My husband and I were driving to Montana after exploring Arizona and literally cruised into Ely on fumes. We were tired and looking forward to sleeping comfortably after having been camping and hiking. I did not want to relive the most awful experience at a Howard Johnson Hotel in Tuscon over a week earlier, so I was a bit uncomfortable that the Great Basin Inn was located on what appeared to be a rather shady area and the office itself was located across the parking lot and connected to a liquor store. That is the only negative. I wasn't so sure the room would be ok but was too tired to ask to look and didn't want to drive around searching for another one. I was very pleasantly surprised with the room. It was clean and the owners put some effort into adding a little charm to what could have been just a regular boring room. The bed was very comfortable, the bedding was colorful and not standard hotel looking. the room was spacious, we don't care about television but there was one. There was a cute little end table with coffee pot and microwave unlike any of the other places we stayed. There was also a little fridge in a charming armoire. Of course it's nothing fancy but we aren't into fancy as much as comfortable and charming-which it was. Also had free wifi. If our travels take us back we will...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I ended up in Ely unexpectedly and without any motel reservation. We checked every motel in town, and the Great Basin Inn was the only one with any rooms available. I was a bit leery because there were several men in the parking lot who seemed to be having too good of a time. We ended up with room 100 way in the back. But we were pleasantly surprised with the room. There were 2 queen beds, but one was in a separate room in the back. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and the shower did not disappoint. There was a older big-screen TV. I don't know what all channels were available because once we found ESPN, we just left it there.||||This is definitely a unique, older motel that is quite dated. However, the room was quite adequate for one night's stay, and the lady who took care of my reservation also gave me some helpful suggestions about how to deal with my boyfriend's illness. I don't know that I would necessarily book a reservation to stay here again, but it served it's purpose when we needed a room at the...
Read moreMessiest check in I've ever had. The woman, one of the owners I presume, went to the back with my passport and credit card and took forever to come out again. It later turned out she booked us for one night (while we made reservations for two in advance) as well as doing some random calculations with "tax", so we ended up with a higher rate per night. After some complaining from our side she proceeded to book us an extra night for the original rate per night we booked it for, but still added a random tax percentage, all while switching to help customers at the liquor store in between. She then gave us the keys to our room and a bucket of ice. Just what we needed... Overall it looks like a worn out motel, run by a variety of unorganized, but nice (I admit) people. I wouldn't recommend staying here, there are plenty more motels in Ely that seem like better and more professionally organized...
