We spent 3 agonizing nights at this place in June. We were in town for a somber event that was hosted in one of Unique Suites conference rooms. Because of this we decided to stay on site. Upon arrival I was hopeful. The lobby is modern and has a lively bar/lounge and separated restaurant all in the main building, which is where the conference rooms are as well. The guest rooms are in 2 large block buildings separated from the main building, with the pool between. With all unit doors opening to the parking lots, this is a motel.||||The first thing I should mention is we travel with our 2 small dogs. Dogs are allowed at Unique Suites for an extra fee. However, you can only stay in a “standard room”. Our standard room was definitely not recently remodeled. Inside it was cold yet wet, a very disconcerting combination. The air conditioner was obviously not equipped to deal with the humid Illinois summer temperature. The furniture was uninspired and severely outdated. In a huge entertainment center across from the bed sat a tube television with a screen quality that was like a portal to the 90’s. I actually stayed at this place around 1995 (at that time it was called the Worthington Inn) and I swear to God, it was like walking into the past. The mattress was in truth pretty comfortable, but waking up wet was not. As an example, our towels that we hung out the night previous after our showers were actually WETTER the next morning. I’m sure this was not helped by the fact there is no fan or ventilation at all, including in the bathroom. This room literally made me depressed.||||The second day I considered talking to the front desk, but I didn’t. I figured that was just the standard of quality the motel extended to guests traveling with pets and assumed that any other room offered would be of a similar quality. Things did not improve, and I didn’t expect they would. I just wanted to attend our event and get out of there. That evening one of our dogs developed a raspy wheeze. I’m not sure if it was the damp polar conditions in our room or the ever present cigarette smoke that wafted constantly outside. The latter would prove impossible for us to get away from during our stay.||||With the final day came the realization that our ceiling was leaking. Not a lot, maybe a drop every 2 minutes. We actually wouldn’t have even noticed except it was dripping right into a shoe. This was the day of our event and we were helping to prepare for it, so we were busy and out of the room for the most part. Upon returning, the drip had increased substantially, and I headed for the front desk. The young man running the desk was very helpful and offered to move us to a different room. Apparently, the air conditioner in the room above ours had been left on and that was causing the leak. We took him up on his offer. Even though moving our belongings took away from the time we could spend with our family, I was hopeful of getting a better nights rest before our early departure. To be of further service, the clerk told us we could just leave the key cards in the new room when we left in the morning, it would be before someone was at the desk. This was good information as the next morning it was pouring rain.||||Our new room was on the second floor. It was apparent it was also a “standard room” as it had the same outdated furniture and tv but was actually smaller in size. The air quality was somewhat better, but I should mention my partner cleaned the air filter before the rest of us moved over. “It was not good” was all he said. As if right on cue, the moment we moved there was someone smoking right outside our room. It was sadly comical. ||||Eventually, we said our good-byes to friends and family and went to bed fairly early. For the first couple hours it was pretty quiet, and I rested. You could hear people walking past and talking, but that’s kind of to be expected on the upper level of a motel. The first car alarm went off shortly after midnight. It was loud and close. It caused me to literally jump out of bed in fear it was our car. It was not. By the time I got up at 5:30am that had happened 4 more times, with the same reaction in every instance. ||||But the highlight of the night (indeed the entire stay) came at around 2:30am. It had been stormy that night and I woke to the sound of what I thought was the wind pushing against the door. I went over to it, and could feel a very strong pushing coming from the other side. I pulled back the curtain slightly only to see the face of a man right there across from mine trying to get into our room. He didn’t even notice me. I can’t even describe my alarm and how disturbed I was by this. Without even thinking about what I was doing, I banged on the window and yelled something to the effect of “Get out of here” He yelled back “this is my room”. I replied “no it’s not, we are sleeping in here, GO AWAY”. And he did. Needless to say between that and the remaining car alarms I did not get much rest that final night. ||||We drove 12 hours following that and stopped at an Econolodge somewhere in South Dakota. I figured it couldn’t be any worse. It was significantly better. Thankfully, our dog’s health began improving about 24 hours after we departed Charleston. ||||In my opinion, this establishment has a serious identity problem. It almost gives off the impression that the Lobby/Restaurant/Lounge building is operated separately from the rooms. The main building is modern and vibrant, but the guest rooms make you want to curl up in ball and cry. The motel does have a couple “executive suites”, but way less than you would think considering the name Unique SUITES. Those are the units the website describes as having been recently remodeled. I know this because we had family staying in one of them. It actually seemed pretty nice, and even had a television that was made in this century. ||But we have dogs instead of children. I take personal...
