Where to go on Saturday evening that's local and a great setting....let's try Viva Tequis Taqueria and Cantina downtown Gastonia. There's already good reviews, so I'll give it a shot. Parking anywhere downtown even in a small town on the weekends can be awful, so I always go about 430ish. They have plenty of parking in the back, but there's an outdoor concert and construction today, so parking was a bit more of a walk. If you park in the rear, you'll walk up the steps of the patio, then into the restaurant. Go to the front to be seated with a hostess. This place is mostly an al a carte type of menu, and yes, you will pay for chips and salsa. I recommend trying 1 or 2 of their guacamole! I had the Kiss your Mama with corn tortillas, and it was perfect. I ordered a black margarita, and I wasn't disappointed, so round 2 happened as well. They have a very wide selection of dishes, but I went with 4 different street tacos. Lengua, Barbacoa, Tinga de Pollo, and Camaròn. All 4 were excellent. Yes, beef tongue tacos are delicious! Decent Mexican food is hard to come by in the south, so I'll be back here to try a few more. I hear the flan was great too. This place is..... Maloy Approved.

Gastonia is three for three! So many good restaurants in a tiny town! The Good: I wasn’t hungry and really wanted to try the birria tacos but I ordered one Chorizo street taco and a side of plantains. I really loved both! The taco was obviously authentic with its homemade, fluffy corn tortilla, wonderfully seasoned chorizo, and topped with cilantro and onion. Our waitress was VERY sweet and attentive and brought our desired salsas from the salsa bar. I asked for their spiciest, which was a habañero salsa, and it was really tasty but could’ve been spicier hehe. Their chips and salsa weren’t free but were really good! The Meh: our table and bench seating area was partially clean with the portion closest to the wall still with old food debris. Didn’t love it but at least their sanitation score is high and hopefully accurately reflects how food is handled haha. My friend ordered a shrimp bowl that was drowned in cheese. She liked the flavors but we all agreed there was an overload of queso…almost looked like Mac and cheese. The Bad: nada - if you’re looking for tasty, authentic Mexican, you should go here!

A restaurant with true and an authentic taste. I have been coming to Viva Tequis for over two years. I have not been disappointed. The tacos, quesadillas, and bowls have such a nice and unique taste. While eating tacos, depending on what you get. The chorizo is nice and sweet with a deep savory flavor. The carnitas made with passion with a nice pork and salt flavor. On the other hand, the quesadillas have a wonderful flavor, especially the chicken. The cheese and chicken go very well together. Finally, the bowls, if hungry, you will be greatly satisfied. Bowls that have good meat with fattening food that surely will make you full.

Although not mention in the thesis, I would like to mention the salsas. They have six salsas to choose from piña, r. tomatillo, tomatillo, habanero, jalapeño, and pickled onions and habanero. Each having unique taste. Starting with the piña, the piña salsa has a sweetness and maintains a nice kick of pepper that properly transitions the sweet to the spicy. Next, red tomatillo, I nice and spicy salsa with a smooth flow and tad bit acidic. On the other hand, tomatillo, which is green, has a soft and sweet and mellow taste which combines both savory from the Cilantro and tomatillo creating a very sweet dynamic flavor. Habanero and the pickled red onions and the original habanero are both great flavors of habanero which give the proper kick to your food. Finally, jalapeño salsa is spicy but has nice flowing flavor like the red tomatillo. All in all, the salsas give a nice addition to any food.

I give this place a solid...

Im a foodie and I like trying new places. I went to have lunch here and Ordered 1 burritto with Chips and Salsa and a Corona. The Bill was over $20 for lunch. I found that eveything was ala-carte. The Burritto didn't come with anything so the chips and salsa were extra.

Its not about money for me, but value. I wasnt about to eat a $20 lunch just for me. So I told them to scratch the chips and salsa. I could have gotten a large pizza pie and my beer for that price down the street.

The burrito was also very small. They ended up giving me a side of chips on the house anyway after i changed my order and told them why, which was nice of them.

For this price however, any Mexican Restaurant ive been to gives you chips and salsa free, and if you order a burrito you also get some rice and beans or something on the side.

In a burritto place like Neo Burrito or other places simular to that, their burritos are MASSIVE and a whole meal in themselves which compensates for the cost, about $8.

Needless to say, I left there still hungry.

The place was nice and clean and service and food was good. But for the value, I got about 1/2 of what I could get someplace else with the same quality for the same cost or less.

Though the service and food tasted good. People also look for value. Especially during lunch time.

Nice people and nice place, but very small portions and not a value for me. Maybe others dont mind, but I try not to eat...

Great place in downtownmlm Gastonia. I am a Texan visiting family in Charlotte for Christmas, and enjoying the antiques shops in the area. There were three of us, and we ordered queso and guacamole, and several kinds of tacos at the counter. We had prompt and friendly service there. They have Mexican Coke in the bottle and a mini Coke Freestyle machine, and even horchata. The queso and guacamole came out first, with generous portions of chips with each, and were very tasty. There were three salsas in squirt bottles on the table: mild green, hotter red, and very spicy darker green salsa. All were judged excellent by the group. The tacos came out next since they were freshly made to order, on warm and tender corn tortillas, with chopped onions and cilantro. We had shrimp (grilled), chicken (grilled), carne asada (grilled steak), carnitas (braised, pulled pork), and al pastor (marinated, grilled pork). Some of the tacos came with a slice of radish, others came with a lime wedge. We really enjoyed the tacos-the meat was tender and flavorful, and the tortillas were good, and survived to the last bite of each taco. My sister and her husband said they will come back out from Charlotte to eat here soon, and will recommend this place to their...
