Great for an affordable stay, but the rooms and hotel are quite dated as others have said. We came for an early summer trip, so proximity to ski trails wasn't necessarily a benefit, but the hotel is still in a good location about 15 minutes from town and even closer to some great sights (Minaret vista, Wooly's mountain coaster, etc)
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I was surprised at the level of kindness and availability they offered considering the low price of the room. There is a convenience store that sells basic amenities along with some Mammoth themed merchandise, on site coin-op laundry (with a change machine and a microwave), heated pool and several hot tubs, basic fitness center with a few machines, and a game room with some consoles and a foosball table. Rooms come with one parking spot in a covered garage. Spots are not assigned, and the garage is very tight with lots of poles to navigate around, so you may have some trouble finding a spot later at night. Weirdly, the roof of the garage forms a huge flat blacktop-like area between the two main buildings, which is accessible for people to walk on. If your room is on the first floor you may get the occasional family walking by your window. This wasn't a problem so much as it was confusing - where does it go? Folks who accidentally found themselves here and passing our window seemed just as puzzled as we did! Maybe this area serves some purpose in the winter?
The rooms come with extra pillows, a box fan, and a powerful humidifier, all of which were very welcomed and helped us get some better sleep while we adjusted. The air is not only thin, but also very dry! I highly recommend making use of that humidifier right away if you're visiting from lower altititudes (such as LA ☺️)
The rooms could definitely use some repairs or updating, especially the bathrooms. We saw some water damage behind the toilet, and a few corners of chipped paint and plaster in the room. The shower was fine, but quite dated with adhesive residue from previous generations of anti-slip strips. The pump on one of the refillable shower gel dispensers didn't work, which was fine for us since we brought our own, but could be a pain for others. Water pressure was just OK, but the water did get hot right away and stayed hot even for a very long shower!
The main lobby, general store, and pool area were in great shape. The game room was quite rough. Laundry room was functional, and had a microwave available to heat up any food or leftovers, which we were grateful for! The laundry room closes at 10 PM so make sure you microwave anything before then! The hallways were quite dated, our hall had a musty scent near the ice machine.
Overall, a great place to stay, at a great price, if you don't mind some blemishes. Especially just as a place to crash after exploring all day.
Pros Excellent service and friendly staff Rooms and sheets cleaned daily Included parking Pre-equipped with fan and humidifier Free WiFi Close to town/lots of sights Gondola access and Postpile shuttle are next door Bathroom has a real door for actual privacy (compared to a sliding door popular at many hotels) Rooms come with an empty mini fridge (no fighting for space amongst mini bar items!) Rooms are kept as clean as possible despite dated condition Minaret Vista is right up the road, great to catch a gorgeous sunset if you have a few minutes to spare at the end of a day
Cons Dated rooms Some of the less frequented common areas are rough Indoor parking can be tight/difficult (even with a tiny Honda Fit!) Many rooms won't have a nice view No air...
Read moreI was extremely disappointed in my stay at Mammoth Mountain Inn, to the point that I sent them an email directly to express my frustration.
This was my first time at Mammoth Mountain Inn, and my expectations were high. But my experience was so awful that I will not return ever again.
Firstly, regarding my room: I paid nearly $250 to book a two-bed hotel room for one night. Based on the website, I expected a room in the beautiful main building. I had no idea there were multiple buildings with hotel rooms on the property, as the website doesn't reflect this, and we ended up getting assigned to room 919. The building looks like an old motel. We struggled to find it at first because the front desk associate that checked us in drew a map to the wrong building. While the room was clean, it certainly was not worth more than $100, especially during summer when you have more open rooms in the main building. I feel like I drastically overpaid for this room, and it doesn't even have a mountain view! We just overlook a messy alleyway. I had no idea when I booked that this would be the room I was assigned, and I don't understand why anyone would be okay paying $250 for it.
Next, regarding dinner at the Mountainside Bar and Grill, in the main building: If you're going to charge $23 for a cheeseburger, your cooks should be able to cook it properly. I ordered it medium-rare and received medium-well. I dined with a friend, who was served water in a dirty glass from a dirty carafe (pictures attached) and who had to wait until after food was served to remind our waiter that she had ordered a soda. I have more than 15 years' experience working in restaurants, and I'm not complaining just for the sake of complaining. Your prices would suggest a certain standard of cleanliness and professionalism that I did not see tonight. We didn't know that the waiter who greeted us actually worked there at first because he is just wearing an untucked black shirt and jeans. The table next to us was also having issues, complaining to each other that the chicken is over-seasoned and the salad dressing they ordered tastes strange. We were planning on doing breakfast at the restaurant before checking out, but there's no way I'd spend more money for that low level of food quality/cleanliness.
In total, I've spent more than $350 now to sleep in an alley-view motel room and to go out for dinner and be served overcooked food and dirty glassware from an inattentive waiter who blends in with the customers. I've been all over the country and I've stayed in myriad hotels. I expected this one to live up to the hype that I saw online, but instead I'm deeply disappointed. This is not an acceptable guest experience, and I will not be returning.
I was hoping that the email I sent would have gotten a proper response from management, but it's been over a week now and the only response I received was basically, "Sorry, we'll let management know". I'm not looking for a refund; I'm looking for accountability and recognition that you all overcharged and underperformed.
At this time, I would not recommend anyone stay at Mammoth Mountain Inn. It's not worth the money you'll spend, and they don't...
Read moreMy family and I have always loved the Mammoth Mountain Inn and have been coming to our "home away from home" for years. The main building is reminiscent of a grand ski lodge from the golden age of skiing and still has all of its original charm and beauty. One of the greatest features of this incredible lodge is the ski on ski off location... from the ski valet, where our snowboards are kept nice and warm for us, to the gondola is literally 150 feet! The views from the rooms are to die for!
The staff is amazing and it all begins with their incredible new leader, the general manager, Mike Peckenpaugh! Our last visit was during the New Years week and there were several feet of new snow just before we arrived, so outdoor parking was somewhat of a challenge. When we got to the front desk we saw a hard working employee wearing a yellow snow jacket and was covered in snow with work gloves on. I'm thinking it was one of maintenance staff or grounds crew, but then he went behind the desk to help one of the clerks on the computer. After we were finished checking in and had our gear and luggage out of the car (with the help of one of our all time favorite bell staff, Weston McCarthy) we were talking with Wes and a couple other staff members who said we really need to meet the new manager, Mike. Lo and behold, the hard working guy in the yellow snow jacket ended up being Mike Peckenpaugh! I was thoroughly impressed by Mike's obvious work ethic, but his "lead by example" management style is what really stood out. We stayed for three nights and on the second night we got hit with another big load of snow. It continued to snow all through the next day and our Escalade was buried up to the windows! I was able to get Weston to help me dig out my vehicle and we started early the next morning. While we were both shoveling for a few minutes, one of the ground crew workers came over to lend a hand and started to dig out with us. Between the three of us we were done in about 20 minutes. Guess who the third guy was? None other than Mike Peckenpaugh!!! After he was done digging out my car with us he jumped on to a Cat and plowed the parking lot behind me so I could easily pull out.
I want to give a big shout out to Mike, Weston and the entire staff at the Mammoth Mountain Inn!!!! We can't wait to...