Read moreI was celebrating my brother and his wife’s 10 year anniversary with friends and family. I spent 100 dollars at the restaurant and 100 dollars for a room only to be completely disrespected and embarrassed by the bartender and manager of the bar. My family and I were enjoying our night drinking with no plans of driving since we were all staying at the hotel. I had a couple drinks with dinner which was at 6 pm and then had 5 drinks at the bar in a period of 6 hours. My sister ordered shots which I wasn’t even going to partake in when the bartender told her I was cut off. I was still sipping on a beer that was half full with no intentions to order another one but that wasn’t the point. I asked the bartender why I was cut off because I was curious and embarrassed at this point. She told me it was because I was slurring my words. This was the first time I had even spoken to her so I had no idea what she was talking about. I thought maybe she had me confused with someone else but she just continued to tell me I was cut off which has never happened to me so like I said I was embarrassed. I asked to speak to the manager. The manager came at me completely unwilling to even hear me out and threatened to call the police on me. I’m just sticking up for myself at this point, I didn’t even want another drink! I told the manager to look at my bill so I could prove to her that I’ve only had 5 beers in a 6 hour period. She did print it out and it showed what I was trying to tell her but she was still rude and dismissive. I told her she had no backbone as a manager and walked back to my hotel room. My family and friends were still outside the bar so I was talking to them from my hotel room (that’s how close my room was) and then the police showed up. Not one police officer, but 9! They questioned my family and friends and then I decided to go down very calmly and talk to them about what happened. They told me the manager of the bar called them and told them a lady was cut off for passing out at the bar and then waking up demanding service in a threatening way. So, add filing a false police report to the story also. After talking to the police officer about what really happened, they left. They also encouraged me to call the manager of the hotel the next day to complain about how I was treated. I feel like if I was so drunk, to the point of being cut off, a police officer wouldn’t have believed my side of the story. I called to talk to the manager this morning and was told by the gm of the hotel that I would have to call back this afternoon. He was also rude. I have not called, I decided to do this instead. I will never spend money at this place ever again. Not to mention the 10 people that were with me won’t either. The dinner wasn’t great anyway so it’s not a huge loss. The drinks, food, and room were all overpriced. The door to my hotel room was stuck to the point we had to have help from the hotel staff to get it open. My sister’s hotel room door was the same way. The outlets didn’t work either. The hotel room shouldn’t have cost over 30 bucks a night. It’s more like a motel and yes, it’s unique alright, not...
Read moreIf you are traveling with a pet you don't want to stay here. Both my brother's family and my family booked executive suites for a one night stay in January 2019. A week before our stay I called and asked about their pet policy when my pet sitter cancelled. "No big deal its only $10 per night" I thought that is not bad at all! I call again the day before my stay to confirm my reservation and to remind them we are bringing a pet. They confirmed but informed me that since I had a pet I couldn't have the executive suite and they had changed my reservation to the standard room. I told them that was disappointing because I had three kids coming with me and I really needed the extra space. I was told the standard rooms hadn't been updated but were about the same size. Okay no big deal...space and bed are the most important things. The entire standard room we were given would have fit in the kitchen and living room of the executive suite my brother had. If you bring a pet you are banished to the far side of the hotel away from all the other guests in a standard room where two people can not walk past each other at the same time. The room had not been bothered by the renovation staff in at least 25 years so when they say it has not been renovated they absolutely mean it. Carpets torn up and stained, bathroom so small you couldn't even open the door all the way without hitting the tub and then you had to stand behind the toilet to close it, the toilet was so loose on the floor it rocked back and forth when you pushed it and then also only flushed about every third time you pushed down the lever, all the fixtures (light and water) were rusted badly, the tile in the bathroom was had stains/spills on them, the AC/heater worked but not well (had it set on 62 degrees and it was so hot we had to open the door for awhile), there are only a couple outlets in the room and two of ours were not working, it is on the ground level with the door opening to the outside and the blinds did not even completely cover the windows.....I could go on. Believe it or not my wife and I are not really picky about hotel rooms but this room was rough. In all fairness I need to also say that the staff were very nice, the lobby/bar/restaurant were all great, and if you have a suite it was a very nice room especially for the price! Its just a shame that even though they "allow" pets they technically don't "allow" pets so if you have to stay here: (1) leave Fido at home; or (2) lie and let them know at check out so you can pay them the fee. Otherwise you will be handed a scarlet letter "P" for pet owner at check in and banished to steerage on the dark side of...
