We went and as soon as we got through the door we had menus thrown in our faces. We did wish to eat, but presuming people are going to eat is rude. We then ordered at the bar. We waited and waited and drinks did not arrive. A meal came out to the table with one we had ordered. They had mixed up tables. My husband went up to see where the drinks were. They said well you walked off before I had chance to do them and I forgot. He hadn’t done them and they use to bring to tables so we assumed they were doing this. The table next to us got part of their order even though they had ordered before us. They then came about 10 minutes later with what we thought was the rest of our order saying sorry here it is, but in fact it was the rest of the meals for the table next to us who also had been waiting. Staff member apologised and asked my husband what his meal was. It came out about 15 minutes after they had clearly cooked it quickly from that point as the sausages were burnt, carrots hard, cabbage undercooked. My food was also overpriced and the guacamole on the nachos was clearly not fresh I had finished before my husbands had even come out. Will certainly not be eating here ever again. It’s a shame as it use to be a lovely meal, but has gone considerably downhill. They then had the cheek to ask the table next to us if everything was all good knowing the service for them was as bad. They then tried to feed the table again next to us thinking they were new people so clearly attention to service. At which point we just left as they didn’t even offer us anything as an apology and did not even...
Read moreWe’ve visited the Royal Oak a number of times over the years & have enjoyed the pub & its location , it’s a lovely oldie Worldie pub with lots of dark wood, low ceilings & slate floors. They have a very large outside pretty back garden overlooking the beck.
We recently visited on Cartmel race day. We’d pre-booked a table for dinner after the races. It was a very hot day, so on arrival we were lucky to find a table outside, we informed the staff we had arrived & were told we could only have food served inside?? So we reluctantly moved inside, (only 2 other tables inside were occupied & eating). Drinks were served in plastic glasses even though we were eating & had prebooked. We all spoke to the manager/senior member of staff before ordering to give our feedback about our disappointment at sitting inside & the plastic glasses. She was very dismissive to the point we thought her quite rude. She actually said ‘i’ll try & ensure the chef doesn’t spit in your food’ !!! we were so taken aback none of us answered.
On a positive note the food was good (plus, we think it was ‘minus’ spit…. result 👍).
Obviously NO tip was left even though the food was good (sorry Chef &...
Read moreRegularly enjoy Sunday lunch here. Highly recommend a visit to anyone in the Cartmel area. Great food, beautifully cooked meats, imaginative vegetables, best roast spuds for miles, gravy, and extra gravy available! As I'm a Lancashire Lass, I was born with gravy in my veins, so this is a very important and impressive feature of Royal Oak Sunday Lunch! Sit outside on a lovely day, cosy up inside on cold and/or rainy days, or there's the conservatory for the in-between weather! Service is always absolutely impeccable and noteworthy. I really appreciated the lovely person in charge who noticed my dad was disabled and unsteady on his feet and so just seated him at the closest table and just swapped the reservation signs around to save him walking further than absolutely necessary. Whether you want a leisurely, relaxed, tasty, and friendly Sunday lunch experience or a good night out with friends and tasty food and events mid week, give The Royal Oak a try. You won't regret it, or its warm Cumbrian welcome or, indeed, the lovely cheerful service of all their engaging and interesting international bar...
