Webb Custom Kitchen in Gastonia for Dinner.
I’d been before for lunch with girlfriends and was always very pleased with the dishes and the service.
Tonight we had 4pm reservations for a post birthday, birthday dinner - the food was excellent! Portions, flavors, seasoning and cooking temperature as well as variety on the menu was perfect.
It is located in an old movie theater that I think our server said was there around 1927 - WCK has been there approximately 6-7 years.
Service was phenomenal (it always is!) and our server Ameal (I’m spelling it phonetically, a-meal, how apropos!) 😁was fabulous!
We ordered the cheesy garlic bread - it is a MUST HAVE!!!! Omg I could make a meal of just the bread! Cheese, garlic, I think cream cheese, maybe mayo 😍 it’s phenomenal. Trust me you would be hard pressed to find anything better!
Gloria we went with the angry lobster too - EXCELLENT! So fresh, texture was spot on, lightly fried and seasoning was balanced. Really enjoyed this appetizer.
Next up was the wedge salad - excellent blue cheese dressing (their ranch is really good too!) but I wish it had red onions (the only thing missing).
We ordered the following sides: truffle fries, risotto and collards - cooked wonderfully!
Of course the fries are excellent but the risotto was my favorite. Texture was grainy/Al dente, which I expected of risotto versus dry or mushy - and the combination of seasoning/ingredients was really good!! Collards were flavorful and cooked perfectly, teeny bit of heat (I don’t do hot dishes) but it was balanced and by no means overly spicy.
Main dish was Norwegian Salmon soooo FRESH!! I ordered it medium and really should have done medium well - that’s my fault and now I know better - but the fish was so fresh it ended up working. I loved the flavor and the very light breading. Definitely recommend this dish!!!
Fiancé got the hand cut aged ribeye - cooked medium rare - EXCELLENT!!! Loved the outside sear and seasoning, it sat on mashed potatoes. I don’t do mashed or baked potatoes…but THESE were fabulous!! Very flavorful and I personally loved the creamy, light texture.
The only thing he said was missing was the cap, he thinks maybe the bone in may have a cap. Still, excellent ribeye, you could tell it was aged, highly recommend it.
Last but never least - we went with pineapple upside down cake with a layer of cheesecake in the middle 🤩😮 it was out of this world!!!!
And the crème brûlée which Gloria recommended - Some of THE BEST I’ve ever had! On par with Dresslers crème brûlée, if not better!!!! A bigger portion.
Fiancé wanted the pineapple to be carmelized, it wasn’t - but for me it was perfection! Not wet, not overly sweet, it was creamy and sooooo flavorful. We put some crème brûlée on it and it was the most amazing dessert! The cheesecake cake n the middle?? Holy cow!!!! Trust me, you will love it!!!
We told Ameal that Chef should try a crème brûlée ‘frosting’ on the pineapple upside down cake! It was fabulous! He said they are always looking for new ideas so who knows? Dodds Crème Brûlée Pineapple upside down cake may become ‘a thing’ 😎😁
It’s a hike but in my experience, totally worth it! Make sure you ask them to give you the story of the restaurant! Sooo interesting!!
We had our birthday dinner upstairs, it was a first! Loved watching Gene Kelly on screen while we ate!
It seems there are three floors/areas - first floor with a small bar you walk past to get to the various seating areas. The middle appeared to have a party room and tables and then of course, the third floor - I’ve included pictures and video for you all.
GREAT ATMOSPHERE! Oh and one more fun fact - the music playing on the sound system? Soundtracks to movies!!
Food is consistent and if there is even a hint of an issue - I know from previous visits they jump on it asap and make it right.
We don’t drink but I took pictures of the drink menu because I loved the names!!!! I have to say this entire place, everything in it, the attention to details - just blew us away.
Hope you get...
