The Staybridge Suites is one of the newer hotels in Marquette, having opened around 8 years ago.||||In a city with lower end to mid-level hotels, it's probably the best option. The location is by the regional hospital (so there is a lot of hospital-related business, especially weeknights) and within walking distance of downtown. It's also a short drive from the big-box stores on the outskirts of Marquette.||||Unfortunately, the hotel is starting to show its age.||||In the bathroom, there was mold or mildew in the shower-bathtub. It also needed new caulking. There was also hair in the bathtub.||||Some of the furniture was a little scuffed here and there. ||||The TV was a little smaller than you expect. Most comparable hotels have a 50 or 55 inch TV these days. No smart TV capabilities.||||The kitchen was mostly stocked, though some things seemed short as if guests had swiped items over the years. For example, three wine glasses, four Collins or highball glasses, and two rocks glasses. Two forks but three knifes. You get the idea. ||||Full housekeeping is only once every 7 days, although they replace trash and towels daily Monday to Friday. But absolutely nothing on weekends. If you check in Thursday for 3 nights, you will only get new towels and your trash emptied on Friday. Nothing Saturday and nothing Sunday. That's unacceptable. This also means rooms are almost certainly dirtier because housekeepers likely don't get extra time during the full clean every 7 days. For entry-level rooms at $200 a night, I expect daily service.||||IHG recognition was basic.||||While I was waiting to check-in a guest arriving the following day was on the telephone asking to be upgraded. Instead of following IHG procedure and telling the guest that upgrades were based on availability at check-in, the front desk clerk upgraded the customer. When it was my time to check-in there was no upgrade available for the duration of my stay because of this improper application of the IHG upgrade policy. That's unacceptable. While I was offered the choice of a market item or points, I didn't get a bottle of water or find a bottle of water in the room. Most hotels give elites a bottle of water on top of points or the market item choice.||||The Staybridge weekday happy hour reception at this property is limited to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. So nothing Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Again, that's poor value. Just like not offering any housekeeping on weekends. It's like the guests who stay Thursday-Sunday are second-class guests. ||||A couple other points:||||1) I appreciated having the local newspaper -- that's nice||||2) Breakfast is weird. Officially it starts at 7:30 am on weekdays. That's a little late. 7 am would be better. Cold items were put out starting around 5:30 am. So, by the time 7:30 am comes and breakfast officially starts, some items on the buffet have been left out at room temperature or lightly chilled for 2 hours. Not only does that not make sense, but I'm not sure I want to eat yogurt that's been left out open-air for 2 hours. Or drink coffee that's 2 hours old. ||||All things considered, Marquette just doesn't have any really good hotels. The Staybridge Suites is better than some of the other options in town, especially its location, but the overall value isn't there and after 8 years the property is starting to show its age. And at $200+ per night in the summer, it's a really poor value. In most markets, this hotel would be priced at $90-$150 per night. I hope a renovation will add a full bar, which would be a great option. At least some decent wine and decent beer if you can't get a...
Read moreSet on a main street that is about 15 minutes walk to downtown Marquette. Also right next to the UP Health System hospital. Some parking on the ground floor and additional parking in the basement. Spent a week here and could always manage to find parking on the ground floor so never used the Parking garage. Room was on the 3rd floor. It is a bit of a stretch to call it a 'suite' as I have stayed in regular rooms at other hotels that are about the same size or bigger than the suite at this hotel. Room does have an adequate kitchen. A stove with 2 burners, a full size fridge, a full dishwasher and enough pots and pans, dishes for a couple. Yes, a proper Microwave as well. One of the first things we did was make a trip out to the local Meijer grocery store and stocked up. Breakfast is served and there is something hot each day. Either scrambled eggs, omlette or French toast, plus bacon and/or Cinnamon raisin toast etc. Plus there are other items like Muffins, Fruit, Yogurt etc. Orange juice, Coffee, milk etc. Breakfast was quite adequate and Rachel (I think that is her name) did an outstanding job on most days we were there. She even remembered our names each day as we would come up to order. I mean.... who does that? Has a decent Fitness center that I used several times. I managed to go at times when there was no one or just 1 person in it. A decent amount of treadmills, elliptical machines, plus dumbells and other nautilus equipment. They had disinfectant spray to clean the equipment as well. A well equipped laundry with machines that are of different sizes and capacity. Free to use if you thought to bring your own detergent. WiFi worked fine throughout my entire stay. No complaints. Front desk staff are always polite and courteous, willing to take care of guests. They have a nice outdoor patio area. There are 3 gas grills there. If you bring your own meat, you can grill out there and have a nice meal with friends in the abundant outdoor seating they have. We had a couple of issues during our stay. Had asked for a bathtub that was not draining well to be fixed, plus we had run out of conditioner in the room. We brought this to the attention of the staff late in the evening, knowing that it will be addressed some time the next day. We did not have to remind. 2 different people came to take care of these matters. I am a premium member at Holiday Inn, Marriott and Hilton chain of hotels. I stay in hotels perhaps 4 months out of each year. I can honestly say that the 'Staybridge Suites' in Marquette is head and shoulders above the vast majority of hotels I have stayed in. The attention to detail and the pride with which the property is run is clearly superior. The place is maintained immaculately. The only drawback is, they dont have a Lake Superior view. If you have a chance to stay at this place, dont think twice. It is more...
