Goodness... Where do I start. I called the number to make my reservation and told the guy to go ahead and charge the credit card that I was giving him instead of just using it to hold the room. After we got to the hotel, gave the front desk my debit card (for in case of incidentals), and for up into the room, we were there less than 5 minutes before the phone rang and we were told that the card I gave them had insufficient funds and couldn't be used to pay for the room. As you can imagine, I was very confused since I was told that the room had been charged to the credit card that I gave them over the phone. I told them that I had paid for it when I made the reservation over the phone, and they informed me that they had no record of it. They THEN informed me that if I didn't IMMEDIATELY come down and give them a valid card that they were going to send up a bellhop to retrieve our things because we were not going to be allowed to stay in the hotel. I told them that I had no other card on me (what we were doing that weekend didn't require anything other than food money so I only brought my debit card which had about a couple hundred dollars on it) and they said that that wasn't their problem — if I didn't bring a valid card down in less than 15 minutes they would send security up to remove us from the hotel. I explained to them the only way for me to get the funds would be to call my mother to see if she had money that she could deposit online into my account and that there was a possibility that she wouldn't be able to get it done in 15 minutes. They again basically told me "oh well, not our problem" and hung up on me. I frantically called my mother to see if her or my father had the funds and a mean to transfer them to me. Thankfully they did, and I waited until I only had about 5 minutes to spare, hoping that the money had transferred. I went down to the lobby, where security was already waiting, and gave the front desk my debit card again. I didn't get an apology or anything, but I headed back up to the room, trying to not have an anxiety attack about having to borrow hundreds of dollars from my parents. Again, we are in the room for maybe 5 minutes when we hear someone at the door, and it sounds like someone is trying to get in. We can hear the sound of the key card going in and out and someone trying to force the door open. My best friend goes to the door so I don't have to and looks through the peep hole to see other hotel guests trying to get into our room. He tells them that they have the wrong room, but they ignore him. I was upset and crying, and very angry at this point, so I go and wait until he's stepped out of view (he was in his pj's at this point and is a little modest) and I opened the door and told them, "oh my god, stop—you have the wrong room." I don't even get the door closed before I'm crying again. AND YET AGAIN, not even 5 minutes later the phone rings AGAIN and finally the manager sees fit to apologize, but not for what happened earlier—I only get an apology for them putting our room number on the other guests' paper key card holder, which in "nice" words they said happened because the other guests were going to get our room that would have already been paid for had THEIR PEOPLE done their job right. They sent us up coupons for two free drinks and an appetizer from the hotel bar, but honestly I was so upset at that point that I was not going to go down there to give them more business, even if it was free. I understand that yes, if we had no means to pay then we wouldn't be allowed to stay at the hotel. But the manager was extremely rude to me and literally told me, "I'm sorry, but that's your problem, not mine." The event we went to was Comicpalooza and you can bet that come next year I'll be letting people know where NOT to stay unless they want to get repeatedly harassed because of mistakes that the staff at this...

That said the service was great. My booking got messed up by a work colleague and the front desk fixed the error and got me into the room ahead of check in. 10/10 for fast and humble service.
So let’s break down the hotel and what it offers.
The Hampton Inn Downtown stands as a reliable option for both business travelers and leisure seekers. With its modestly appointed rooms and a welcoming atmosphere, this hotel embodies the essence of the Hampton brand, offering a comfortable stay without the frills.
Upon entering, guests are greeted by the friendly front desk staff, whose helpfulness shines like a beacon after a long day of travel. They are quick to offer recommendations for nearby dining options or assistance with any inquiries, ensuring that your experience begins on a positive note. Their warmth sets the tone for what feels like a home away from home.
The rooms themselves are what you might expect from a Hampton Inn— “modestly appointed yet functional.” Each room comes equipped with the essentials: a cozy bed, a clean bathroom, and all the necessary amenities to make your stay comfortable. While you won’t find extravagant decor or lavish furnishings, the simplicity is refreshing and aligns perfectly with the hotel’s purpose. After all, when you're in the city for work or to explore, a space that allows you to recharge and regroup is what you truly need.
