As an former longtime resident of Chincoteague now living a half an hr south in Onancock Va and Eastern Shore of Va local.. I can without a doubt say this is the best hotel on the Island and If I could rate it higher than five stars I would.. Not just because of the beautifully appointed rooms and breathtaking view of Assateague and the Lighthouse.. Also right next to the brand new Chincoteague Museum.. That is next to a wonderful restaurant The Chincoteague Diner and across from the Chincoteague McDonald's that in the summer a visit too includes w Pony Pettings on site and a great outdoor pool area and just a great overall Chincoteague Island experience for everyone.. The staff and crew represent the embodiment of what life on The Tump is all about.. As they are among the best most caring ones I be ever encountered anywhere I ve ever stayed in my life.. If I did nt already have great feelings for the old Driftwood Inn.. After our recent passing of my youngest sister who lived on the Island w her husband and four children and I recommended all of my out of town family stay here for her funeral service.. After checking out they concurred w my choice and were blown away by the absolutely wonderful treatment and sensitivity the staff provided us all thru our devasting time.. But the special touches was the thing that forever more endear the Best Western not only to myself but my sisters.. Checking into our rooms we each found a sympathy card addressed specifically to each sister.. One which the entire staff had all individually signed and left lil messages of condolences.. Which blew us away.. And all the lil things they did for us in between culminating w arriving back after an exhausting day after our baby sisters funeral.. To individually wrapped for each of us super delicious Oreo Truffle chocolates handmade by Sandy.. And the great service from Beth making reservations.. Desmond upon checking out.. Gary on midnight shift when I could nt sleep and needed a soda and the great talk and realizing all the esva peeps we had in common.. Anna(?) and the wonderful food service the next morning which is complimentary and was super delicious w cheese omelets.. Oatmeal.. Waffles.. Sausage and discount gravy etc btw.. To Kedrick who I ve known forever and his son and my sister Kathy who passed away oldest son Justin are very good friends and in fact went to the movies while we were there and is related to the preacher at my sisters memorial service.. Could nt be appreciated anymore and touched our hearts and we are so grateful.. To say you all went out of your way to make things as comfortable as possible for us.. Is an under statement.. And i hope to stop by soon or chat w the Chesson family owners soon.. To not only express our family's complete appreciation and thanks.. But to compliment them on the way they obviously practice what they preach when it comes to managing a long time Island hotel in todays modern world.. That still instills the old school friendly hospitality always present unique spirit of being treated to a lil slice of heaven if you were lucky enough to live there and...
Read moreEditing my one star review after thinking about it and adding a second star because everyone on the staff was very nice. Here's the story. My husband and I decided to go to Chincoteague over Easter weekend late the week before and our regular hotel was booked. I was ready to postpone our trip, but he talked me into the Best Western instead -- he figured it was probably okay because it cost nearly as much a night as our preferred hotel (nearly $200 a night).
When we walked into our room it smelled very perfumey -- we thought it might have been the cleaning products. We both nearly slipped on the vinyl floor just as we entered the room. Even though it was breezy we opened the doors to the room to get the smell out. (later in the stay we realized that someone had probably squeezed lotion on the floor and the cleaning staff didn't realize it or could not get it up -- we think this might have been what happened because the lotion was the exact same smell as the air in the room)
Sleeping was okay, but since we were on the ground floor we heard the guests above us walking around. At one point it seemed like someone was doing exercises, or walking back and forth for 30 minutes or so. When they used their toilet, the wall near our bathroom made a loud ticking noise.
The coffee in the room was undrinkable and the coffee for breakfast was not much better. The only regular black tea available was either decaf or a brand I'd never heard of. There were several options for breakfast, not much different from our preferred hotel -- so that's a plus.
Our hot water was not working when we went to shower, and when it was fixed, later in the morning (and the next morning) the temperature fluctuated from hot to warm to cold in the few minutes I was in the shower.
As I mentioned earlier, the staff was friendly and helpful. When I called the front desk about the hot water the first morning the phone never had a dial tone -- just dead air and static -- and pressing 0 seemed to do nothing. I went to the front desk and told the woman there that we had no hot water, that the floor was dangerously slippery and that our phone was not working. She was apologetic about the hot water and said it would be fixed, expressed surprise about the floor and phone and said it would be taken care of.
Later that day when we got back to the room the floor was still slippery and the phone was the same. Someone then came by and tried the phone, telling me it was fine -- that the dead air and static were from my cell phone next to the phone. She also said that someone would come by and scrub the floor.
The floor seemed a little better, but still slippery, when we got back from dinner. At some point we got a phone call telling us that we had a 25% off coupon for our next stay waiting for us at the desk.
I would have preferred money off that stay because we don't plan on going back to the Best Western on Chincoteague. I am glad other people have had a different experience. It is close to the refuge, so...
Read moreI really wanted to say how very much we enjoyed this place-it always gets good reviews and we booked for the first time coming here based on the google reviews. loving the location! we could hop on the causeway and go over to the park for the sunset. And we could see a little silver of the coast from the balcony - we had with our king room. The rooms were slightly bigger than normal, which made it really airy. Everything was clean and simple. There was chairs and a table, a sofa, and a balcony to enjoy the sunset and the sunrise and the bird calls. We could park out back on an old style gravel parking lot which, for some reason was very comforting to have things the way they used to be. across from the back parking lot is a little park with a barbecue, where you could have a picnic and a neighbor house with a wind chime that greeted evening with delight. all the details were great. It was very sweet to have a bath room with a sink in with a toilet and a second sink right across from the big refrigerator - very handy! there were two luggage racks, quite an unusual and wonderful thing and ice machine that did not make noise all night and keep you awake and a little workout room and stairs if you wanted. All kinds of little old fashion details that I wanted to mention. The only thing missing for me was real milk for my coffee. Pretty small detail. It was great. We will...
