During a walk-through for a client as we planned their conference, we embarked upon a cozy little gem in the Hyde Park Neighborhood and had a cookie at the front desk before departing. Small little details make your brand standout. They call their lobby a living room and it made you feel just welcomed.

We encountered one of the warmest and friendliest group of staff at the front desk. We arrived early and they found us a room so that we could rest after a long day of travel. The front desk also provided great food recommendations. All of the furniture in the lobby and rooms was comfortable and high quality. The beds and sheets were also a higher quality than most hotels where we have stayed. We were in Chicago to visit the University of Chicago and the hotel is a pleasant walk to campus. We did daytime and nighttime visits to the campus and enjoyed all of them, including the fireflies at twilight in the grass plazas between the hotel and campus. We hope we’ll be able to stay here again.

We were in town for the the Lifetime half marathon and this was the perfect location! We scheduled an Uber for early pickup which was very helpful getting us to the drop off but the hotel is close enough to walk to the start - and we walked back after the finish! The rooms were clean, two beds, bathroom was nice, we wished there had been a fridge and a coffee maker so we could keep our drinks and pre- race food cooled, but overall, a decent stay. The lobby is cute and comfortable. Would stay there again and definitely recommend if you’ll be on the University of Chicago campus.

I stayed at The Study for 6 months, and needless to say that the quality of excellent service was consistent throughout my stay. The staff was extremely warm, welcoming, kind and cheerful.|With such a lengthy stay, I was naturally acquainted with all the staff members and bonded with them. I would also like to point out that although I had become "friends" with the staff members over the course of 6 months, they maintained their professionalism. They always went out of their way for me.||Karin Watson: Karin has been so hospitable and welcoming. The very first day I had arrived, I remember meeting her for the first time. She so enthusiastically invited me to have a look around the property and get comfortable with what would be my home for the next 6 months. I would run into her at the lobby quite often, and she would always so kindly invite me for a chat or for snacks when events were held at the hotel. She's a confident, kind and sociable person who always works towards providing the best experience for those staying at The Study.||Cornelius Moore: Cornelius was extremely warm, supportive and efficient. He was always vigilant to my needs and wants. Even for the simplest of things such as the coffee milk running out, he would go and get a refill before it ran out, knowing I would always come down at a certain time for my coffee in the morning. It was refreshing to talk to him in the mornings as i had my coffee and I knew I could count on him to take care of anything I needed assistance with.||Herlinda: Herlinda is an absolute gem. She was super responsive to my needs and always had a bright smile on her face which made me feel at home. Before I knew it, it became my habit to look back at the reception to say bye before heading to classes and hi when I came back. She was also very clear in her communication and efficient in the way she handled things, which when coupled with her cheerful vibe, made me feel extremely comfortable and natural to speak to her.||Kelsie Earls: Kelsie has been so kind to me. She was so encouraging and enthusiastic, and would always look out for me. We had a lot of things in common that we liked to do, and it was always fun to talk about them, especially on days when I felt a bit overwhelmed with university assignments. Talking to her would always make me feel more relaxed and refreshed. She is also very alert and catches tiny details easily, which helps avoid potential confusions or miscommunications.||Tarron Martin: Tarron is one of the most happy-go-lucky people I have ever met. He was always smiling, regardless of the time of the day. He would always be there whenever I needed something on an urgent basis and was generally just so cheerful and supportive. He's really observant, and knows how to read customers well. We even had a little joke that perhaps we were telepathic because he knew exactly what I required and in what way I wanted it, before I could voice it out.||I'm so glad I chose to stay at the Study-- the staff made me feel like it was a second home, and the location made it extremely convenient for me to walk to campus. It barely took me about 6-7 minutes to walk to the building where my classes were held, which was a huge advantage on rainy or snowy days. Regardless of whoever was at the front desk, they would always make sure I had an umbrella to take on rainy or snowy days.||I highly recommend the Study for it's excellent location and...

On Saturday, July 20th we checked into The Study. I booked this room months in advance and about a week prior to our arrival, I received an email from the hotel asking what time to expect us. I replied that we would be there at approximately noon, and they let me know that they would look forward to seeing us then. When we arrived a couple minutes after noon, I was informed by the front desk that our room was not yet ready. I asked for an ETA and the employee explained that she could not provide one because she had just gotten there. While frustrating, this did not seem like a big deal since check in at hotels is frequently after 1 PM- however, I was confused as to why they sent me an email asking when to expect us. We waited in the lobby for nearly 2 hours until we were informed that our room was ready for us.

Upon entering the room, it was clear that it had been hastily cleaned. Many surfaces were dirty, grimy, or smudgy- which raised concerns about how sanitary it was.

We went out for the day and arrived back at the hotel at approximately 1 AM for bed. When I went to roll down the shades, I noticed that there were two rollers, but one of them was bare (missing a curtain). To my unfortunate surprise, I was awakened at about 6 AM when the sun rose. It was the blackout curtain that was missing (see photos).

Let me conclude this review by saying that had this been a $150 hotel room, I would have been disappointed but not felt the need to voice it. However, I paid over $240 in total for a single night in what can only be described as sub-par, less than mediocre suite.

I would not recommend...

The Study is a very new hotel with everything feeling new from the bathrooms to the architecture and card access. The staff was kind and friendly, even for a very very late check in (2 am). There was always a person at the front to open the door for you. The breakfast bar was fresh and well stocked to get a good (complimentary) breakfast and coffee as long as you were down before 10am. A few small areas that they could improve: 1) was way too tired to remember what the desk person said when I checked in, so a little info sheet about the hotel would be really nice to go along with the other information they handed out about the area (items such as where the gym is, ice machine, water bottles are free, breakfast hours, check-out time, etc.), 2) not really changeable now, but the bathroom door and shower door are hard to go between and could present difficulties for those with physical disabilities, 3) WiFi is really slow, not as advertised, 4) stable tables to place food on during breakfast in the lobby would be really helpful. They include an alarm clock with a wireless charger built into the top for compatible devices and usb-b ports for other cords. Know that the area is not that safe to be in, especially past dark and to the South of the hotel. Be ready to Uber/Lyft to...
