When we called Dave the owner asking for availability we hoped for relaxing stay on our first night in Paia. We were successfully checked in by a host named Rodney who was very friendly, and asked if we need any help to carry our daughters stroller in to our room and complimented how beautiful our daughter is. The property was beautiful and the room (small studio) was nice, clean & tastefully decorated. Hour later we got a phonecall from Dave to tell us someone is complaining about our infant being here. Then we JUST learned place doesnt allow kids- there was none of it mentioned on google maps where Im usually browsing for rentals, none was mentioned to us during call OR by a host - who was very friendly interacting with our baby which made us feel comfortable… The girl living or squatting next door with very dirty unwashed yoga pants (these are not individual cabins but more like a few rooms for rent inside his house ) saw me with my daughter and called to complain before she has made even any sound. We felt highly uncomfortable till the end of a stay, feeling unwelcome to use amenities included in the price or unwind knowing there is a squatter next to us walking around property in odd hours, peeping in our windows & being mean towards sweet kitty Taz living on the property who we really loved to hang out with. Room was 450$ and then Dave has completely other side hustle to charge you another 150$ for a cleaning fee so he can pawn off his delegated financial cleaning responsibilities onto the guests. No other hotel in Maui makes the guests pay for maids services. We were luckily waived ridiculous cleaning fee during our initial call with Dave but whole experience remains sour as he didnt offer us any solution for the miscommunication about his no child policy even though he told us he will txt back about the compensation (he never did). Disappointed & unwelcome thats how this experience made us feel… Not recommend for price, level of “hospitality” then additional “cleaning fees”
Today after posting the review husband received phonecall from the owner who was unhappy for my honest feedback. the mentioned lady was present next to him, took this mobile phone to histerically yell at my husband and closed the conversation calling us in a most disrespectful way. Heres to even more hospitality and no class...
Read moreThis lodging is a very relaxing place to stay at. The place is well designed -- great care was given to aesthetics. We stayed in the Treehouse which was just lovely. Outside, there are hammocks and a hot tub. There are also beach supplies for use. The place is about a 10 minute walk outside of town, which was a nice distance for us.
The reason for the 3/5 star rating is that there was no one there to check us in when we arrived in the afternoon. We called and called the two numbers on the website but they went to answering machine. We were very stressed -- we had just arrived in Maui for an 8 day vacation and we had no idea what was happening. We checked reviews for Mangolani Inn and saw that this was not the first time that a guest arrived only to find no one was there for the check in.
We actually went to another hotel and we were about to get a room there when Dave finally called. Dave had been on another island in the Pacific and said he was out of wi-fi reach when we called. Dave gave us the passcode and we checked ourselves into the Mangolani Inn. Dave made it up by giving 50% off the first night when I asked for this discount.
Dave's lodging was nice enough that in the end we were glad we stayed there. But for this rocky start, I would have given this 5/5.
I told Dave that he should provide the passcode in advance so that guests can self-check in. I've been to many other places where self-checking in is the norm and the passcode is always emailed/texted in advance.
If you are looking for a place to stay on Maui, I recommend the Mangolani Inn. BUT, you should make the reservation contingent on Dave providing the check in information in advance so that you don't end up having nowhere to go if he's not reachable...
Read moreMy husband and I had been island hopping for almost three weeks this summer, and we ended our journey in Paia, as we wanted to have convenient access to the Maui airport for our return flight home. Dave was able to take our last-minute reservation, and our stay at the Mangolani was one of the highlights of our trip. The accommodations were exceptional- the room and the grounds are full of personality and character.
We loved being an easy walk to a multitude of cafes, shops and the beaches. We rented bikes in town and snorkeled at the nearby Kaulahao Beach, famous for its turtle sanctuary. The renown "Mama's Fish House" is only a 15 minute Uber away- do check it out if you can get a reservation.
The resident pets were friendly and gave a feeling of "home". No need to buy bottled water! Mangolani uses some kind of filtering system that made it the best water from the tap I've ever had. There was easy access to a washing machine and dryer on the property. And even though the property was undergoing renovations while we were there, there was no noise or disruption during our peaceful and serene stay. Dave was very helpful in making recommendations for local activities and attractions.
I would highly recommend Mangolani to anyone who wants a personalized B&B-type experience in the artsy, eclectic Paia community. During our stay in Hawaii, we enjoyed the hotels, the resorts, and an AirBnb, but Mangolani was certainly at the top of our lodging experiences. We are looking forward to returning for a...
