After booking last minute for a quick stopover in Sheffield, I thought that the Premier Inn Sheffield Arena would be ideal for me. A short hop off the M1 and I was driving into an almost empty car park - plenty of spaces to offer, well lit (due to my late arrival it was dark)
I was greeted by a friendly receptionist, who sorted my room key, and within minutes of arriving I was walking into my room for the night. For some reason I was given a disabled room - no problem, but different to what I was expecting (must of been busy). It was also on the ground floor facing the road - again no problem due to the two layers of windows (which were open to keep the room cool) - These were swiftly closed due to the city noise outside, plunging the room into silence. After turning on the Air conditioning unit (yes air conditioning) the room was at a very comfortable temperature.
The room was very large, with a big television on the wall (strangely not angled towards the bed), but a standard Premier Inn room - all very purple! All very good! Nicely finished bathroom with a bath, soap dispenser and shower gel - no longer Imperial Leather - but a generic cheaper quality brand.
However!!! Why do Premier Inn feel that pushing two single beds together makes a Double or King Bed! They do not! It is the most uncomfortable bed that you could ask for! At night you basically have two dips with what feels like a mountain range down the middle where the two mattresses touch! It is extremely uncomfortable if you lie down the middle of the bed. And the bed was not the new mattresses that Premier Inn are rolling out across all their new rooms (although it seemed like it was a new hotel) Although very uncomfortable to start off with, I did get to sleep quite quickly because the room became so cool and was not hot, noisy or bright!
Still disappointing considering the Hilton up the road only cost £10 more per night and would have had a lovely bed! (Maybe that could be an alternative if the prices are sky high like I paid!) Would I stay here again - maybe. But not at the privilege of £84 which they charged me. For a sub £50 rate I would have accepted it.. Get your act together...
Read moreQuite disappointed with the quality of this hotel in Sheffield. I have booked it - to finally try the one next to the arena, as in the past I have stayed in the Dundee branch and I was content - however this one has nothing to do with it. They gave me a room right next to the elevator and stairs - on top of that there was quite loud noises that could be heard from the guests upstairs and I indicated since I arrived that it will be an issue for me. I was up that day from 4.30 o'clock and was really looking forward to a good night rest and a bath. I got none of that. The bath tub was non-existent as they said that as part of their refurbishment, now showers were placed in the rooms - mind you in Sheffield Centre (Angel Street) I stayed in their Premier Plus double and even in the more expensive rooms they no longer have bath tubs (neither a proper wardrobe). With regards to the noise, the receptionist said that the stairs and elevator should not be a problem and that he heard the noises from the guests above my room and that he spoke to them and that they indicated they'd go to sleep soon, otherwise a room for people would disabilities would be available. The noises didn't stop well until 00.45. I went to complain downstairs and the reception workers had changed, so had to explain the situation from scratch. They referred me to put a complaint in via the website.
Thought it would be useful to relate this - as this is one of the more expensive options in its range at times, but also in my case I found it disappointing in terms of the price/quality it provides. Also, please note I have made the booking more than a month in advance - this was not a last minute booking to be allocated a room next to the...

They do provide extra on the way up to the room should you need it. The rooms where clean, and fresh. We had the all you can eat breakfast, the food was actually a lot better than expected.
With a wide range of food available. They have apparently changed the pancakes to a low sugar more healthy option. My girlfriend was not so keen on them, so left them. As the plates where been cleared we was ask how everything was? So we said my girlfriend mentioned about the pancakes. The woman said that they tasted better if heated up, and the next day to ask her. The following day we went down and asked about the pancakes and the server said she would sort them out for us, just give her 5 minutes. Sure even 5 minutes later three hot pancakes appeared.
The tv in the room was reasonably new, and from a good brand. It had a good selection of freeview tv channels.
The room had two Windows inside of each other. This seemed odd at first but once shut they made the room so quiet. There was some black out curtains to, they are most needed being opposite Sheffield arena.
From the hotel the arena is a one minute walk, there is also a cinema complex with a bowling alley and many different restaurants. This is about a 5 minute walk.
You are also a five minute drive from Meadowhall...
