We wish we had paid more attention to the negative comments regarding the staff's behavior. We've been traveling for 2.5 months and booked a Queen Size bedroom because we mainly needed a place to sleep and shower. We've experienced quite a few accommodations and are not very demanding. However, we have never encountered such an outrageous situation before: Unfortunately, one of us got sick and we both spent the first few days in bed and couldn't do anything. Within the first night our entire bodies got very itchy, and it kept getting worse every day. We thought there might be mosquitoes in the room. But after failing to find any and taking a closer look at the bites, we realized it must be bedbugs. We went to the reception and reported it. The owner's daughter came into the room for maybe 15 seconds, lifted the blanket at one corner, left and said she would speak to the "manager." She called us later and said: The bed is brand new (uh-huh...😅) and she didn't see any bedbugs either. They couldn’t offer us a new room, so if we didn't want to stay, we'd have to find another hotel. Fair enough. We went back to the reception to sort things out in person. The owner told us there are no bedbugs in her hotel and basically tried to make us look like fools. We wouldn’t have written this review if they had at least made an effort to resolve the problem somehow (e.g. cleaning/spraying the room or whatever would have been necessary), but they didn’t listen to us, constantly interrupted and eventually started yelling at us. The situation completely escalated, even though we were simply asking for confirmation of the refund for the last few days. In the end, they called the police (which we weren't unhappy about), as they wanted us to leave immediately. The cherry on top was when the daughter claimed, as we were leaving, that they wouldn’t give us anything back and that we actually owed them more because, according to her, we had three people in the room. She said she had "seen with her own eyes" that we had a man in the room. But we're a lesbian couple and don't carry a man in our hand luggage :-) To top it off, they felt the need to lie about that too. Oh and since we’re at it: our room was actually dirty, and the blankets/pillows smelled anything but good. The location was great, though, the free beach towels and the microwave/fridge in the room were a plus. The staff is friendly as long as you don’t voice any problems. So make sure you don’t have any issues, or shell out a few more dollars and enjoy your stay elsewhere. Cheers from the two of us and the man who doesn’t exist :-)

It pains me to even write this review because we stayed there in 2017 and had a wonderful experience. Sadly, that was not the case this year. The location is immaculate and you really do get amazing views. But the room, was incredibly dirty and disappointing. There were what appeared to be blood stains on the patio curtains, stains on the sheets that we didn't notice until the last night when we were making our own bed (they don't service the room unless you ask and even still that's just changing towels and taking garbage) The bathtub had a hole in it, none of the drains had covers, NAILS sticking out of the bottom of the door, and the walls need a paint job in the worst way. The TV was also so small and low that when in bed you could only see the top half. The furniture is also incredibly dated, it's like they found it all at yard sales. None of the pictures on their website reflect the condition of the rooms. The AC also had mold all inside of it. The icing on the cake though was when the guest 2 doors down (related to management) spent our entire last evening there chain smoking on their patio and listening to their radio/phone very loud. We couldn't even enjoy the only part of the hotel left to enjoy. When we mentioned it to the staff as we checked out, we later noticed them talking to one of the people from that room outside and arguing about it. They also had a dog with them not on a leash. I'm sure it's a nice dog, seemed well behaved, but we paid a lot of money when the hotel seemed to be full of staff friends and family. They also took up a lot of parking spaces. This isn't the same Hotel Coral Reef we visited 8 years ago, and definitely isn't the same management. It's in shambles. I also want to add we tried to switch hotels and called 3 different places to see if they had availability but they were completely booked.

Ok listen, I know that there are good and bad reviews for every place, but you should REALLY read this before booking with Hotel Coral Reef in Kapaa Kauai. Our first night there I slept in one of the double beds that had its springs broken (big divot in the bed). That morning we went to make coffee and found the coffee pot had left over coffee and grounds in it. That evening we went to heat up some snacks before hitting the beach and found chunks of food in the microwave! The toilet seat was stained and chipped and signs of mold were evident around the tub and ceilings. The shower curtain was torn and the curtain rod was rusted. Overall the room looked and felt dirty. Went to use the pool but apparently that was taken up by family and or friends of the hotel owner/employees, not to mention the two dogs they had, when it clearly states in there own rules "no dogs" in the pool area! Not that I have anything against the dogs. To add to all this, the AC could not be controlled one way or another and was dripping some sort of brown fluid. The patio had busted up tile that I cut my foot on! Can't complain about the view or close proximity to beach, but man, I'm going to spend a few extra $$ next time so I don't have to worry about catching something or a tetanus shot after leaving this place. Not just bitching hear, see some of the photos to back this up......

I think the best way to describe this place is a place that is a mix of outdated and updated amenities with a killer ocean front view. Normally a view like this and so close to the ocean would cost you $600+ a night however their starting rates currently are just over $100. Talking about amenities and staff; you get solid free wifi, decent flat screen TV with many channels, helpful staff, the ability to use the bikes and other beach gear, towels etc. Currently you due to the health conditions, if you want room service you'll have to call to have them come in and there is a 800 number for any emergencies for after office hours. The bathroom has new marble sinks and flooring however the shower was converted from a whirl pool tube but the shower and sinks worked just fine. The bed was large and soft though the pleather head board was chipping away. The sink and counter in the main room was updated with marble and nice and the balcony was pretty to sit out on. MOUSE SIGHTING; The only thing that freaked us out on was one morning we work up the a furry critter with a tail eating some food on the counter. In 8 days we only saw it for that quick moment and never saw it again or any continued remenats other then some droppings in a draw. Hotel said they would lay down traps in the room but we never saw any and that was all that was done on that situation. Overall you are paying for killer views for super cheap price and if they did some spurcing up here and there and updated the remaining parts of their oms they could charge alot more. Would I stay here again? I think I would knowing that for that price I could walk right out to the beach and see ocean views like that. It's not your new brand pose hotel room but this room was clean, smelled nice was a good place to rest to go on...
