I'll start by saying that the staff was very friendly and helpful. Check-in was easy and quick. Those details combined, with just being an overall OK place, gets it 3-stars (mainly because anything less is indicative of being a horrible experience). Just to be clear, this is a very old, historic building. They play this card throughout the entire hotel. The building itself is unique and has a lot of character. However, we felt that they over do it a little on trying to maintain the historic experience. For example, the place just felt old and dirty. The hallways were dimly lit. The bathroom of our Grand King Suite was just dingy. Yeah, I get it...the place is old and historic, but the bathroom itself, tub, toilet, and fixtures are just old, not historic. The furniture is a weird mix of old and new. The kitchenette really ruins the historic vibe of the room, because it's a cheap looking remodel effort. The room we had was heated by radiators. Even though we turned them off and used the mini-split unit, there was a randomly occurring strange LOUD ticking noise coming from the radiators (or somewhere...we never figured it out), and that made it hard to sleep. The nearby train with its LOUD and LONG horn bursts throughout the night also make it hard to sleep. Yes, they provide ear plugs, but some of the better hotels will actually put a sound machine in the room to help drown out obnoxious noises like that. The hotel lobby area, restaurant, bar and store attached to the hotel were closed (restaurant only providing take-out service) due to COVID, which was strange considering that most other restaurants and stores in town were open and not prohibitively limiting. On the "personal gripe" level, there was far too much communication from the hotel via email. Add that to the excessive amount of instructions all over the hotel, everything from lengthy descriptions of parking instructions to confusing instructions for TV operation and the "do's and don'ts" of the hotel...it quickly becomes very exhausting. With their instructions, they attempt to be cute and quaint in an effort to maintain an old west, historic vibe, but it just makes things confusing. They also "over-communicated" the gloom and doom aspect of how COVID was affecting the town of Livingston. Based on their communication, we expected it to be a ghost town with nowhere to eat and nothing to do, but that was absolutely not true (and we visited during down season when places might ordinarily be closed anyway). When and if we return to Livingston, we'll stay elsewhere in town...
Read moreThis is truly a special place to stay in the most beautiful part of Montana. The Murray Hotel is historic, classic, old and modern and the same time and it has the best bar and restaurant in town connected to it. My room was very comfortable with very cool art pieces in the room. They keep true to its historic roots along with making sure the hotel is kept up with modern amenities that make you feel comfortable. They have a big comfortable old style bed with with a old school desk for writing or using your computer with a flat screen tv with all the cable channels you'd need to relax. The shower is heaven with great bedding and towels.... they invested a lot of money to make you have nice sheets and stuff. The lobby is really cool with antiques and cool animal decorations. They have an epic bar where all the locals go to drink at night and tons of local draft beers that are incredible..... the staff is extremley friendly and you'll meet all the cool locals at the bar. They have a restaurant attached called Gil's which makes the best breakfast ever and the best dinner everrrrr....... the steak was amazing along with the morning buscuits and gravy ..... i kept ordering more food at dinner cause it was soooooo good..... Livingston is a special place in America..... this hotel is one of the...
Read moreThis is more than just a hotel room, it's an experience. |The rooms were intriguingly decorated in Western theme. My room was kitted with Winter skiing pictures from the past. Thoughtful little amenities (toothpaste, two packs of drip coffee, postcard from old Livingston...). And everything was spotless. Bed was super comfy; shower was great. The air conditioner was over the bed and totally soundless. (Why can't other hotels have soundless air conditioners?) If you wanted, you could have made it snow in the room, the air conditioner was so efficient. |Staff were super friendly and clearly enjoyed working there and sharing such a unique hotel with guests. All around the hotel are memorabilia - it's like a museum. On the third floor, there is access to an outside patio which provides a view of the mountains and Livingston proper. |Yes, you do hear the trains at night. The hotel is right across from the main station. That is part of its charm. Possibly a room facing the back, away from the station might be a little less noisy. But you can hear the trains anywhere in Livingston; it is a railroad town. |They have several different types of rooms, each decorated differently. |Definitely...