Read moreI was looking for something different, a destination beyond just a nice place with good food for our anniversary. Webb took us out of Charlotte and the place is definitely unique. It is an old theater from the 1920's, one of 3 Mr Webb opened back in the day. They restored the ceiling in the old way meant to help with sound dispersion before the age of modern sound systems. It is kept fairly original inside with old stairwells and balconies upstairs, a large screen behind the kitchen... "The Producers" was playing Friday evening. Our table was at one of the upper balconies with a great view over the kitchen and to the screen. There is a nice atmosphere but is not loud inside as one might fear, so you can hold a conversation :) Our waitress, Olivia, was very polite and attentive without being too present, she gave us a nice rundown of the theater's history. She must have been a drama student or theater enthusiast :) , the way she told us the story and also guided us though the menu. She made it even more interesting, we felt a passion rather than a mere job. The menu is solid and varied, also not too big which is one of my pet peeve. (Hello, Cheesecake Factory... ;) ) We had the duck cigars as an appetizer, as we are fans of duck confit, which we enjoy a lot on our trips to France. The dish was ok but not great, there other ingredients took away from the duck confit IMO, sometimes less is more. I am happy to get my money's worth, it is too much food for an appetizer. I'd rather pay 1/2 and get just 2 cigars vs. the 4 we received. It is very filling. My wife ordered the crab cakes and she loved them, just the right a point of crab, right consistency and cooked well. Portion was good too. I had the pork chop with makers sauce on the sweet potato puree and broccolini. The chop sits on the pure and probably not enough to be considered a side, but rather more a sauce, very yummy though with bacon pieces. Pork was very good with that caramelized tasting sauce and it is a huge piece. We had to try the potato cakes, which were delicious and very filling as well (2 cakes, so shareable). For dessert, they had many options, lots being cheesecakes or cheesecake based, which I am not a fan of. We shared the upside down pineapple cake due to gourmandise as we were not hungry - It was very tasty. We'll do the creme brulee and coconut cake next time and will remember to eat less before :) I think the food was good but not excellent, granted we only had a few items of the menu. The prices are high but not super high-end high either. I am not disappointed at all but it is not high end food quality in my humble opinion, for those expecting that. The portions in general are generous for that type of restaurant when so many offer such small portions for the same prices or more. You get your money's worth, again given the current high prices in the restaurant industry in general. We had two cocktails, and the cocktail selection is very decent. They aren’t cheap but in line with one would expect from such a place nowadays. I had a glass of wine, Malbec, during dinner with my dish. They have an extensive separate wine list that goes into the several $100’s, (1 was $1500 a bottle) for the wine enthusiasts. The main menu has a reasonable wine selection, some offered by the glass. Mine was $15/glass. We spent $190 all in for two with an app, two entrees, extra side and dessert, plus the 3 drinks.. with tax and tip. So given the type of restaurant, atmosphere service and food quality/portion, I don't think it is crazy expensive. it is what I expected, not something I'd do daily obviously.. The area in the old town isn't bad but needs more bars, restaurants and things to do, so people see it as a destination and want to hang out before or after dinner,...
Read moreWe've eaten at Webb a lot over the years, but have noticed that the quality of the food has become extremely unreliable over the past few years. We've had a lot of really great meals, and we've also had meals that we've either powered through or had to send back due to items being forgotten( though often still charged to the bill) or incorrect and (increasingly frequently) severely over or under cooked (including chicken that came out raw on the inside only to be brought back out practically dehydrated after it was sent back.
This takes us to last night, when my partner and I went out to enjoy what was supposed to be a nice dinner to end the week. Meal started out strong with well-prepared angry lobster, drinks, and Caesar salad. Meal took a turn when the medium bone-in cowboy ribeye with Danish blue cheese and truffle fries we had ordered were brought out. Steak arrived clearly way undercooked, by which I mean the exterior of the meat was still red, cool to the touch, and completely uncooked in numerous places, there was no blue cheese on the steak, and no truffle seasoning on the fries. When we advised the staff of the issues, what was returned to us was a steak a mile past well done (tough, bone dry and burnt black to the point that it left charcoal marks on the plate and my hands when I was transferring half to her plate) and the fries were a soggy, cold disappointment. We didn't have the energy or patience to send the food back again and were just ready to leave at that point, so we ended up leaving hungry after paying over $200 for a meal that included an $85 main that was completely inedible. We are not likely to return in the near future.
I realize that restaurants are having an incredibly difficult time with staffing right now and that Webb may be experiencing a lot of turnover in its kitchen crew. That said, poor quality control at such high prices is not acceptable, especially for something as relatively basic as a steak, and I would suggest modifying the menu to focus on more modestly priced items that are less sensitive to preparation errors until the staff training and quality control issues...
