I've made it a point to visit this restaurant several times, but my efforts were always thwarted because of something unrelated. I had the opportunity recently to visit with a good friend of mine. After discovering it was also black-owned, I was even more excited. My anticipation was for naught. I had an amazing experience (that's what you pay for anyway right?).
Cattleya was our server and was very knowledgeable, charming, and engaging. We enjoyed her from the start. I rather enjoy when wait staff understand the vision of the restaurant, the make up of the menu, and provide interesting anecdotes about themselves throughout the interaction.
We had the fried okra and the calas and collards for appetizers and were impressed. The fried okra was light and not greasy and cut into what seemed like angle cut chips. The calas and collards was their take on spinach and artichoke dip. Next time I'm ordering two of those (ome for me and one for the table).
The "plat principal" was the generically named whole fish which was fresh red snapper flash fried and seasoned among freshly prepared coleslaw (more savory than sweet). Dotting the plate was handmade hot sauce and a lighter cilantro based sauce garnished with potato pave. There was nothing generic about this dish aside from the name. The fish was tender, rich, flaky, and flavorful. I live the light better. The coleslaw was delicious, despite the fact that being from Louisiana I'm used to sweetened slaw. The sauces and potato were an interesting take and paired well with the dish. Another plus is that the fish wasn't greasy at all (đđž).
Aesthetically, I enjoyed the look and feel of the eatery. There was great energy as soon as we walked in and the host was very friendly. The space encompasses warm and rich colors in a trendy setting with not too close tables and great ambiance with chill music. We didn't order from the bar, but it looked clean, organized and full. We also learned that despite the restaurant closing from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the bar stays open the entire day. There are live bands that play throughout the weekend and it's important to make a reservation if possible though walk-ins are welcome. For parking, you can use the garage and the restaurant has validation tickets if needed.
I love the recap area which has nice accent chairs for a nightcap or to just hang out if you're not eating a meal. Over all, this was a great experience and I plan to return soon with other friends who can appreciate the experience and kulture of...
Read moreWe were visiting Houston for our annual family reunion and during our downtime we decided to give Kulture a try since it was black owned and centrally located. The atmosphere was amazing, thanks to a beautiful singer who welcomed us to Houston with her talent. The restaurant is gorgeous with downtown Houston as a backdrop. Our waitress, presented herself as our best friend as she took our orders, she acted as if she knew us well, she had peeped our family reunion t-shirts so we felt her service was genuine. The food was delicious for some of us and not so much for a few. When she took my order I told her that I wanted the shrimp pasta without the shrimp because I was allergic and vegan. She said I got you. When they brought my dish, she immediately told the runner to take it back because it was not as she had instructed. I was the last person to get my dish after 10 addl minutes, when I received it, the dish was like warm and it was in fact the same dish she sent back and I found a piece of meat in the dish, but I chose not to say anything. The kicker was the fact that we visited the restaurant on 7/13/2024. It was verified that all drinks would be $7.13 by management.â My party of 11 ordered accordingly based off the quoted price. When the check came we were told that only certain drinks were $7.13 and with that our check double in price to over $850.00 and they donât split checks but they did agree to take up to 4 credit cards for payment. We had the biggest party in the restaurant, but I watched as the manager went from table to table greeting other parties, he never once came to our table to greet us until we had questions about the check. My overall experience was that this was a scheme and a con job from the moment we entered. We understand that the âblack taxâ is a real thing, weâve travel throughout the country with our national family reunion, but this intentional practice of misquoting drink prices and not honoring the quoted price was shameless. We hope that management and the young waitress change their practices, if so they might have the first class establishment theyâre trying to portray they...
Read moreMy daughter and her friend just celebrated their 18th birthday here and the service was terrible!!!! I really try and support black owned businesses, but they MUST do better!!!! My daughter and her friend celebrated their 18th birthday which is a huge milestone and it was ruined!!!! They made reservations for 7pm and waited there with their 14teen guest for 2 hours just to be seated!!! The manager allowed another party of ten that was an hour late by the way to hold up my daughterâs guest while they just continued to sit there and hold the table, mind you they were done and was not ordering anything!!!! My daughter and her guests continued to wait! Keep in my this is a group of 17teen and 18teen year olds who were starving and thirsty! I finally arrived to see what was going on and they were just being seated. I talked to Chef Sean and he told me that they were short staff with only (3) people working which included (1) waitress/bar tender, (1) cook/ bus boy, and him. Also keep in mind there are two other tables of guests that are also waiting. My daughter and her friends finally placed an order 2 1/2 hours later with no drinks or appetizers to hold them. You wonder why we didnât go someplace else well thatâs because they were given the run around and he (Chef Sean) kept reassuring them they would be right with them. By this time itâs late and all another restaurants are preparing to close and itâs kind of hard to take 20 guests any where else that late!!!! They got their food at 11pm to go!!!! On top of all that Chef Sean charged my daughter and her party full price with no discount, half off, on the house, discount when you return, gift card, no apology for ruining my daughterâs 18 birthday, no thank you or good night!!!! Just sad!!!!!! I was soooo embarrassed for my daughter and she was too along with her friend!!!! Long story short is they MUST DO BETTER!!!! Especially if they want continuous support from the black community or anyone else for that matter!! JS!!!!đ I hope and pray others have a better experience with them because Iâm traumatized by this...
