If you're headed to Chama for the train, the Chama Trails Motel is a good choice.
Located about a mile from the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, there is a great taco shop next door (Santy's), a gas station (Speedway), and a grocery store just across the street (Lowe's).
The owners clearly care about the property and it is well maintained. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The bathroom in the room I stayed in was slightly small but not so much that it was uncomfortable. Shower water pressure was great.
My only complaint about the motel was the front desk person on the day of my visit. When I came to the office there was a sign on the door that she was in the laundry room with a number to call. The number went unanswered. When she appeared a few minutes later she was clearly unhappy and was unfriendly during the entire checkin process. When I asked about dinner options nearby she was curt, dismissive and unhelpful. Maybe she was just having a bad day - but she reflects very poorly on the property.
If you do want food within walking distance, they have a food truck on site selling burgers and steaks (I didn't have a chance to try it) and Santy's Taco Shop nearby is very good.
Unfriendly front desk person aside, the motel is clean, well maintained and reasonably priced. And really, when you stay at a hotel a clean, comfortable room is all you...
Read moreWe were visiting Chama, from Dallas, solely to ride the Cumbres / Toltec train. We needed a place to stay and researched the hotels, motels, and Inns, in Chama. We picked this location and were So Very Happy we did! Very clean, and Santa Fe'ish to the area. Our host and hostess we're so very great, fun, and informative. We were placed on a room that I consider to be the best kept secret room. This Inn is in a very good spot, with a gas station and convenient store to the left, rustic restaurant/liquor store/bar across the street (restaurant good for lunch or dinner), and Fina's breakfast (very good eating!) to the right, all within a very short walking distance, which we did. Now for the best kept secret room-(12), because of the wrap around porch with benches facing the roadway. My wife and I sat on a bench late in the evening and sipped on our drink of choice, talked and watched the very few vehicles passing by, and enjoyed our evening without being disturbed. We will definitely tell whoever we talk with, about going there to ride the train, to stay here. Downtown and the depot was a very short jot down the...
Read moreWhat a great place to stay! I’m a little leery of old roadside motels based on my past experience with places that are rundown and not so clean and noisy.
There aren’t a lot of choice for lodging in Chama so after reading the reviews online we booked a room and our hopes were exceeded from the start. We got a confirmation text message telling us what room we would be staying in which was really nice so we could pull right up to the room rather than having to check in then relocate the car- not a big deal but this was kinda nice. Mentioned this service when checking in and they said they aren’t always able to do it but they try.
The room was nice! Very clean. Recently renovated with a totally new bathroom- new tub, sink, toilet and tile. The room was large and freshly painted and the bed was very comfortable. I was concerned about road traffic noise from the highway a hundred feet away but I didn’t hear a thing all night. The staff were super pleasant and helpful with dining recommendations. Would definitely stay here if I’m ever in...
