OUTSTANDING !!!!!! We didn't stay at the hotel, we only had something to eat as the wife and I were passing through. We were staying in Newby Bridge and had a drive out as we'd never been to Cartmel. You know when you're aimlessly walking round a town and you fear a row may be brewing if you don't eat soon and you're looking at menus on the door of places or stood outside like a tourist saying "What about this place ? Shall we eat in here ?" EAT IN HERE !!!!!!! I promise you the food is amazing !!!! Proper local, comfy, friendly, country pub. Check out the picture of my meal and see for yourself. As you can see it's pan seared chicken, fondant potato, stem broccoli and a bacon + mushroom sauce...... and I don't even like mushroom but it was all perfect. I was thinking of having the braised beef pie but when I asked the very polite young lady, it's a stew in a pot with a lid and not a plate pie with a top and a bottom, you know like they'd have in Wigan, but I'm sure it would have been amazing as well. Highly recommended and will absolutely call again. Thank you.

Nice place, very cosy, friendly staff. Popped in on the off chance as there isn’t much in the way of a website, online bookings or menu and we were pleasantly surprised! I had the steak, which according the the chef, doesn’t require a steak knife, so they don’t have any, at all. I disagree, as I had quite a fatty rib eye and I was just sawing it with a blunt dinner knife which was frustrating and steak, regardless of the cut should be served with a nice sharp blade, but with this aside, we had a great meal out and I would recommend it.

Stayed for a weekend, greeted with a warm welcome showed up to our room to which was stunning with a luxury four poster bed, plus lots of extra little special touches. Great atmosphere in the pub section with great entertainment which gave this quaint country pub lots of character. Very dog friendly with lots of strokes and treats for the pooch. A Great choice of food on the menu which was very tasty, plus the full English breakfast was to die for. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will surely be going back!!! 5*

On our recent visit to Cartmel we visited the kings arms for some food. They said they were accepting walk ins (didn’t tell us there was a wait or that they were busy due to a reservation of 20 people otherwise we would have found elsewhere) so me and my family went in for our lunch. We ordered our food and drinks as normal but our problems started when our food or I should say half our food arrived. We had ordered pizza, steak, a hummus board and 2 kids meals. The pizza and steak arrived and they were both okay. Our hummus board arrived about 15 minutes after the pizza and steak but to our surprise there was no hummus - it’s a bit surprising you could forget the hummus with the clue being in the name and all. We then waited 20 minutes for a pot of hummus despite asking many times having to chase it up. Furthermore we were still waiting on the 2 kids meals 20 minutes after the 3 other dishes arrived. We were later told that they had given the 2 kids meals to another table, we wouldn’t have mind this but the manageress (or owner I am not sure) attitude is what made this experience much worse. She spoke down to me and my family and there was little care f out customer service as she spoke negatively to us in front of the other customers. Me and my family decided it was best we get the bill and leave as we were not waiting for 2 kids meals and giving the manageress any more money from us as she was obnoxious and did not care. I advise you stay away from here at all costs as the food (pizza and steak) was just average and you can find much better tasting food elsewhere. It cost us £60 for just the board, pizza, steak and drinks. We later when to a Chinese with a lot more attentive staff and more...

Dropped in for lunch. Nice ambience and decor. Lovely pint of Windermere Pale Ale. Charging 8.95 for the kids set menu is a bit steep (chicken nuggets and the usual) though we didn't have it so can't comment in the quality. Either way, 8.95 would be wasted on our 3 year old who barely eats. The service, however, was terrible. 45 minutes for a couple of sandwiches and a bowl of chips. That was after waiting for 15 minutes for our order to be taken. The worst thing was the absolute 'I don't give a sxxt' approach of all but one of the waiters. The others are expert in avoiding eye contact and in their inability to apologise. One of the staff - youngish guy with beard - apologised for the slow service and did so sincerely and graciously. This stopped me from getting cross with them in the face of others who gave the impression of regarding customers as an necessary inconvenience. I asked for 10% off the bill at the end, more as a gesture from them than because it means anything financially. The manager reluctantly knocked this off the bill. I'd have been more impressed and happy to give back the 10% if he'd simply apologised that we had had to wait so long for a simple lunch. All staff need to realise that apologising isn't a slur in them personally, just a reasonable thing to do when service is simply not good enough. Most customers, including me, are completely understanding that things don't always go right. It's the bad grace and poor customer relations by almost all the staff that means I won't return. Perhaps they are simply worn down by the...

It was, admittedly, between Christmas and New Year when we visited and was very busy, but the basics just didn't seem to be there. We tried to order four meals, three weren't available with a further two unavailable. We then placed our revised orders and waited. And waited. Another table were expressing their long wait too. Nearly fifty minutes later our food finally arrived...

The sausage and mash was tasty with a rich gravy. The beef pie had a very tender filling, but it was so salty that I couldn't eat the whole dish (very unusual). The egg on the fishcake poached perfectly, but the fishcake itself was again very salty. The mixed seafood sensation was served with nowhere to put the mussel shells from the moules marinières and nothing to clean your fingers with afterwards (which is even offered in KFC).

When clearing glasses from the table the young lady prodded her fingers into all of our glasses, realised that some of them hadn't been finished so then just left them... Nice! We commented that the food had been salty, no apology was offered byt she did say she'd tell 'them'. We ordered some coffees which came, lukewarm. When we went to pay the bill there was a extra pint of beer on the bill and an extra coffee. These were removed, but again no apology.

This was a really disappointing experience, what appeared to be good food but some over salted and front of house staff with no polish (sparkle). The Kings Arms has a good reputation, I hope this was an off day after a busy...
