Our recent stay at Motel 6 in Ely, NV was an absolute nightmare, and I feel compelled to share our experience to warn others. We stayed from August 16 to 18 (2024), and the conditions were not only unsanitary but also unsafe. Here are the key issues we encountered (in my husband's words):
Filthy and Sub-standard Room: Upon arrival, our room was in a shocking state. There was vomit on the refrigerator (which was not working), dried bodily fluids (use your imagination) on various surfaces, and a filthy shower with an unclean curtain. It was clear that the room had not been properly cleaned or maintained.
Unsafe and Hazardous Grounds: The motel grounds were littered with broken glass, bottle caps, and construction materials, which created dangerous tripping hazards. The pool was closed (something not disclosed on the website when we booked), left unsecured and unlocked, and was also filthy—posing multiple safety hazards.
Hostile Environment Created by Migrant Workers: The majority of the rooms were occupied by migrant workers (multiple white vans labeled "migrant farm workers" clued us in), who unfortunately through their actions/behaviors (and management's disregard for security enforcement) created a hostile and unsafe environment. On multiple occasions, they threw bottle caps at us and refused to move on the staircases, blocking our passage. A staff member confided that these workers had become combative with him earlier in the weekend, and a fight almost ensued. Due to this situation, my family, including my young son and wife, felt unsafe and were unable to leave the room alone. Instead of ensuring a safe environment for their customers, Motel 6 Ely, NV insisted that we should have policed their premises for them. This is unacceptable and highlights their complete disregard for guest safety.
Staff Incompetence and Unsafe Practices: On Saturday, we were unable to access our room for several hours because our keycard stopped working. The staff member on duty was untrained and unable to resolve the issue. Our dogs were stuck inside the room, and the only solution was to have the staff member manually open the door for us—an unsafe and unacceptable situation. Additionally, a member of the staff confided in us that she had been injured due to hazardous conditions in the office during ongoing construction, such as tripping hazards and uneven flooring. It should be noted that all of the junior staff members seemed to be hardworking and friendly, yet untrained.
Unprofessional and Rude Management: On Tuesday, August 20th, I received a call from Maria at the Motel 6 in Ely, NV--who I did not see the entire time of our stay. She was rude, unprofessional, and dismissive, insisting that I should have handled all these issues myself. She exclaimed that she was in the office all day Saturday and I should have talked to her directly (if this was the case why was I unable to get a new key lol). She refused to take responsibility or offer any resolution. I had reported these problems to both the manager on duty (Keyan--apologize for misspelling) and other staff members during our stay, but no action was taken. Aside from replacing the broken refrigerator with a grimy, barely functional refrigerator--that I had to clean and install myself.
Corporate's Failure to Stand by Their Brand: After filing a complaint with Motel 6 Corporate, I was shocked to learn that they refused to remedy the problem or stand by their brand. Instead, they insisted that all matters must be resolved through the franchised property itself, even after I informed them that the franchise was combative, unprofessional, and rude when I spoke with them (Maria and Keyan).
In conclusion, our stay at Motel 6 in Ely, NV was one of the worst experiences we’ve ever had. The combination of filthy conditions, unsafe premises, hostile environment, and unprofessional management made it a nightmare. I strongly urge anyone considering staying at this location to reconsider. Motel 6 Corporate's refusal to take responsibility only adds to the...

Read moreIt is a place where you can get a decently-priced room last-minute. The bed isn’t too hard nor too soft, but the entire place looks poorly maintained.
The bathroom light needs a moment to warm up before it’ll turn on, and the water pressure is non-existent. I opted to skip a shower, since I have very, very long hair. Low water pressure would have made the process exhausting trying to get the soap out. On the same note as the shower, no shampoo or conditioner was offered - just a small bar of soap. There is no bathtub. The light switch by the door turns on the light in the closet, which I found interesting. Lights in the main room all have their own switches beneath them. The nightstands each had 2 normal plugs, a USB port, and a USB-C port, which I found pretty handy. Unfortunately, the normal plugs had those weird built-in covers, so plugging things in required some wiggling and maneuvering. There is an installation on the ceiling that looks like it may have been a light fixture at one point but is now simply a fixture with a hole into the ceiling. Not sure what purpose it serves. The wrap-around parking makes it easy to park near your room.
Outside the hotel, there are obvious areas where the walkways are in need of repair or replacement - this included walkways on the second floor. At one point, I stepped out of my room and was worried the entire second-story walkway might just crumble away.
In the courtyard beside the pool, there are 2 tree stumps from what appears to be recently-removed trees. The pool itself appeared to be under some kind of maintenance, which we were not informed of on check-in. It’s a good thing we didn’t pick this place for its amenities.
The TV is decent, though the “extended cable” package leaves much to be desired. At one point we were watching one channel, and it suddenly disconnected. We switched to a different channel, and that one worked fine. It’s a great selection if you want to watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on repeat for a few hours, as the FOOD channel only offered the same 6 episodes.
Service was great. Keythan was very helpful, even if he ended up having to ask a manager for the password to the key maker. The keys themselves are obviously recycled, as they are scuffed and scratched from numerous uses. The vending machines in the lobby are cash only, which was shocking considering most now also take card.
The few other patrons I interacted with were… interesting. There was a man outside smoking marijuana (to each their own), a woman standing by the stairs staring at the parking lot for a good while, and an older couple that were quite rude. The man was sitting on the stairs taking up most of the space, and it got even harder to get around them when his wife decided to go stand in front of him and block the entrance.
If you just need a bed, this place is decent. However, I for one will be paying the extra $20-$30 to stay at the Ramada or even La Quinta next time...
