I was fortunate enough to get a room for 3 only because there was a cancellation. This is not your typical “bed and breakfast,” this is the place that is every man’s dream. it is decorated completely in railroad so if you’re looking for a fancy romantic getaway with flowers and candles you should probably keep looking. Now with that said, my wife was with me and fell in love with the place. She loved how everyone welcomed us and she said that her favorite part of the trip was hanging out on the porch with the other guests. If you’re looking for a great place to see trains, a place to make new friends with other guests who also have an interest in trains, and an inn keeper who will treat you like family, The Station Inn is definitely the place for you!
The inn is historic in its existence and well known throughout the rail fan community. There are 3 mainline tracks directly across the street so you can watch and take pictures without leaving the front porch. The porch is definitely the highlight of the inn as most of the guests gather there to enjoy the trains and conversations.
We stayed in the Erie room, (all the rooms are named after railroads) it’s the one room that doesn’t have a track view, it has a queen bed, 2 twin beds, and a private bathroom. The room was very clean and even though there isn’t any air conditioning in the rooms, it was still comfortable enough to sleep with the fans running on a warm August night. The only negative about the inn would be that the toilets seem very small and low to the ground. The shower was equally as small in our room BUT I am 6”2’ so that might play into it as well, LOL.
Overall, this place is GREAT! It is a place that transforms you back to a time when life was simpler and worry free. Pat is super nice and very welcoming, Sid is Pat’s dog and is considered the official greeter for arriving guests, once you meet him you’ll have a new best friend. The breakfast was great and offered several different options such as fresh fruit and pastries. We stayed there for 3 days and left having new friends. The inn is located within a few miles Horseshoe Curve and the Galittzen Tunnels. It is also within walking distance to a few local restaurants and bars. Parking is located across the street from the inn.
I would definitely recommend this place if you’re searching for a great place to see trains in the Allegheny Mountains and experience small town atmosphere. Our room is already booked...
Read moreTRAIN WATCHING HEAVEN! You're not coming to The Station Inn for a Four Seasons experience...you're coming because you're a train nut! I selected the B&O suite because it has a queen size bed (along with two twin beds) and a view out of the front of the inn towards the tracks. Be forewarned, this is a rustic mid-1800s area inn with no air conditioning, so for those who can't sleep with the windows open and a box fan in the heat of the summer I suggest the spring or fall for good sleeping weather. The front porch is fantastic...great viewing location, radio 'squawk' box with the Allegheny dispatch frequency, and even a spot light that shines across to highlight the passing trains at night. There are several eateries in the immediate vicinity, including Vito's pizza place, affectionately known as 'CP Vitos' by the train crews. Speaking of trains, the action is almost non-stop. In the age of 'Precision Scheduled Railroading,' I observed trains over 10,000' long...2 lead locomotives, an entire train, 2 mid helpers, MORE train, and 4 helpers on the rear. Quite a sight to see...all from the porch. I grabbed a pizza from Vitos and enjoyed it with fellow rail fans on the porch, retired to my room and read through some of the numerous Trains magazines and books, and fell asleep to the deep bass rumble of Norfolk Southern diesels passing by. Breakfast was served at 0815 sharp, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee, ham and French toast was on the menu. Very yummy and a great way to start off the day. Spent the rest of the morning railfanning and then checked out right before 1100 to head over to Gallitzin, Horseshoe Curve, and Altoona. I can't recommend The Station Inn highly enough...if you're a true train nut, experiencing the inn at least once is a...
Read moreI stayed at the Station Inn recently just after the new owners took over the establishment. My stay was excellent and I highly recommend this place.
First and foremost, this is a place for rail fans young and old. Trains are rumbling by just yards from the front porch and inn 24/7, which I was expecting and was not disappointed. You can spend the whole day doing this but there are also plenty of other rail related activities in the surrounding area which makes this place a prime home base for your rail activities.
All of these activities are easily found on line or the friendly inn keepers and staff can direct you in the right direction. The world famous horseshoe curve is the most well know attraction which is close by to the inn.
The breakfasts were hearty, plentiful and delicious. Plan on good conversations w the other guests.
Some rooms face the tracks so it’s trains 24/7, again, which I went for but if you don’t want that ask for a room not trackside, it’s probably quieter. I however enjoyed the late and early trains, watching bedside w one eye open and then falling back asleep.
There are some great restaurants close walking distance from the inn. Definitely recommend this place for kids and I would expect to have kids as guests during weekends and over school holidays.
If you enjoy train watching in a friendly, comfortable environment w a front row seat then this...
