Just returned from a two night stay at the Walpole Bay Hotel Nothing bad to say whatsoever. The staff, despite being short in numbers at times because of covid pings are all very friendly and really nice people who couldn't do enough for you. A few new staff appeared today to cover, which was nice to see. The owner, who, having watched the tv show (The hotel Inspector) (both episodes) we knew we were in for a treat coming here. Jane is great, and never stops working or doing everything to make the guest the focal point of everything. She is a lovely lovely lady who never seems to NOT be on duty, it was a real pleasure to meet her. Right down to the flower baskets and table arrangements outside, despite the high winds. I still think "the nest" needs to be in the foyer, and not hidden away on the 2nd floor. Also a shout out to the ghost, who appeared through the hidden door of the bar, :) The lift is a thing of wonder, especially when someone forgets to close the outer door, (despite it being a point of note to be told when you book in) trust me, the stairs gets tiresome. Top tip, close both doors when you exit the lift, PLEASE. Breakfast, now that is a thing to be proud of, no expense spared when it came to quality of produce, especially the sausages. Praise to the chef/s, only stayed for two days, but the quality was the same for both, double thumbs up. Again, everything supplied throughout the hotel is not the cheap whole sale rubbish you would normally find in a hotel, but branded quality produce and products. Great location for us, as we are not into the seaside resort burger bar arcade areas, which isn't a snub, its just not for us. So to be where we were, and have the peace and night time quiet, but with the option of going into town via a quick 5 minute taxi ride was great. A few minutes to one beach, and maybe five to another by foot, just the thing we wanted. Overall, a great place to be based in, so much so, we are going back in a weeks or so to celebrate my Birthday. Sadly not in the same room, but hey ho, its still at this...
Read moreOh my god this place is a real hidden gem- close enough to Margate to stroll along the seafront to all the pubs, shops & galleries, but far enough from the centre to be a tranquil haven from the modern world.
The museum is incredible - there are items of social history everywhere. We particularly loved the typewriters & carpet cleaners, tucked away in what were once bathrooms & sculleries. It's truly magical, but without any airs & graces.
On arrival, we were upgraded to a four-poster suite with balcony, as it was our 23rd wedding anniversary - a lovely surprise! It was very comfortable, with period furniture in keeping with the surroundings. We had a cream tea in the elegant dining room, where staff were friendly & attentive, but not intrusive. The freshly baked scones were delicious!!
Breakfast this morning was a buffet affair and again, very tasty. The informal atmosphere was perfectly balanced - friendly but not too casual - and enhanced by Jane, the owner, chatting with each group of guests in turn about their stay and the hotel.
Finally, a word about the Napery - a collection of over 300 linen napkins from the hotel, which various guests have decorated with original designs over the years. These have been framed and now adorn the walls - everything from children's doodles to illustrators' artwork. They form a unique gallery depicting special memories of stays at the hotel.
