for you :-) luckily timed it for Cartmel show which was fabulous despite the weather. Plus got chatting to lovely guests from Dunfermline and Bolton. Beautiful breakfast at Priory Hotel with ample choices. Unfortunately missed evening meal due to bad timing. Booked room through hotel, do this as often have offers on, which I assumed I had paid as it took my card details, embarrassingly I was about to leave & got called back to pay..... just double check with owner lol. Yes I'd go again...... thankyou

We stayed at this charming little village on our way to Scotland and could not have picked a better day to do so. The hotel was perfect for us, clean tidy, welcoming and smack bang in the middle of town. Very approachable and helpful polite staff, and a good breakfast. The day we went there was a Morris dancing display in the town square and all were free to join in, that summed up this wonderful place, so naturally friendly! Lovely little independent shop and or course their famous Michelin restaurant which, unfortunately was fully booked when we traveled……

First of all I don’t ever write reviews for anything so for me to even put the effort here is something

We had spent the bank holiday weekend in other amazing hotels and with one night left our final hotel was here. I splurged out and paid £140 for the Executive Double En-Suite expecting an amazing relaxing stay however this was the latter. This is an awful lot of money for myself and should have been worth the treat.

Slap right in the centre of Cartmel square the location is amazing and as expected you park at the race course and have a short walk. The hotel with two picnic benches either side of the front door means passing loud drinkers and breathing in plenty of second hand smoke that isn’t pleasant. The hotel has their own outdoor bar area away from the hotel which was empty. Drinkers should strictly be there.

Stepping in you notice no reception desk and unsure where to go. To your right a loud bar and your left the dining area where you could see couples trying to have a quiet candlelit meal uncomfortable with the cackling coming from the bar.

Only off chance did a lady ask ‘can I help you’ to which checking in was a handover of a key and breakfast is at this time. Soon as we realised going up the first flight of stairs and room 1 being on the right meaning every person in the hotel would pass your room I knew it was bad.

The bedroom was nicely decorated and en-suite nice and modern and good shower / bath. The tap is too big for the sink meaning washing your hands involves touching the basin. After a long day out in the lakes my partner and I had a nice shower and tried to relax in bed and watch some TV

The bed sadly is very uncomfortable with wooden headboard digging into your back and only 1 pillow. You can feel the wooden slats underneath that turning over rocks the entire bed

Getting past 10.30 and sleepy you can’t help notice someone above you squeaking around in the bath and slamming of doors. The room next door a loud family up shouting and constant banging. Come 11 we turned the lights out expecting a rough night sleep to constantly hear down below you cackling women from the bar and every flush and hand dryer use of the downstairs toilet. Room 1 has a draft so the door will keep banging to sound like someone trying to get in. Propping our bag against the door fixed.

The slamming of doors, footsteps above and sound of pipes and downstairs toilets was too much to take. This hotel is made of cardboard you can hear everything. 11.30 or so sleepless and agitated we just made the call to cut our trip short and drive home

We packed our stuff headed downstairs again unsure where to go or who to speak to given no reception desk, to have someone behind the bar hand the key back too and briefly explain my problem. There wasn’t even an apology or solution it was just ‘the bar is closing soon and oh ok your leaving’

We drove home in the middle of the night for hours out of the lakes just wanting our bed and a peaceful sleep. This is something I’ve never done in my life leaving a hotel.

We’ve been to Cartmel many times and know the area. The other hotels we stayed didn’t suffer this problem. It’s more a pub with rooms upstairs decorated nicely but not at all justified for the price you pay let alone when you choose the higher room package to be above the bar and it’s toilets

I wish we’d had the top attic room I’m sure those guests sleep was much better. To the owners reading this review soundproofing and welcoming of guests is a must. First floor rooms need a cheaper rate given their positioning and stay in room 1 just for one night and see how well you sleep

Await your response for some financial...

We stayed here for one night, as we were booked in another place for food

The location is fantastic on the square, we parked in the racecourse carpark but there are some bays on the square and around the village

The rooms was beautiful, really good size and as in the pictures. The bathroom was also done to a high standard

We didn't eat here other than the breakfast which was excellent. We opted for eggs benedict but there was a full hot and cold menu as the buffet element is obviously out of action

We didn't spend loads of time with the staff but they were so warm friendly and attentive when we did

There was a full lunch and evening menu and bar service

I would say you need to remember these are rooms above a bar / restaurant obviously depending when you go to bed you will hear some noise. We were in the closest room and found no issues with it unlike some other reviews I had read

Would go back and happily reccomend this place, ...
