The hotel itself is very lovely. The rooms are decorated quite nicely. However they are small and in my opinion not adequate for more than a nite or two as they have no drawers, only a small space to hang your clothes. We stayed 4 nites and it was a challenge having a place for our luggage. The nite tables are just a small shelf, so not space for storage. The room also comes with a micro fridge. The bathroom is equipped with wonderful liquid soap, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner, however when you are on the shorter side, reaching the top container is extremely challenging.
The worst part of our stay here, the location. Gastonia is attempting to revitalize their downtown. However, allowing a bar that stays open till 2am with music so loud we could feel the vibrations and people hollering and behaving like no one else is around is a HUGE problem. Once the bar closes, it's at least an hour before the patrons leave on their motorcycles. Then you get to listen to that until 3am. So we were lucky to get 4 hours of sleep each nite. We spoke to thr manager, a very nice lady who explained that they had been trying to get something done about the noise to no avail. Well I guess the Mayor and City council really do not want the revitalization of downtown. Because I know that we will not be staying here again as long as the bar is allowed to stay open till 2 am and I have to worry about my personal safety and damage to my vehicle. I am sure most potential patrons will have the same issue. It is sad, because even though there are a few challenges that the hotel needs to address, the main issue is the rucas that occurs nightly next door.
So patrons,...
Read moreNice decor, and well kept. Hostesses were all very polite and sweet. Less than modern TV in the room; for such an elegant place (and price) i would've liked to have seen a roku or smart TV of some sort. The room door had a hard time closing after opening with the key initially. It would stick just before closing and go no further. I almost walked out of the room with the door seemingly shut but barely open. I mentioned it to the hostess. The housekeeper didn't knock before entering the room at around 11am (checkout is 12pm), which I thought was customary at every establishment (I could be wrong, however it was slightly alarming regardless). There is only one entrance/exit to the hotel. Parking was confusing, but after asking the hostess Zeta she said to park in a 'pay to park spot' and we wouldnt be charged. There werent many of said types of parking spots close to the building. Also, there was some event going on in downtown during our stay that wasn't mentioned by the hotel, that resulted in my party nearly being blocked in the parking lot with both ends of the street blocked by cop cars. Thankfully I was able to locate and staff member of the event who let me out of the parking lot. They were surprised nothing had been mentioned to me prior. There was a wedding rehearsal dinner happening downstairs in the lobby the night of our stay, and the music was very loud even through the sound proofing of the walls and shut windows. The loud noise lasted until after i fell asleep at 11pm. I wish i would've enjoyed a more peaceful night for a $214 one night stay....
Read moreA wonderful addition to downtown Gastonia! Our recent stay at The Esquire was delightful. These days, where hotel chains are commonplace and as unimaginative as big box stores, The Esquire takes one back to the days long past where a stay is a genuine experience. The owners have done a beautiful job at preserving the integrity of the building’s former character and grandeur, from the gorgeous woodwork to the beautifully restored mosaic floors. The rooms are smaller as is typical of historic hotels, but the owners have been clever with design and it was more than sufficient for us. Possibly the part I enjoyed most was the excellent restaurant, Barrister’s, on the main level with its old world ambiance and the beautiful, well stocked bar. We had a most wonderful meal and the chef was more than accommodating for preparing a vegan meal. There’s a large and beautiful, gated patio that looks perfect for a cool summer evening’s glass of wine or dinner. And much to our surprise, breakfast was included in “The Notary” coffee shop on the lower level. You walk down a very unassuming flight of stairs only to be greeted by a large coffee shop warmed by brick walls and wood floors. The menu was extensive and our Avocado Toast on thick sourdough was world class...and possibly the best oat milk latte ever! What a wonderful experience and great value for money. We’ll most...