One highlight of the stay is the complimentary breakfast, a nice addition that fuels you for the day ahead. The spread includes a variety of options, from fresh fruits to warm pastries and even a make-your-own waffle station. However, as I savored my breakfast, I couldn’t help but wish for a more environmentally conscious approach. The reliance on disposable products—though convenient—takes a toll on our planet. While recycling and biodegrading initiatives are commendable, a shift towards reducing single-use items would elevate the experience to a more sustainable level.
Location is key, and the Hampton Inn Downtown does not disappoint. For those attending conferences at the nearby convention center, this hotel is a mere stone's throw away, making it an ideal choice. The proximity to numerous restaurants and bars adds to its appeal, offering a vibrant nightlife and culinary scene just a short stroll from your front door. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual bite or an upscale dining experience, the neighborhood is brimming with options to satisfy your cravings.
In essence, the Hampton Inn Downtown Houston strikes a balance between comfort and convenience. The modestly appointed rooms meet the needs of travelers, while the attentive front desk staff ensure that your stay is as smooth as possible. The breakfast is a delightful perk, albeit with room for improvement in sustainability. For anyone visiting the convention center or seeking a place to unwind after a day exploring the bustling city, this hotel is a solid choice.
So, if you find yourself in the heart of Houston—whether for business or pleasure—consider the Hampton Inn Downtown. It offers a blend of practicality, warmth, and a touch of local flavor, making it a welcoming stop in this dynamic city. A little slice of comfort amid the urban hustle, it just might be the perfect fit for your...
Read moreLet me start off by saying, I love the Hampton Inn. It is, by far, my favorite hotel. Which is why we choose them for Saturday night. So why the bad review you ask?
::clears throat::
Saturday, March 9th, my husband and I celebrated our 11 year wedding anniversary. Yay for us! So after dinner we pull up to the Hampton Inn Downtown. There is an area that is clearly marked with several cones that have "valet" written on them. We pull up behind a pick up that is also valeting, the valets take care of them and we pull up further. We are now the only car in the valet section. We wait....as we make awkward eye contact with the two valets looking back at us. No one comes to the car. We wait some more. My husband receives a phone call, he takes it. I attempt to open my own door and husband says, "no, I want to see how long it takes them to come open your door". Husband finishes his phone call and gets out, walks around and opens my door for me. Then the valets come over to us. My husband asks if this is where we valet for the Hampton and the valet says "yes, but we only valet sometimes." My husband says, "ok, well are you valeting now?" And the valet replies "yes, are you staying here?" And several other words were had.
Now before you think we are all bougie and stuck up, let me just say that my husband worked as a valet for several years at different places and is critical of valets that judge people by their car and don't open doors for ladies. Now I'm not saying we were judged by our dirty Honda Civic pulling up to a fairly nice hotel, but we sure felt like we were.
So we walk into the hotel to check in and the guy at the front, who by the way was very nice I will say that, tells us that even though we booked a king bed, they were all out of kings and they would give us the two double beds instead. Well, that's so nice for our anniversary right? He does comp our valet for the inconvenience. Which is great seeing as how the valet was terrible anyways.
So we get to our hotel room to freshen up so we can hit the downtown bars. I sit down to pee and what do I see glaring at me from the wall, but a giant bloody booger staring into my soul. Now I'm worried. If there is a giant, bloody booger on the wall what else has not been cleaned? Y'all think I'm playing and this is why I've choosen to attach the picture of the booger to this review. I wish they would let me attach the Snapchat video, because it's way more entertaining.
I will say that the breakfast, as usual, was bomb AF and this is why they get two stars instead of one!
Enjoy your stay! I was thoroughly disappointed. FYI we still had a great...
