This is an incredible campground! We stayed in a cabin, which worked out perfectly! We were very glad to have the AC unit during the summer heat. We were able to set the temperature (we chose 70-72F) and it kept up despite the 80-90F outside temperature. Since a cabin was available, we chose it over tent camping considering the OBX often has afternoon thunderstorms and gets quite muggy. The cabin had lots of hooks to hang items up and the table on the inside was great to have. The camp store is large and very well stocked and had a coffee machine if you didn’t want to make coffee and reasonably priced ice and firewood (ice and firewood are outside, so just ask at the front desk). There isn’t really a beach on the sound, but the Frisco public beach access is a very short drive away and has showers and bathrooms and is a nice beach. There was a tiny bit of poison ivy coming back in our friends wooded campsite, but it was very minimal and the campground has clearly worked hard to try to get rid of all the poison ivy. This is the Outer Banks in summer, so we were of course very worried about mosquitos which generally bite me like crazy. I wore a little bit of bugspray (I don’t think my husband or friends wore any) and none of us got any bites at the campground over three days. I don’t know what they spray, but it clearly works wonders and was so appreciated! The cabin also never had any spiders, ants or any other bugs and was perfectly clean when we arrived. As others mentioned, remember to bring a broom with you! We also brought a cheap full mattress topper we already had and I’m glad we did. There is a faucet right outside each cabin. The air conditioned bath houses with hot water and TP provided were also in great condition. The pool was a little crowded and had very minimal shade, but was still nice. The site is close to an ice cream shop and several restaurants. Overall,...
Read moreLet me start with the positive . . . The location on the Sound is amazing. Beautiful views and incredible access to the water.
Unfortunately, while we were there, a sustained wind event moved in and a coastal flood warning was issued for the next 4 days. We had a site on the Sound and were worried about the road in front of our site flooding as well as flooding on Hwy 12. We contacted the office and were told we had nothing to worry about and no refunds were available. When we awoke in the morning, the road in front of our site was covered in water from the Sound. We decided to cut our losses and leave. We are so thankful we did. That was just the first day of wind. The next day Hwy 12 was completely closed for several days. We would have been stuck on our flooded site and forced to pay for extra nights. We understand the owner cannot control the weather, but some compassion and honest advice would have been much appreciated. Just know, if there is a weather event and you have a site on the Sound, it will flood.
Also know that the wifi doesn't work throughout the campground. The owner knows and doesn't care. The wifi on the porch is amazing but it will not work on your site. I totally understand the difficult logistics. I just wish they were more honest about this when booking. The website should say, "Wifi access available at office," and not advertise wifi as part of the site amenities.
Additionally, the bath houses were not very clean. Both the men's and women's in the front and back needed cleaning several days in a row. The roads are also pretty rough and full of potholes. After experiencing the flooding, I completely understand why.
But again, the views and access to the Sound...
Read moreI’ve been camping for my entire life and come to Hatteras yearly. This was our first time at frisco woods and I had high hopes as Hatteras is my favorite place on earth. I will NEVER return to this campground. While every employee was very friendly welcoming and accommodating .. there was one who was not. And she “runs the show” as the other employees put it. Our site was right next to her permanent site. The first day she seemed nice as she talked to my husband .. however I thought it was rude that she didn’t even acknowledge that I was also standing right there. Day 2 .. she made a comment to my children and husband about picking up after our dogs. While obviously we are responsible pet owners and already know this. My husband and children told me she said it in a rude way. Day 3 her dogs were dog aggressive and ran towards our dogs barking frantically every time they came outside. Day 4 we had friends who are locals come over for dinner. The lot next to ours was empty so they parked their vehicle there. She asked us or more like demanded we move the vehicle because another guest was coming for that spot that night. The vehicle was moved. For the next 3 days that lot stayed empty. So was the vehicle really a big deal? No. But to her she made it very clear that it was. While the campground was pretty sub par to begin with.. mostly rocks for roads making bike riding difficult for the littles.. the only playground there was pretty boring. Nothing fancy at all. The pool is small and water was cloudy and they have cheap or fake trex deck around the pool that gets to a cool 200° burning and blistering your feet. I shared my experience with my family.. who are canceling their future...
