In short, during this time of uncertainty and COVID trepidation, our primary concern was overall cleanliness. My family of 3 (husband, wife, 8-year old daughter) was willing to overlook a number of standard requirements in exchange. What a great surprise that we didn't have to overlook anything. From the time we checked in until the time we checked out our experience was top notch.
OLDER MOTEL - Part of the charm of Maggie Valley is the older, "mom and pop" motels and their rustic settings. Stony Creek had that and more. With rooms facing the main drag of Maggie Valley and ample rocking chairs open for relaxing, despite the age of the lodge it was quaint and well-kept.
CLEANLINESS - When we opened the door we were met with a pleasant smell that wasn't overly perfumed or Lysol-like. The air was neither damp nor dry but really comfortable. The beds were well made and the comforters smelled as if they had just been pulled from the laundry. The dressers and nightstand were dusted, the coffee pot was clean, the microwave was clean...even the windowsills were clean! The bathroom was truly gleaming. It was as if you entered a bathroom at a more luxurious hotel. There was no sign of caulk holding tiles in random places or residue around the commode. We were put at ease straight away.
COMFORT - While not SleepNumbers or Tuft & Needle mattresses, the beds were quite comfortable. A little soft if you are looking for a concrete sidewalk but it wasn't as if springs were jabbing into your back all night long. The sheets were soft and the pillows were supple. There was a nice comforter on each bed in our room and extra blankets available.
WIFI - If you feel you must access the Internet when in the beauty of the western Carolina mountains, the motel does offer WiFi. It can be spotty the further away from the office you get but it is present.
SAFETY - There were no alarming sounds while we slept. There were no sketchy loiterers or questionable characters. We felt completely safe the entire time.
PARKING - Unlike some motels you are able to park directly in front of your room, making loading/unloading much easier. Very convenient.
Overall, our stay at Stony Creek Lodge was perfect. It was affordable. The staff was gracious and kind. The rooms were comfortable. A great choice when traveling through...
Read moreTLDR: Doesn't care about ADA, Canceled reservation after finding out I have a (actual) service dog.||We chose this motel for two reasons, proximity to Joeys Pancake House (GREAT place to eat BTW) and a balcony over the creek to sit and relax on. Booked a KING bed balcony room for the weekend, arrived for check in and was promptly greeted by a little dog at the front desk. Paid for our room and asked where to walk my SERVICE DOG who was out in the truck. (Note, this is NOT a emotional support dog, but a medical alert dog that alerts me when a problem is developing) Figured shouldn't be any issues after being greeted by their office dog and the "pet friendly" on the website. Wrong!!! At that point you would have thought I stood up doing an Ozzy impression in front of the whole church on Sunday morning. Instantly wanted to change the room to a "pet friendly" room, which was NOT a balcony, and NOT a king as they might have a guest that was allergic. (this is after being greeted by a little dog jumping up wanting attention during check in. What if I was that allergic guest?!?!) I pointed out that was not my concern and that under ADA that was not allowed. Continued to argue with me that yes they could do that, and hotels were exempt (once again, incorrect) and then said she would just cancel our reservation, yet wouldn't provide a proof of refund on the card (more on that in a few). This on a weekend where most everything was booked for an event (the main reason we were in town). Fortunately, I was able to get a king at Meadowlark (you can see my review there), and our weekend and trip wasn't ruined. Sorry to all for the long review, but there you go. Oh, as for the card? It was NOT refunded and we had to file a dispute to get it reversed. On the brightside, complaint filed to DOJ Civil...
